What Norwegian Viva's Autumn Caribbean Season Is Actually Like
Norwegian Viva (Prima Class, 142,500 tons, 3,219 passengers, 20 decks) spends the autumn doing one thing, and she does it on repeat: leaving Galveston on Saturdays for seven nights. Our schedule shows 14 of these runs between October 31, 2026 and January 30, 2027. Our own records don't list ports for them, so here is what Norwegian and the trade coverage say. Norwegian's Galveston season announcements and resellers describe the 7-night itineraries as drawing on Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Roatan in Honduras, and Harvest Caye, Norwegian's private resort in southern Belize. Every account names the same four ports, but the order shifts from sailing to sailing, and none of them spells out the sea days. Check your exact sailing's day-by-day plan on Norwegian's site before you book a single shore excursion, unless you enjoy surprises at the pier.
The weather and the water
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, and it does not care that you have already paid for your sunscreen. The first five departures (October 31, then November 7, 14, 21 and 28) fall inside it, and the November 28 sailing returns on December 5. Storms can mean reshuffled ports, so keep your travel insurance paperwork handy and your sense of humour handier. From December 1, tropical activity typically drops to very low levels. December in the Caribbean is generally drier, with highs from the upper 70s to the mid-80s °F. Sea temperatures run from the high 70s to the mid-80s, which means the snorkeling water is warm enough that you can't blame the cold for that dramatic sprint back to the boat.
Calm seas aren't guaranteed, though. Winter trade winds and passing fronts can make the water choppy, so pack motion-sickness remedies if your stomach has opinions (mine has a whole committee). Galveston itself is mild in winter and rarely freezes, but a cool, windy sailaway deck is normal, so bring a layer. Yes, even for the person who insists they "never get cold."
How the season breaks down
| Departures | Count | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 31 – Nov 28 | 5 | Inside hurricane season. The Nov 21 sailing covers Thanksgiving (Nov 26). |
| Dec 5 – Dec 12 | 2 | Season over, generally drier, and before the holiday rush. |
| Dec 19 – Dec 26 | 2 | Holiday sailings: Dec 19 covers Christmas, Dec 26 covers New Year's. Expect families and higher prices. |
| Jan 2 – Jan 30 | 5 | Post-holiday winter sailings, with generally dry weather. |
Every departure in that table is a seven-night round trip from Galveston, and Norwegian describes the whole 2026–27 Galveston season as seven-day round-trip Caribbean voyages.
Which sailing suits whom
- Budget hunters: CruiseWeb lists 7-night Galveston fares from $529 per person (double occupancy, taxes and fees included) across 15 sailings between October 31 and April 3, and from $559 across 8 sailings between November 7 and December 26. Those are reseller "from" prices, and the listing doesn't say which departure carries the low fare, so compare dates against current availability before you celebrate.
- Weather-averse: Choose December or January, once hurricane season is over and you can stop refreshing the forecast like it owes you money.
- Holiday families: The Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's sailings are the busiest, so book early and arrive at the port early. The Points Guy lists official Galveston port parking at roughly $22–26 a day at Terminals 25 and 28, and $22–25 at Terminal 10. Viva sails from the port's new Terminal 16, so check the Port of Galveston for the current rate there.
- Anyone wanting more than seven nights: Viva did run 14-night Galveston sailings in January 2026, so it's worth checking Norwegian's site for what's on offer in January 2027.
What to pack
Pack swimwear, sandals, a light rain jacket, and a sweater for the breezy decks and the air-conditioned theatre, which is kept at roughly "meat locker" in my personal experience. Bring water shoes for rocky snorkel entries and reef-friendly sunscreen, because the fish deserve better than your old coconut-scented goop. Drinks add up fast, so read our guide to bringing alcohol on a cruise before you pack the cooler.
Viva was built in 2023, and her most recent CDC inspection (April 14, 2026) scored 100 out of 100, which is the cruise-ship equivalent of a gold star on the fridge. You can browse the full report through our CDC inspection lookup, or see more on the Norwegian Viva ship page.
