How We Rank the Cleanest Cruise Ships
This list ranks every cruise ship in our database by its most recent CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection score. Higher is better — 100 is a perfect inspection, 86 is the passing threshold, and anything below 86 fails. The CDC inspects ships unannounced, so the score reflects whatever the inspector found that day, not what the cruise line wishes had been findable.
We pull the data directly from the CDC’s public inspection database and refresh it after every new inspection. To see the full inspection history for any ship on this list, click its name — or search any ship by name.
A few caveats worth knowing before you book based on this ranking:
- One score is a snapshot, not a trend. A ship with a single 100 isn’t necessarily cleaner than one with a steady 96 across ten inspections. Look at the violation history, not just the headline.
- Critical violations matter more than total count. Two minor paperwork issues are not the same as one critical food-temperature violation. The CDC weights them differently and so should you.
- Inspection scores don’t track outbreaks. A ship can score 99 and still have an active norovirus outbreak the next week. For illness data, see our outbreak tracker.
Which Cruise Lines Have the Cleanest Ships?
Based on average latest scores across the fleet, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line have historically ranked highest for sanitation. Disney in particular runs a tight operation — their fleet rarely scores below 95 and frequently hits 100. Royal Caribbean’s newer ships (Icon, Wonder, Symphony) tend to outscore older hulls in the same line.
That doesn’t mean every ship in those fleets is spotless. Even Disney has had inspections drop below 95 when a single galley issue compounded across a follow-up visit. Our cruise line dossiers break down the fleet-wide average for every major line, alongside controversies, hidden costs, and crew treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “cleanest cruise ship” actually mean?
For this ranking, it means the ship with the highest score on its most recent CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection. Scores run 0–100; 86 is passing. The score covers food safety, water sanitation, hygiene practices, pool/spa operations, and overall ship cleanliness.
How current is this ranking?
We refresh the underlying inspection data weekly. The score on this page is whatever was published last by the CDC for that ship. Inspections happen unannounced 1–2 times per year for most ships, so a ship’s rank can shift dramatically after a single new inspection.
Are higher-scored ships actually cleaner in everyday cabin terms?
Mostly yes, but the inspection focuses on health-relevant areas (galley, water, common-area hygiene). Cabin-level cleanliness depends more on the housekeeping team and is not directly captured by the CDC score. Use the score as a baseline, not a guarantee.
Which cruise line has the most ships scoring 100?
Royal Caribbean and Carnival typically lead in absolute count of perfect-100 inspections, mostly because they have larger fleets. By percentage of the fleet hitting 100, Disney usually leads. See ships with perfect scores for the live list.
Can I trust a 100 score?
Trust it for the date it was given, not as a permanent guarantee. The inspector found nothing on that visit. Sanitation can change between inspections, especially when crews rotate or supply chains shift. A consistent 95+ pattern over multiple inspections is more reassuring than a single 100.
Where does the underlying data come from?
The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program publishes every inspection at cdc.gov/vsp. We mirror it here, sortable and searchable, with editorial context the CDC site doesn’t provide.
