Liberty of the Seas leaves Galveston at 4:00 PM on Thursday 14 January 2027 for four nights, fresh from a 2026 “amplification” (cruise-speak for a glow-up) that added a Starbucks, a hibachi restaurant and a reworked pool deck to a ship built in 2007. Reseller listings show one port (Cozumel) and two sea days. She gets you home Monday 18 January, which is also MLK Day, so book that flight home like someone who has heard of Galveston fog.
Start Here
- Today (87 days out): open the Cruise Planner and see what you can pre-book: drink packages, specialty dining, excursions. Window-shopping is free, so go wild.
- 30 Nov 2026: app check-in reportedly opens, 45 days out. That date is our arithmetic from a third-party report, so confirm it in the Royal Caribbean app.
- Mon 11 Jan 2027: finish check-in at least 3 days before sailing and claim your arrival slot.
- Before you book any Cozumel excursion: confirm the port call on your booking page, because our database has no port list for this sailing.
- Before you pack: sort your ID (birth certificate and photo ID at minimum, passport ideally) and check it against the documents section below.

We haven’t confirmed an all-aboard time for this sailing, so look for it in the Royal Caribbean app and treat it as sacred. Don’t cut it fine. The ship will not be moved by your “just one more souvenir” energy.
What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite
The hard deadline is being checked in and onboard 90 minutes before port operations close, and Galveston’s exact closing time isn’t something we could confirm. Your boarding pass in the Royal Caribbean app is the authority. Miss the cutoff and you don’t sail, which is a very expensive way to see Galveston.
| When | What | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Now | Browse the Cruise Planner; pre-purchase is generally cheaper than onboard for drinks | Third-party reports |
| 30 Nov 2026 | Check-in reportedly opens (45 days out) | Third-party; confirm in app |
| Mon 11 Jan 2027 | Finish check-in (at least 3 days before sailing) | Royal Caribbean FAQ |
| Tue 12 Jan 2027 | Outer limit for online specialty-restaurant booking (FAQ cites 2 days before the cruise) | Royal Caribbean FAQ |
| Sailing day | Not checked in? Finish at the pier at least 2 hours before sailing time | Royal Caribbean FAQ |
One third-party site claims popular specialty restaurants sell out weeks ahead, which doesn’t square with the FAQ’s “2 days” wording. We couldn’t reconcile the two, so look in the Cruise Planner as early as it lets you. Earlier check-in also reportedly gets you a wider choice of arrival slots, though that comes from third-party sources.
We found no source saying a higher Crown & Anchor tier opens check-in earlier, so don’t count on a loyalty shortcut. Spa appointments “tend to fill up quickly,” says Royal Caribbean, so book those early too. Relaxation, it turns out, is competitive.
Embarkation Logistics
Show up in the arrival slot on your mobile boarding pass, because arriving early will not get you aboard sooner. Eagerness is not a boarding strategy. Arrive late and you may wait for a later group. Embarkation reportedly takes 30 to 90 minutes from arrival to stepping aboard, but that figure is anecdotal.
Terminal
Terminal 10 is probably your terminal, but confirm it in your boarding documents. The Port of Galveston calls Terminal 10 the “Royal Caribbean International Terminal.” The listed address is 1152 Royal Caribbean Way (formerly 1028 Harborside Dr.), Galveston, TX 77550. Some apps, such as Lyft, may not recognise the new address, so have the old one handy. Apps do love a plot twist.
Parking
We found no official 4-night parking price, so prepay online and confirm the total at booking. The Port of Galveston says prepaying is generally cheaper than the gate, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before sailing. Discounts are applied online, not at the gate. Parking questions go to [email protected] or (409) 766-6163.
The nearest benchmarks are 2026 figures for 5-day and 7-day stays, taxes and fees included, per vehicle. Our sailing is four nights, so think of these as the neighbours’ prices, not yours:
| Lot | 5-day | 7-day |
|---|---|---|
| Port Terminal 10 lots | $145 to $162 | $179 to $225 |
| Port Economy Lots A-B (shuttle) | $129 | $179 |
| Park 2 Cruise (outdoor; walkable to Terminals 10 and 16) | $106 | $151 |
| Affordable Cruise Parking (outdoor; shuttle, about 5 miles) | $105 | $140 |
Rates can change. Cruzely reports that Galveston Park N Cruise and Galveston VIP Cruise Parking do not serve Royal Caribbean, so skip them.
Night-before hotels
A hotel with a port shuttle or parking deal can beat a hotel plus a rideshare. These details come from mixed-date sources, so verify prices and shuttle times with each hotel. January is off-season, so rates may be lower, but we have no data on that. Hope is not a pricing strategy, so check.
| Hotel | Reported deal |
|---|---|
| Best Western Plus Seawall Inn & Suites, 102 Seawall Blvd | Very close to the Royal Caribbean terminal; free parking for guests staying a night |
| Holiday Inn Resort Galveston, 5002 Seawall Blvd | “Park, Stay & Go” package with parking and round-trip port shuttle |
| Hilton Galveston Island Resort, 5400 Seawall Blvd | Port shuttle $20 per person |
| Comfort Suites Galveston, 3606 89th St. | Shuttle $25 round trip per person; free parking if you use it |
Airport transfers
Hobby (HOU) is the easier airport, about 42 miles and a 50 to 55 minute drive. Bush (IAH) is about 70 miles and roughly 80 minutes. These are undated estimates, not official 2026 fares:
| Option | From Hobby | From IAH |
|---|---|---|
| Private car, up to 4 people, each way | about $60 | about $120 |
| Galveston Express shared shuttle, round trip, per person | $70 | $70 |
| Uber, per ride | about $60 | about $80 |
| Taxi, per ride | about $110 | about $185 |
Watch the units here: the private car is per vehicle, the shuttle is per person. A family of four from Hobby pays about $120 round trip in the private car (2 x $60) versus $280 on the shuttle (4 x $70), so the “cheap” shared option stops being cheap fast. And the $185 taxi from IAH is a bold choice.
The Ship and How to Work It
Liberty is a 2007 ship that got a 2026 facelift, so expect a mix of new venues and long-standing favourites. Think fresh highlights, same bone structure. Her sanitation score is 97 out of 100 from the 12 Dec 2025 inspection; you can look up CDC inspection results yourself. More on her is on our Liberty of the Seas ship page.
What’s new after the refit
- Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, replacing Sabor on Deck 4 (extra cost).
- El Loco Fresh (free).
- The ship’s first Starbucks, on Deck 4 (paid, naturally).
- A reimagined pool deck with Lime & Coconut bar(s); sources disagree on whether it’s one bar or two.
- Private pool-deck casitas at an extra charge. We have no price.
- An escape room replacing the Connoisseur Club on Deck 5. The name varies by source, so don’t hunt for a specific one.
- An expanded casino.
One guide also reports more than 35 added cabins, the removal of the free steam rooms and saunas, and the On Air karaoke lounge being gone. It also says there is no Playmakers sports bar aboard. That is a single source, so treat it as reported, not gospel. Don’t expect newer-class features such as the Ultimate Family Suite; we found nothing listing it on Liberty.
Eating
Six venues are free, which is plenty for four nights. Nobody has ever starved on a cruise ship. Royal Caribbean names the Main Dining Room, Windjammer, Sorrento’s (pizza), Sprinkles, Café Promenade and El Loco Fresh as complimentary. The ship page counts “13+ dining options and 10+ bars” but doesn’t list the rest.
Chops Grille and Johnny Rockets appear in older listings. We couldn’t confirm they survived the refit, so check before building a dinner plan around them. Also unconfirmed: whether the main dining room uses set seating or “My Time” dining. The Cruise Planner or your booking documents will say.
Playing
Liberty has 4 pools, 3 waterslides, a FlowRider, a rock climbing wall, an ice rink, a sports court, mini golf and a casino. Yes, an ice rink, on a ship heading to Mexico. The slides are Tidal Wave, a boomerang slide and The Perfect Storm. Per one guide, pools, slides, FlowRider and the fitness centre are included in the fare.
The entertainment lineup includes a Saturday Night Fever stage production, a headliner show, the Attic comedy club, Boleros and Casino Royale. We haven’t confirmed the show schedule, so check the daily planner. Splashaway Bay is the kids’ water play area, and Adventure Ocean is reported to be included in the fare, but age groups and hours are unconfirmed. Check Royal Caribbean’s FAQ if you’re travelling with little ones. The same goes for whether the Solarium is adults-only: we couldn’t confirm it.
The Port: Cozumel
Treat Cozumel as likely but unconfirmed until Royal Caribbean’s booking page says so. Reseller listings agree on Galveston, sea day, Cozumel, sea day, Galveston. Royal Caribbean can change ports, and Cozumel is weather-sensitive. See our Liberty of the Seas itineraries for updates.
Where you dock
- Royal Caribbean normally uses the International Pier, south of downtown San Miguel. Puerta Maya, mostly Carnival, sits next to it.
- You can’t walk between the southern piers without leaving the port area.
- Pier assignments can change; one guide says they’re confirmed the evening before, so check the day before.
- Right at the pier exit you’ll find shops, bars and vendors. Downtown is a taxi ride, not a stroll, and we found no walking distance to quote.
Getting around
Taxi fares are fixed and posted at the port exits, and the rate is per ride, not per person. Photograph the board; future-you will thank present-you. One 2026 guide lists, from Puerta Maya, town at MX$200, Chankanaab at MX$250 and Punta Sur at MX$400, while other blogs quote about $12 to $15 for Chankanaab. That’s a conflict, so go by the posted card. A blog estimate for Palancar is about $30 to $40 round trip with the driver waiting.
The same blog suggests tipping 10 to 15% and carrying $1 bills, since drivers often claim no change. (Funny how that works.) A ship excursion’s practical perk is a ride back to the right pier. We found no current Royal Caribbean excursion names or prices, so pull them from the booking page.
Royal Beach Club and safety
Don’t plan your day around Royal Beach Club Cozumel yet. Third-party sources cite a 31 Dec 2026 target opening, but Royal’s own page gives no date, only “More details to come” and a waitlist. One March 2026 report put a day pass at $310 per person; that is a single report, not an official price.
The U.S. State Department rates Mexico overall Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, and Quintana Roo, home to Cozumel, is flagged for crime. It advises sticking to well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones. Re-check travel.state.gov closer to sailing, because advisories change.
Conditions and Packing for Mid-January
This is a cool-weather Gulf departure with a warm Cozumel day in the middle, so pack layers. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and this sailing falls outside it. The winter risks are cold fronts and fog, which are less dramatic than a hurricane but just as happy to ruin a schedule.
| Place | January figures |
|---|---|
| Galveston (NWS 1991 to 2020 normals) | High 63.2°F, low 48.9°F, 4.30 inches of precipitation |
| Cozumel air (approximate; sources disagree) | Highs about 77 to 84°F, lows about 68 to 72°F |
| Cozumel sea temperature (approximate) | About 78°F |
We couldn’t pin down reliable Cozumel January rainfall, so we’re not quoting any. No forecast for January 2027 exists yet either, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Sea state
Usually fine, but a front can make the Gulf legs lumpy. Climatology puts the chance of waves of 8 ft or more at about 10 to 15% over the Gulf, with gale risk about 3% over the western Gulf. Strong northerlies behind a front can briefly top 30 knots, and that’s the water Liberty crosses leaving Galveston. A ship of 154,407 tons damps most of it, and motion-sickness remedies are a cheap precaution (our suggestion, not medical advice).
Fog
Fog is the real Galveston winter wildcard. Cruise Critic calls Galveston the most infamous cruise port for fog delays. Pilots must board each ship, and if they judge it unsafe, the channel can close. On a four-night cruise, a delay can eat a big share of your Cozumel time or the whole call.
You return on Monday 18 January, MLK Day, so book your flight home later in the day, not first thing. We found no 2026 fog incident reports, but a cushion costs nothing, and a missed flight costs plenty.
What to pack
- Light jacket or fleece and long pants for embarkation and sailaway.
- A windbreaker for deck time.
- Shorts, swimwear and sunscreen for Cozumel.
- Motion-sickness remedies, just in case.
Money
The fare isn’t the full price: gratuities alone add $74.00 per person for four nights in a standard room. Surprise! Everything below is per person unless noted. Drink, Wi-Fi and dining figures are third-party estimates, not official price sheets.
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Daily gratuity, standard rooms | $18.50 per person per day | 4 x $18.50 = $74.00; a couple pays $148.00 |
| Daily gratuity, suites | $21.00 per person per day | 4 x $21.00 = $84.00; a couple pays $168.00 |
| Gratuity, family of four, standard room | 4 x $74.00 = $296.00 | No child exemption reported |
| Gratuity on drinks, specialty dining, spa | 18% | Some sources say 20%; check at booking |
| Mexico passenger fee | $10 per person (reported) | Cruise lines collect it; check your fare breakdown |
| Deluxe Beverage Package | $55 to $120 per person per day, plus 18% | Varies by ship and date |
| Refreshment / Classic Soda | $29 to $42 / $13 to $18 per day | Third-party estimates |
| Wi-Fi (Surf + Stream) | About $28.99 per device per day | Liberty/Jan 2027 price not established |
| Specialty dinner | $45 to $70 per person, plus 18% | Lunch usually about 35% cheaper |
The daily gratuity assumes it applies to each of the 4 nights; confirm how Royal Caribbean bills it. Gratuities are adjustable at Guest Relations until the morning you disembark, and you can prepay through Manage Reservation. We found no verified prepay discount. Our cruise tipping guide covers who gets what.
A drink package is hard to justify on four nights unless you drink heavily. Illustration with an assumed $84 per day: $84 x 1.18 = $99.12, or about $396 per person over 4 days. That is a lot of money to spend on a four-day relationship with a cocktail menu. Compare it with what you’d actually drink, and use the allowed wine and soda allowance below.
Value picks from our read: the free venues, one bottle of wine per adult, and, if Chops is aboard, a lunch at roughly $25 per person (unconfirmed for this ship). Third-party 2026 estimates put Izumi hibachi at about $40 pre-cruise or $70 onboard, but Liberty’s own price isn’t established, so check the Cruise Planner before you fall in love with the onion volcano.
Documents and What You Can Bring
A passport is strongly recommended even though this closed-loop sailing doesn’t strictly require one for US citizens. If you miss the ship or need to leave early for an emergency, you’ll need a passport to fly home from a foreign port. Royal Caribbean’s own travel-documents page is the authority, so check it.
- US adults (generally): government photo ID plus a certified birth certificate from a state Vital Records office. Hospital-issued certificates are not accepted, however cute the footprints.
- Under 16: certified birth certificate, no photo ID. Photo ID applies from 16.
- Name doesn’t match your birth certificate: bring proof of the change, such as a marriage certificate. We found no confirmed Royal Caribbean rule.
- Non-US citizens: a passport is typically required, plus a visa where applicable; green card holders should carry their card. Check Royal Caribbean’s Travel Documents Hub.
- Minors without both parents: consent-letter rules weren’t established, so ask the line.
Packing rules
Royal Caribbean allows one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per guest of drinking age on embarkation day. Boxed wine is out, and extra bottles are held by the ship and returned on your last day. Beer, seltzer and liquor seized at embarkation come back at the end of the voyage if unopened and in original packaging. The corkage fee amount is a gap. More in our bring alcohol on a cruise guide.
- Non-alcoholic drinks: up to 12 standard (17 oz) cans, bottles or cartons per stateroom, not per person.
- Banned: illegal drugs including marijuana (even with medical authorization), weapons and replicas, fireworks, mace and pepper spray, clothing irons and steamers, extension cords, power strips, baby monitors and HAM radios.
- Tools over 7 inches are prohibited; small grooming items with blades under 4 inches are fine.
- Curling and flat irons are allowed, and a hair dryer is provided in the stateroom.
- Vapes and e-cigarettes may not be taken ashore in Mexico.
The prohibited-items page doesn’t address prescription or over-the-counter medication, so check with the line before you fly.
FAQ: Your Last-Minute Questions
What ports does Liberty of the Seas visit on the 14 January 2027 cruise?
Reseller listings show Galveston, a sea day, Cozumel on Saturday 16 January, another sea day, then Galveston on Monday 18 January. Royal Caribbean’s own page for this exact date wasn’t confirmed, and our database has no port list. Verify on your booking page before buying excursions, since ports can change.
Do I need a passport for a 4-night cruise from Galveston?
Generally not for US citizens on a closed-loop sailing. A government photo ID plus a certified birth certificate usually works, and children under 16 need only the certificate. But a passport is strongly recommended, because you’ll need one to fly home if you miss the ship or leave early. Confirm with Royal Caribbean’s travel-documents page.
What time should I arrive at the Galveston cruise terminal?
Arrive in the slot shown on your mobile boarding pass. Arriving early won’t let you board sooner, and arriving late may mean waiting for a later group. You must be checked in and onboard at least 90 minutes before port operations close. Galveston’s closing time wasn’t stated, so rely on the app.
Can I bring wine on Royal Caribbean?
Yes, one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per guest of drinking age, on embarkation day only. Boxed wine isn’t allowed. Extra bottles and any bought onboard or in port are held and returned on your last day. Beer, seltzer and liquor are held too. The corkage fee isn’t confirmed.
How much are gratuities on a 4-night Royal Caribbean cruise?
Current reports put the automatic charge at $18.50 per person per day in standard rooms and $21.00 in suites, so $74.00 or $84.00 per person over four nights, assuming it applies to each night. Children are charged too. You can adjust the amount at Guest Relations until the morning you disembark.
Will fog delay my Galveston cruise?
It can. Galveston is notorious for winter fog, and if pilots judge conditions unsafe, the channel can close. Past incidents have delayed ships and shortened itineraries. We found no 2026 incident reports. Because you return on MLK Day, Monday 18 January, book a later flight home to leave yourself a cushion.
Is a drink package worth it on a 4-night cruise?
Probably not for most people. Third-party estimates put the Deluxe package at $55 to $120 per person per day plus 18% gratuity. At an assumed $84 a day, that’s about $396 over four days. Add the wine and soda you can bring, and a light drinker will likely come out ahead paying per drink.
The Bottom Line
This is a short, simple Galveston round trip with one probable port, two sea days and a ship wearing a fresh 2026 refit. The big wins are boring ones: check in on time, prepay what you’ll actually use, and bring your one bottle of wine. Confirm Cozumel, your terminal and your arrival slot in the app, and keep a fog cushion on your Monday flight. Do that and the rest is just cocktails with a view of the Gulf.
