One honest caveat before we start. Our own database knows the dates for this season but not the ports. Royal Caribbean’s itinerary page lists the trio of stops below. The line also says ports are subject to change for weather, safety or operational reasons, so confirm your exact day-by-day before you buy a single excursion.

The Ship’s Character, and Who It Suits
Symphony of the Seas is a floating small city with a water-park habit. At 228,081 gross tons and 5,518 guests at double occupancy, it is not an intimate experience, and nobody should pretend otherwise. If your idea of a relaxing cruise is a quiet deck chair and a hardback, this is the plot twist you didn’t order.
If you want choice, though, it’s a good fit. A reviewer who sailed her counted four pools, eleven hot tubs, the Perfect Storm waterslides and the Ultimate Abyss dry slide. Add a zip line, a FlowRider surf simulator and mini-golf, and you have a ship that can occupy a teenager for seven straight days. There’s also an adults-only Solarium for people who need to be away from the teenager.
The same reviewer praised the AquaTheater acrobatics and the Broadway-style shows. They also noted that the free shows fill up quickly, so reserve early. They found staff friendly and embarkation smooth. The complaints were small: tiny bathrooms, a Main Dining Room menu they thought was smaller than before, and Boardwalk-view balcony cabins that face inward and sit under the pool deck’s daytime noise. Sun loungers were mostly gone by noon on sea days, so port days are your friend.
It suits: multigenerational families, friend groups who want things to do, first-timers, and Texans who’d rather drive than fly. It suits less well: anyone allergic to crowds or queues. For the full specs, see our Symphony of the Seas ship page.
On cleanliness, the ship scored 99 out of 100 on its most recent CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection, on Aug 29, 2026. The CDC says ships fail an inspection when they score 85 or below, so anything from 86 up counts as satisfactory, and 99 is about as comfortable as a number gets. The Itineraries on Offer, and Which to Pick
The 7-night recipe is simple, so for most of the season the decision is about the calendar. Our schedule shows 17 sailings in this period. The weekly run of 14 starts with the Oct 18, 2026 departure and continues every Sunday through Jan 17, 2027. Each is a 7-night round trip from Galveston. Our schedule doesn’t show the dates, lengths or ports for the other 3 sailings, so check the itineraries page linked below for those.
Royal Caribbean’s itinerary page lays out the shape of the week:
- Embark in Galveston.
- Two sea days.
- Three port days: Roatán (Honduras), Costa Maya (Mexico) and Cozumel (Mexico), in that order on the page.
- A final sea day, then back in Galveston.
That’s three sea days and three port days. The line says specific ports are subject to change due to weather, safety or operational considerations, so don’t plan anything rigid until your sailing is confirmed.
What about the Bahamas? The ship’s region tag covers the Bahamas, but the 7-night loop above doesn’t include a Bahamas stop. The Bahamas calls, including Perfect Day at CocoCay, belonged to an eight-night rotation that a mid-August trade report said ran alternately with six-night sailings through late October 2026. If a private island is your whole reason for cruising, check each sailing before you book.
Which date to pick:
- Nov 22 sailing: returns Nov 29, so it covers Thanksgiving (Nov 26).
- Dec 20 and Dec 27 sailings: cover Christmas (Dec 25) and New Year’s. The Dec 20 sailing returns Dec 27, and the Dec 27 sailing returns Jan 3.
- Early to mid-November and early December: the weeks that usually sit between the holiday peaks. Cruise lines love a school break, so I’d expect these to be the calmer, cheaper options, but check live prices.
The full list of departures is on the Symphony of the Seas itineraries page.
The Ports, and What’s Genuinely Worth Doing
Costa Maya, Mexico. The pier complex has a shopping village, a pool, a beach club and restaurants. You could spend the whole day there, and plenty of people do. The better move is to leave. Chacchoben, the best-known ruins near the port, is usually a guided visit of about 1.5 hours through jungle where birds and spider monkeys turn up. Combination tours that add Bacalar Lagoon run roughly 5.5 to 7 hours, so check the length against your all-aboard time. Budget for tips, and for a $5 video-camera fee that some listings add.
Roatán, Honduras. Royal Caribbean uses the Coxen Hole dock. West Bay Beach is the postcard option, about 25 minutes by cab, and one guide suggests at least $20 per person round trip. Snorkelling is possible straight from the sand. Gumbalimba Park, with free-roaming macaws, monkeys and iguanas, has admission starting around $35 per person. One guide flags malaria on the Bay Islands, so bring repellent and ask your doctor or the CDC’s travel pages before you go.
Cozumel, Mexico. This is the snorkelling and beach-day port. The calmer west coast suits snorkelling and diving, while the east side has strong currents. Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is a good pick at the southern tip. For ruins, San Gervasio is the island’s main Maya site, and one guide listed entry at $9.50 (prices may have changed). Three cruise terminals sit close to town. The shopping gauntlet at the pier is real, so leave extra time to meet an excursion. Walk a block from the taxi line and agree on a fare before you get in.
Across all three, US dollars are widely accepted. The Roatán sources say so too.
Conditions and Packing for This Season
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs through Nov 30. Seven of the 14 weekly sailings (Oct 18 through Nov 29) depart inside it. The other seven, from Dec 6 to Jan 17, start after it ends. October is the riskiest month in the Gulf and Caribbean, and one cruise guide notes a secondary mid-October peak. November eases. December is when the drier season begins. Daytime highs in the 80s°F are typical early on, with showers between sun. Princess’s range for the year runs from 75°F to 88°F, with sea temperatures from the high 70s to the mid-80s.
A storm is more likely to change your itinerary than ruin your week. Itineraries can be altered or ports swapped, so consider travel insurance for the early-season sailings. Ask about the cancellation terms before you buy.
Galveston itself adds one wrinkle. Cold air over warm water makes fog, and Galveston has a reputation as a fog port. Cruise Critic puts the worst of it from late January through late March, and a Carnival meteorologist says December through March more broadly. My sources had no November-specific delay data. Fog delays are usually a few hours but occasionally a full day or more. If your flight home is tight on the return day, build in slack. A hotel the night before is cheap insurance.
Pack:
- Reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Water shoes for rocky entries and for Roatán’s beaches.
- A light rain layer, because showers are routine.
- Something warmer for breezy evenings on deck, especially on the December and January sailings.
- Closed-toe shoes for ruins.
Documents: Guides say U.S. citizens can usually take a closed-loop cruise like this with a state-issued birth certificate and photo ID. But cruise lines set their own rules, and my research didn’t confirm Honduras specifically. A passport is the safest choice, and it’s the only way home by plane if you have to leave the ship early. Check the rules for your sailing with Royal Caribbean.
Money, and Where the Value Is
CruiseWeb lists this itinerary from $651 per person, taxes and fees included, double occupancy. That is the lowest fare across the whole sailing window from Oct 18, 2026 to Apr 25, 2027, so treat it as a floor rather than your autumn price. For two people, the floor is $1,302. Other listings quoted slightly different starting figures, and fares move daily.
Then come the extras:
- Daily gratuity: $18.50 per person per day in standard cabins and $21.00 in suites, per Royal Caribbean’s gratuity FAQ. Over 7 nights that’s $129.50 per person in a standard cabin, or $259.00 for two people. Prepaying may lock in today’s rate.
- Bar purchases: Royal Caribbean’s FAQ says an automatic 20% gratuity applies on top of beverage prices.
- Parking: Guides quote roughly $105 to $199 for a 7-day stay at port-area lots, and the sources disagree. Pre-booking online sometimes saves money. Confirm on the Port of Galveston’s site.
- Excursions: Plan on the rough figures above. A $35 Gumbalimba entry and a $20 West Bay cab ride, each per person, can add up.
So a couple on the $651 floor fare is looking at about $1,561 once gratuities are added ($1,302 plus $259), before drinks, parking, excursions and extras. Our tipping guide covers whether to add more.
Where the value is: the free stuff. The pools, slides, FlowRider, mini-golf, the AquaTheater and the complimentary dining are all part of the fare. Pick two or three paid extras that matter to you and let the rest go.
Timing: When to Book, and What Sells Out
With the first sailing leaving Oct 18, 2026, five days from now, the earliest departures are already in last-minute territory. Cabin choices will be thin, but fares for unsold cabins can move. If you’re flexible, look at the last weeks of October and early November.
The holiday weeks are the ones that get tight: Nov 22 (Thanksgiving), Dec 20 (Christmas) and Dec 27 (New Year’s). If you want a specific cabin location, book those as early as you can. Princess’s guide notes December is busier, with fuller ships and livelier ports.
One planning note for the longer term: trade reports say Symphony of the Seas sails from Galveston through July 2027, then moves to Fort Lauderdale from August 2027, with Icon of the Seas taking over Galveston in mid-August. If you’re a Texas regular, this autumn is part of a limited run.
FAQ: Your Symphony of the Seas Autumn Questions
Which ports does Symphony of the Seas visit from Galveston in autumn 2026?
Royal Caribbean’s 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary calls at Roatán in Honduras and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico. The week includes three sea days. Royal Caribbean says ports are subject to change due to weather, safety or operational considerations, so check your own sailing. Our own schedule doesn’t record ports, so this comes from Royal Caribbean’s itinerary page and other listings.
Do I need a passport to cruise from Galveston?
Guides say U.S. citizens can usually take a closed-loop cruise with a state-issued birth certificate and a government photo ID. Lines set their own rules, and my research didn’t confirm the position for Honduras. A passport is the safest choice and is the only way to fly home if you have to leave the ship early. Check with Royal Caribbean first.
Is Symphony of the Seas a clean ship?
Its latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection, on Aug 29, 2026, scored 99 out of 100. The CDC says ships fail an inspection with a score of 85 or below, so 86 or above is satisfactory. Scores are a snapshot of one inspection, not a promise about your week. You can look up any ship’s inspection history on our CDC inspection lookup page.
How much is the daily gratuity on Royal Caribbean?
Royal Caribbean’s gratuity FAQ lists $18.50 per person per day for standard cabins and $21.00 for suites. For a 7-night cruise in a standard cabin that’s $129.50 per person. Beverage purchases carry a separate automatic 20% gratuity. You can prepay, and doing so may lock in your rate.
Is it safe to cruise from Galveston during hurricane season?
Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov 30, and October is typically the riskiest month in the Gulf and Caribbean. Cruise lines monitor storms and change itineraries when needed, so a storm is more likely to swap a port than cancel a trip. Consider travel insurance for early sailings. The sailings from Dec 6 onward start after the season ends.
Does Symphony of the Seas go to CocoCay from Galveston this autumn?
Not on the 7-night itinerary I found. Perfect Day at CocoCay appeared on the eight-night rotation, which an August 2026 trade report said ran alternately with six-night sailings through late October. Our schedule shows 7-night sailings from Oct 18 onward. If a Bahamas stop matters to you, check the itinerary on your specific sailing before booking.
The Bottom Line
Symphony of the Seas this autumn is a big, busy, well-scored ship on a dependable week: Roatán, Costa Maya, Cozumel and three sea days, all from a port Texans can drive to. It’s best for families and groups who want plenty to do, and who can handle the crowds in return for slides, shows and a lot of value in the base fare. It’s a poorer fit if you want a calm, small-ship week or a Bahamas private island.
The practical advice is short. Confirm your exact itinerary, bring a passport, and be careful with the early-season weather and the holiday weeks. Budget about $1,561 for two at the $651 floor fare once gratuities are added, before parking, drinks and excursions. Then pick your sailing from the full schedule.
