What Liberty of the Seas's Autumn Caribbean/Bahamas Season Is Actually Like

This isn't a normal season for Liberty of the Seas — it's a season with a plot twist. The ship spends early October finishing up short runs out of Southampton, then on October 16 she turns into a full-blown transatlantic ferry: 15 nights from Southampton to Galveston via Vigo, Lisbon and Funchal (Madeira), with eleven sea days doing the heavy lifting. By Halloween she's reborn as a Texas-based Western Caribbean workhorse, churning out 4- and 5-night runs out of Galveston through mid-December. Same ship, two entirely different holidays.

Worth knowing before you book: Liberty just came out of a 2026 refurbishment, so whichever leg you catch, the carpets haven't had time to get that "seasoned cruise ship" smell yet. She's also a clean operator on paper — her most recent CDC inspection (December 12, 2025) scored 97/100, which you can check against any other ship on our CDC inspection lookup before you sail.

Which length suits whom

The Galveston ports are the reliably-documented part, and they're not the same across both lengths — so don't assume you're getting the same trip just because it's the same ship. The 4-nighters are a one-port affair: two sea days sandwiching a single call at Cozumel. The 5-nighters get the full double-bill, adding Costa Maya alongside Cozumel. Both ports are exactly what you'd expect — reef snorkelling and duty-free tequila in Cozumel, quieter beach-club energy in Costa Maya. Neither is a surprise, and that's the point; they're dependable, cheap-to-do-yourself ports rather than must-book-early ones. If you specifically want two Mexican port days rather than one plus an extra sea day, that's the deciding factor between the two lengths.

Weather, and the word nobody likes to say out loud: hurricanes

Atlantic hurricane season doesn't officially end until November 30, and early October still carries real storm risk in the Gulf and Western Caribbean — 2026's outlook is milder than recent years, but "milder" isn't "none." By November, though, the region flips into its best stretch: settled seas, air in the high 70s to mid-80s, and crowds and fares that haven't caught up to peak-season levels yet. That first three weeks of November is genuinely the sweet spot for the Galveston sailings. December brings holiday crowding back, especially on anything running near Christmas, so expect fuller pools and earlier dinner reservations booking out.

Pack accordingly: reef-safe sunscreen and a light rain jacket for the Galveston loops (afternoon squalls are routine, not alarming), a proper sea-day layer for the transatlantic crossing once you're past Madeira, and — whichever leg you're on — something you don't mind getting a margarita spilled on. Bottom line: this is a season of two personalities — a scenic, slow-paced ocean crossing bookended by quick, sunny, reliable Gulf runs. Book the length that matches the holiday you actually want, not the one that just happens to be cheapest.
