Liberty of the Seas leaves Galveston on Saturday 9 January 2027 for five nights and a Thursday 14 January return, fresh out of her 2026 “Royal Amplified” refit. That makes her a 2007 ship with a reimagined pool deck and a few new restaurants, which is basically a glow-up with the same good bones. On third-party listings this sailing is a Mexico double-feature: Costa Maya at midday, Cozumel the next morning, and a Gulf sea day on each end. Here’s everything you need, in the order you’ll need it.
Start Here
- Now: make sure every traveller’s booking name matches their ID or passport exactly, because a mismatch can mean being denied boarding with no refund.
- Now: book Galveston parking or an airport transfer, plus a hotel for Friday 8 January (details below).
- Wed 25 Nov 2026: online check-in reportedly opens (45 days out, at midnight Galveston time), so grab your arrival slot early.
- Around Sat 28 Nov: popular shore excursions reportedly start selling out about six weeks before sailing.
- Wed 6 Jan 2027: the latest to finish app check-in (Royal Caribbean says at least 3 days before sailing), but do it far sooner.

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite
Three dates matter: check-in opening on 25 November, the excursion sell-out window in late November, and your check-in cutoff on 6 January. Everything else is comfortable if you hit those.
| Date | What | How firm |
|---|---|---|
| Wed 25 Nov 2026 | Online check-in reportedly opens, 45 days out | Blog-reported; your app shows the exact date |
| About Sat 28 Nov | Popular excursions start selling out | Blog-reported, roughly 6 weeks out |
| Wed 6 Jan 2027 | Finish app check-in (at least 3 days before sailing) | Royal Caribbean FAQ |
| Fri 8 Jan, 9:00 AM | Cancel Port of Galveston parking by now for a $10 fee | Port of Galveston |
| Sat 9 Jan | Not checked in? Be at the pier at least 2 hours before the published sailing time | Royal Caribbean FAQ |
You choose an arrival time slot in the Royal Caribbean app during check-in, and it appears on your mobile boarding pass. Show up early and you can’t start boarding. Show up late and you may wait for a later group. Think of it as a concert time slot, only with more sunscreen.
Blogs say slots come in half-hour blocks, usually 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM, first come, first served. That comes from blogs, not Royal Caribbean, so treat it as a rough picture. Blogs also disagree on when online check-in closes, which is why the sensible move is to finish days ahead.
One rule is non-negotiable: everyone must be checked in and on board 90 minutes before port operations close. The 4:00 PM listed sailing time is when the ship leaves, not your deadline. The all-aboard time for this sailing isn’t confirmed, so check the Royal Caribbean app or your cruise documents for it.
Embarkation Logistics: Galveston Terminal 10
Royal Caribbean uses Terminal 10; do not follow the Carnival-side signs to Terminals 25 and 28. A third-party guide gives the address as 1402 Harborside Drive, Galveston, TX 77550. Luggage drop-off is outside the terminal and signposted. Keep your boarding pass and photo ID on you, because everyone goes through security.
Parking (5 nights, per vehicle)
Port lots cost $145 to $162 per vehicle; off-site lots start at $91. These are third-party figures (Cruzely, October 2026), so confirm at booking.
| Lot | 5-night price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Port of Galveston lots near Terminal 10 | $145 to $162, depending on lot | North, South, Pier lots, Terminal 16 Garage |
| Lighthouse | $91 uncovered, $111 covered | Shuttle |
| Affordable Cruise Parking | $105 uncovered, $125 covered | Shuttle |
| Park 2 Cruise | $106 | No shuttle, about a block from Terminal 10 |
| Discount Cruise Parking | $114 | Free shuttle |
| Port Parking | $141 outdoor, $163 indoor | Off-site |
Lighthouse uncovered undercuts the port lots by $54 to $71. Cruzely says Galveston Park N Cruise and Galveston VIP Cruise Parking aren’t available for Royal Caribbean. The Port takes credit cards only, no cash, and no-shows may not get a refund. Parking help is (409) 766-6163, 8 AM to 5 PM daily.
Airport transfers (round trip)
A prebooked limo is the cheapest option for solo travellers and pairs from either airport; rideshare only wins on price once the group gets bigger. Hobby (HOU) is about 40 miles away, roughly 45 minutes, so allow at least an hour. Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is about 70 miles and 1.5 hours, so allow at least 2 hours. Prices below are from Cruzely, dated 7 September 2026.
| Option | Priced | Hobby | IAH |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber/Lyft | Per car, up to 4 people | About $120 | About $200 |
| Galveston Express shared shuttle | Per person | $80 | $80 |
| Galveston Limousine, booked online ahead | Per person | $56 | $56 |
| Taxi | Per car | About $220 | About $360 |
Run the numbers for two people: the limo is $112 (2 × $56) from either airport, the shuttle is $160 (2 × $80), and a rideshare is about $120 from Hobby or about $200 from IAH. So from IAH, a pair is better off on the shuttle than in a rideshare. Rideshare overtakes the limo at three people from Hobby ($120 against $168) and at four from IAH ($200 against $224). Four people from Hobby pay about $120 in a rideshare, against $320 on the shuttle (4 × $80) or $224 by limo (4 × $56). The shuttle’s $80 climbs to $85 at peak Sunday times.
The night before
Fly in Friday and stay overnight; a Saturday 4:00 PM sailing is no place for a same-day flight gamble. These are aggregator snapshots from 2026, not rates for 8 January, and taxes add roughly 10% to 15%. Check live rates for your date before you book.
- Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21: about $108 to $118, walkable to restaurants.
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Galveston Beach: about $83 to $91.
- The Tremont House: about $162.
- Grand Galvez Resort: about $206.
Ask any hotel about parking-and-transport packages directly, since those details aren’t confirmed.
The Ship and How to Work It
Liberty is a 2007 Freedom Class ship with 2026 upgrades, so expect a polished classic rather than a new-build playground. The refit ran about five weeks in a French shipyard, and she returned to service on 29 May 2026. For the full profile, see our Liberty of the Seas page.
Food
- Listed on the ship page: Main Dining Room, Windjammer buffet, Sorrento’s pizza, Sprinkles ice cream and Café Promenade.
- New and complimentary: El Loco Fresh, a Mexican grab-and-go with breakfast burritos and quesadillas.
- New and expected to cost extra: Izumi on Deck 4 (replacing Sabor), with sushi-bar seating and teppanyaki tables.
- Replaced: Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen takes over from Giovanni’s Table. Pricing is unverified.
- Don’t plan around it: a Starbucks was reported as “scheduled to be added,” but the ship page doesn’t confirm it.
Whether main dining is set-time or My Time, and what specialty meals cost on Liberty, isn’t confirmed, so check the Cruise Planner. Blogs say hibachi-style seats are the usual specialty sellout, sometimes gone by embarkation day, so book Izumi early if it matters to you.
Pools, play and nights out
The reimagined pool deck is the headline. The ship page lists four pools including private casitas, hot tubs and a solarium, plus Splashaway Bay for small kids. There are three waterslides (including Tidal Wave and the Perfect Storm slides), the FlowRider surf simulator and a rock climbing wall. Lime & Coconut is reported as a new pool bar. Which of these are new isn’t confirmed, and neither is whether the solarium is still adults-only.
Evenings offer a Broadway-style production, an ice show (Ice Odyssey), Attic Comedy Club, Music Hall, Spotlight Karaoke and Casino Royale. Show titles for winter 2027 aren’t confirmed. The new Royal Escape Room costs extra and needs a reservation.
Parents of little ones: part of the Deck 12 Adventure Ocean space was converted into family-type suites. Age bands and hours aren’t confirmed, so check them before you pitch the kids club as a babysitting plan.
Cleanliness
The ship’s latest CDC score in our database is 97 out of 100, from 12 December 2025. Scores of 86 or higher count as satisfactory. That inspection predates the refit, so look up the newest result in our CDC inspection lookup.
The Ports
Per third-party listings, you get Costa Maya on Monday and Cozumel on Tuesday; Royal Caribbean hasn’t been confirmed as the source. Our own database holds no port list for this sailing. The 4 January sailing reportedly runs the ports in reverse, and one listing shows Cozumel starting at 9:00 AM rather than 7:00 AM. Check your booking page or the app before you commit to excursions.
| Day | Date | Port | Listed times |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sat 9 Jan | Galveston | Departs 4:00 PM |
| 2 | Sun 10 Jan | At sea | n/a |
| 3 | Mon 11 Jan | Costa Maya, Mexico | About 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM |
| 4 | Tue 12 Jan | Cozumel, Mexico | About 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM |
| 5 | Wed 13 Jan | At sea | n/a |
| 6 | Thu 14 Jan | Galveston | Arrives about 7:00 AM |
These are the ship’s arrival and departure times, not all-aboard times, so check the Royal Caribbean app or your cruise documents for those. Costa Maya times have shifted between sources, so treat them as soft until Royal Caribbean publishes the final schedule.
Costa Maya
It’s a seven-hour call on paper, and the real window is shorter, so keep plans simple. The port complex has pools, swim-up bars, shops, casual dining and a dolphin centre (spots are limited, so book ahead). The beaches and Mahahual village are not walkable, and you’ll need a taxi, shuttle, golf cart or tour. Mahahual is roughly 5 to 10 minutes by road, depending on the source.
- Chacchoben Maya ruins: dated to about AD 700, 43 miles (69 km) from the port, roughly an hour’s drive. A ship excursion makes sense, because independent timing at a midday arrival is tight (our judgement, not a sourced rule).
- Bacalar lagoon: about 1.5 hours each way, a poor fit for this call.
- Snorkelling: go on a trip from Mahahual or the port. One blogger warns you may be detained for snorkelling near the pier, which is a very dramatic way to miss the ship.
Royal Caribbean is converting the Costa Maya port into Perfect Day Mexico, with opening projected for September 2027 or late 2027 depending on the report. A Mexican court temporarily halted construction, and work has reportedly resumed. The port stays open to all cruise lines, and no specific January 2027 disruption is confirmed.
Cozumel
Your pier decides everything, and it isn’t confirmed, so check the app or docking notice. Cozumel has three piers:
- Punta Langosta: walkable straight into San Miguel, with duty-free shops, tequila tastings and waterfront restaurants within about 5 minutes’ stroll.
- International Pier: distance to town is quoted from about a mile to 3 miles, depending on the source. Plan on a taxi.
- Puerta Maya: about 5 miles from San Miguel, with a taxi usually US$6 to $10. It has its own restaurants, jewellery stores, craft carts and a beach.
Taxi fares are usually posted at the piers; settle the fare before getting in. Current excursion pricing isn’t confirmed, so check Cruise Planner for Cozumel options.
Mexico’s passenger fee
Mexico charges cruise passengers US$10 each on departures from 1 August 2026 to 30 June 2027, which covers this sailing. That’s $20 for a couple and $40 for four. Cruise lines may already fold it into your taxes and fees, so check your invoice before assuming you owe it again. Discover Mexico’s June 2026 summary of the US State Department advisory puts Quintana Roo (Cozumel’s state) at Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution.” Read the current wording on travel.state.gov before you go.
Conditions and Packing for January
Pack for two climates: a chilly Gulf on both sea days and a warm, mostly dry Mexico in between. Hurricane season ends 30 November, about six weeks before you sail, so storms aren’t the worry. Cold fronts are.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Galveston January average high / low (1991 to 2020) | 63.2°F / 48.9°F |
| Galveston January precipitation normal | 4.30 in |
| Cold-front air temperature drop | 10 to 15°C (18 to 27°F) within 24 hours |
| Northwestern Gulf sea surface, January | 18 to 22°C (64 to 72°F) |
| Chance of 8 ft+ waves over the Gulf, January | 10 to 15% |
| Typical January winds | 11 to 21 knots |
The wave and wind figures are long-term climatology, not a forecast. Both sea days are in the Gulf, which is where a front would show up. Check NOAA marine forecasts a few days before sailing. Official normals for the Mexican ports aren’t confirmed, so expect warm weather with the odd short shower.
- Galveston and sea days: jeans, a light jacket or fleece, and a windproof layer for the deck.
- Costa Maya and Cozumel: shorts, swimwear, sunscreen and a light rain layer.
- Evenings: something warmer, because deck breezes bite.
Money
The fare is the cheap part; gratuities, drinks and extras are where budgets quietly wander off. Third-party snapshots show these starting fares per person, double occupancy, taxes and fees included, per the iCruise listing:
| Cabin | From, per person |
|---|---|
| Interior | $360 |
| Oceanview | $575 |
| Balcony | $619 |
| Suite | $1,022 |
Another site lists interior from $436 per person before taxes and fees (checked 18 October 2026). Different bases, so don’t compare them directly. These are snapshots, so confirm on royalcaribbean.com.
Gratuities
Gratuities are $18.50 per guest per day in standard cabins and $21.00 in suites, per person and not per cabin. Over five days that’s $92.50 per person ($185.00 for two sharing) or $105.00 per person in a suite. It’s not confirmed whether Royal Caribbean bills five or six days, so check your invoice. Charges post daily, and you can adjust or remove them at Guest Relations until the morning of disembarkation. Our tipping guide covers who gets what.
A couple in an interior at the $360 snapshot would pay $720 in fares plus $185.00 in gratuities, $905 in all. That’s before parking, flights, hotel, drinks and excursions, so the plot thickens fast. An automatic gratuity is also added to drinks, specialty dining and spa. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ lists 20%, while some third-party guides quote 18% for some of those, so check the FAQ when you book.
Drinks and Wi-Fi
The Deluxe Beverage Package only pays off for heavy drinkers. A third-party tracker puts Liberty at $83.99 per person per day before gratuity. Add the automatic gratuity and you’re at about $99.11 per day at 18% (the tracker’s figure) or about $100.79 at 20% (the rate in Royal Caribbean’s FAQ), so budget roughly $100. If one adult in a stateroom buys it, every adult in the stateroom must, and the drinking age is 21 on Caribbean sailings. Check Cruise Planner for the actual price. How many days a 5-night sailing is charged isn’t confirmed.
Liberty-specific Wi-Fi pricing isn’t confirmed; third-party estimates run $20 to $35 per device per day, cheaper if you pre-book. Our bring-alcohol guide has the drinks policy in full: one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per drinking-age guest, and up to 12 standard 17 oz non-alcoholic drinks per stateroom.
Documents and Rules
US citizens can board with a birth certificate plus photo ID, but Royal Caribbean strongly recommends a passport. The reason is simple: if you must fly home from Mexico, the passport is the only document that swiftly helps.
- US citizens, 16 and older: a state-issued birth certificate plus a government photo ID, or a US passport book. Hospital birth certificates aren’t accepted.
- Under 16: proof of citizenship, with no photo ID required. Minors travelling with a non-parent adult may need a notarized letter, which isn’t confirmed for the US site, so check Royal Caribbean’s US minors page.
- Enhanced Driver’s Licence: works alone, but only in MI, MN, NY, VT and WA, and it isn’t the same as a REAL ID.
- Non-US citizens: a passport valid at least 6 months after the cruise ends, plus any required US visa. Permanent residents bring their Permanent Resident Card. Mexican entry rules depend on your nationality, so check yours.
Banned outright: illegal drugs including marijuana, clothing irons and steamers, and extension cords or power strips. A hair dryer is provided in the stateroom. Vapes and e-cigarettes can’t be taken ashore in Mexico. Royal Caribbean’s prohibited-items page doesn’t spell out rules for prescription medication, so confirm the current guidance with Royal Caribbean before you pack yours.
FAQ: Your Last-Minute Questions
What time does Liberty of the Seas leave Galveston on 9 January 2027?
Third-party listings show a 4:00 PM sailing, but that’s the ship’s departure, not your deadline. The all-aboard time isn’t confirmed, so check the Royal Caribbean app or your cruise documents for it. Royal Caribbean requires everyone checked in and on board 90 minutes before port operations close. Choose your arrival slot in the app and don’t cut it fine.
Which ports does the 9 January 2027 Liberty of the Seas cruise visit?
Third-party listings show Costa Maya on Monday 11 January and Cozumel on Tuesday 12 January, with sea days on 10 and 13 January. Royal Caribbean hasn’t been confirmed as the source, and the 4 January sailing reportedly visits in the opposite order. Check your booking page or the app before building excursion plans.
Do I need a passport for a Galveston cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya?
Not strictly, if you’re a US citizen. Royal Caribbean accepts a state-issued birth certificate plus government photo ID (age 16 and up) for US-homeport sailings, or a passport. It strongly recommends a passport, though, because it’s the only document that swiftly gets you home from Mexico. Non-US citizens need a passport valid 6 months past the cruise.
How much does parking cost at the Galveston cruise terminal for 5 nights?
Cruzely’s October 2026 figures put Port of Galveston lots near Terminal 10 at $145 to $162 per vehicle for five nights, depending on the lot. Off-site lots run roughly $91 to $163, with shuttles at most. These are third-party prices, so confirm at booking. The Port’s reservation system shows live rates.
Can I bring alcohol on Liberty of the Seas?
Each drinking-age guest may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day. Other alcohol is confiscated at embarkation and returned at the end if unopened and in original packaging. You can also bring non-alcoholic drinks, up to 12 standard 17 oz cans, bottles or cartons per stateroom.
How much are gratuities on a Royal Caribbean 5-night cruise?
Without prepaying, it’s $18.50 per guest per day in non-suite cabins and $21.00 in suites. Five days comes to $92.50 per person, or $185.00 for two sharing a standard cabin. It’s not confirmed whether five or six days are billed, so check your invoice. Children are charged too.
What is the weather like in Galveston in January for a cruise?
Cool. Galveston’s January normals are a 63.2°F average high and a 48.9°F average low, and a cold front can drop air temperatures 18 to 27°F within 24 hours. Both sea days are in the Gulf, where climatology gives a 10 to 15% chance of waves of 8 feet or more. Hurricane season is over by then.
The Bottom Line
This is a straightforward five-night Mexico run, and the whole job is handling the dates before you sail. Mark 25 November for check-in and late November for excursions. Finish check-in well before 6 January, and treat the Costa Maya–Cozumel order as likely but unconfirmed until Royal Caribbean shows it in your booking. Pack a jacket for the Gulf, swimwear for Mexico, and a budget that remembers $92.50 per person in gratuities isn’t in the fare.
