The Tea
San Juan is arguably the most underrated cruise port in the Caribbean. It's a US territory (no passport needed), the Old San Juan historic district is right there at the port, and the walkability is off the charts. You step off the ship and you're immediately in a 500-year-old city with colorful colonial architecture, excellent restaurants, and actual culture.
As both a homeport and port of call, San Juan punches above its weight. El Morro fortress is a 15-minute walk from the pier, the craft cocktail scene rivals any US city, and the food — mofongo, lechon, alcapurrias — is genuinely incredible and reasonably priced.
The safety situation is nuanced: tourist areas in Old San Juan are well-patrolled and safe, but venture outside the historic district and you'll find neighborhoods that require more awareness. The cruise lines won't tell you that San Juan is one of the few Caribbean ports where the port experience is better than the ship day — so get off the boat.
