Quantum of the Seas leaves Brisbane on Tuesday 5 January 2027, sails off with all the confidence of a ship that has somewhere to be, and comes straight back on Friday 8 January having visited precisely nobody. That’s the whole twist: no ports of call, just two full sea days in the middle of a Queensland summer. The ship is the destination, so your prep is about boarding smoothly, beating the sun and not overspending on drinks.
Start Here

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite
Your real deadlines are the check-in window, your passport and anything you want to pre-book. This is a short cruise, so there’s very little slack to fix mistakes once you’re at the pier. On a longer voyage you could fumble the paperwork and recover with a buffet. Here, “I’ll sort it on board” is a plan with a very short runway.
| When | What |
|---|---|
| About 21 Nov 2026 | Online check-in expected to open (45 days before 5 Jan, from an unofficial source). Confirm the date in the app. |
| As soon as it opens | Complete check-in and choose your arrival time. Earlier check-in gives more slot choice. |
| Sat 2 Jan 2027 | Last day to complete check-in in the Royal App (at least 3 days before sailing) |
| Without app check-in | You must finish check-in at the pier at least 2 hours before the published sailing time |
| Before sailing | Buy drinks, Wi-Fi and spa through the app or Cruise Planner. One blog reports a 72-hour pre-cruise cut-off, so don’t leave it late. |
| Until 8 Jul 2027 | Minimum passport validity (6 months after the cruise ends) |
The app also lets you book specialty dining, schedule My Time dining seatings and arrange luggage and transport. Specialty restaurants fill fast, and fan blogs report some premium venues selling out weeks ahead. Book the moment your window opens, unless you enjoy the drama of a sold-out steakhouse.
Can package holders reserve restaurants before sailing? Reports conflict, so check Cruise Planner rather than trusting a forum post. We couldn’t confirm whether your Crown & Anchor tier changes your arrival slot either. Have your number handy anyway.
Embarkation Logistics in Brisbane
The terminal is at Pinkenba, not at Portside Wharf in Hamilton, and that trips people up. Older directions and some hotel listings still point to the old cruise precinct, and somewhere a listing is still insisting otherwise. The current terminal address is 1 Cruise Terminal Drive, Pinkenba QLD 4008, also known as Luggage Point.
- If your GPS doesn’t recognise the address, head for Marine Road, which becomes Cruise Terminal Drive.
- It’s about 12 km (roughly 15 minutes’ drive) from Brisbane Airport and 21 km (roughly 30 minutes) from the CBD.
- The terminal only opens on days a ship is berthed, and there are no storage lockers.
- There is a baggage drop in the Plaza Area near the main entrance.
Arrival works on a slot system. Arrive early and you can’t start boarding. Arrive late and you may wait for a later group. Fan blogs say slots run in half-hour blocks, but we couldn’t find Quantum’s Brisbane range, so use the time on your mobile boarding pass.
Parking
Driving is simple if you prepay. Wilson Parking runs three onsite car parks with more than 900 paid spaces. Car Parks 1 and 2 are prepaid online only, and Car Park 3 has a very limited number of drive-up spaces. Book at wilsonparking.com.au or call 1800 727 546, and you’ll need the Wilson Parking App to prepay.
| Days parked (Car Park 3, prepaid) | Total for the stay |
|---|---|
| 1 | A$31 |
| 2 | A$44 |
| 3 | A$58 |
| 4 | A$71 |
| 7 | A$111 |
| 14 | A$161 |
Read the table as totals for the number of days shown, including the platform fee, not as a per-day rate. Four days costs A$71 in all, not A$71 a day. Each day after 14 adds A$12, and drive-up is A$34 for one day. Parking on 5, 6, 7 and 8 January is four calendar days, so A$71 prepaid. That’s our arithmetic from the rate table, so confirm it on the booking page.
Prepaying doesn’t guarantee a specific bay. If the car park is full, staff will try to find you another location and refund your online payment. Offsite options listed by the port authority include Andrew’s Airport Parking (07 3268 4222), Portside Parking (07 3630 0922) and Con-x-ion (1300 370 471), though that list isn’t exhaustive.
Getting there without a car
There is no public transport and no shuttle bus to the terminal. You’re looking at a taxi or rideshare, so this is not the moment for a heroic bus-and-wheelie-suitcase adventure.
- The taxi rank is about 120 m from the entrance via an undercover walkway. Black and White Cabs is 133 222 and 13Cabs is 13 2227.
- The rideshare pick-up zone is also about 120 m away. Don’t book until you’ve exited the terminal.
- The drop-off zone is a 2-minute set-down, and the driver must stay with the vehicle. Vehicles over 6.5 m or with trailers can’t use it.
- We found no official fare and no Royal Caribbean transfer product for Brisbane, so use your rideshare app’s estimate.
The night before
Treat any hotel claiming to be “walking distance” to the cruise terminal with suspicion. Those descriptions date from when ships used Portside, and the terminal has since moved to Pinkenba. Airport-area and Hamilton hotels, including options along Kingsford Smith Drive, will need a ride of roughly 15 minutes. Some advertise a shuttle to “Portside”, so ask whether it goes to Pinkenba. We have no verified nightly rates, so we’re not naming a winner.
The Ship and How to Work It
Quantum is a 2014-built, 168,666 GT ship refurbished in 2024, and with only two sea days you can’t afford to wing it. Our database gives 4,180 passengers and 1,500 crew across 16 decks. Her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is a perfect 100 from the 10 March 2026 inspection. See the Quantum of the Seas ship page for more.
Dining
The named venues are Chops Grille (steakhouse), Izumi Japanese Cuisine (sushi), Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver and the Bionic Bar, where robots pour your drinks. That’s either the future of hospitality or an extremely efficient way to avoid small talk. Café Two70 and Wonderland are also listed, and a travel agency listing adds American Icon Grill. We couldn’t establish cover charges, the main dining room set-up or whether dining is set-time or My Time, so check Cruise Planner. Royal Caribbean’s itinerary page says Wi-Fi, drink and specialty dining packages cost extra, so budget for those. Gratuities are a separate story that depends on where you booked, and we untangle it in the Money section below.
Entertainment and activities
- Shows: Starwater (acrobatics and tech) and Sonic Odyssey (immersive music and performance). Two70 and North Star are also listed as experiences.
- Active stuff: FlowRider surf simulator, rock climbing wall, Laser Tag: Clash for the Crystal City, the Royal Escape Room and the Vitality Spa.
- SeaPlex bumper cars: shown on the line’s US ship page, so confirm they’re on the Australian deployment.
- RipCord by iFLY: the Australian page calls it the only simulator at sea, but the US page marks it out of service. Confirm it’s running before you plan around it.
The Solarium is adults-only on the Australian deployment, and it’s your escape hatch from the chaos. We couldn’t confirm its minimum age. The ship page only shows a photo of the Hideaway pool, so we can’t give you a pool count.
Families
Adventure Ocean is commonly cited as taking children from 6 months to 17 years. The age bands differ by ship and have been reorganised on newer ones. We haven’t confirmed Quantum’s current bands or whether there’s a nursery, so check the line’s FAQ before you promise a toddler anything. Children 12 and under need adult supervision on the pool deck.
The Ports (Spoiler: There Aren’t Any)
This is a round trip from Brisbane with two sea days and no ports of call. Our database has no port list, and the cruise line’s itinerary page shows Day 1 Brisbane, Days 2 and 3 at sea, and Day 4 Brisbane. That’s a cruise to nowhere in the most literal sense, so there are no excursions, no tender queues and no foreign currency. Don’t bother planning your fridge-magnet collection.
The line says itineraries may change for weather, safety or operational reasons. For other Quantum sailings and the full list, see our Quantum itineraries page.
Conditions and Packing for a Brisbane Summer
Forget “winter” and think hot, humid and sunburnt, because 5 to 8 January is the Southern Hemisphere’s peak summer.
| Measure | January in Brisbane |
|---|---|
| Mean daily maximum | 30.4 °C |
| Mean daily minimum | 21.7 °C |
| Average rainfall | 141.1 mm (Bureau of Meteorology) |
| Sea temperature | Mid to high 20s °C (sources vary) |
| UV | High to extreme |
| Daylight | About 13.6 hours |
This is also southern-hemisphere storm and cyclone season, and January is typical for thunderstorms and heavy rain in south-east Queensland. The 2026/27 Southwest Pacific outlook calls for 7 to 11 named cyclones, at least 4 of them Category 3 or higher, linked to a developing strong El Niño. We found no Bureau of Meteorology outlook for Australian waters specifically, so don’t read that figure as a Coral Sea forecast.
Nobody can say now whether anything threatens 5 to 8 January, and the weather isn’t sharing its plans. Check the Bureau of Meteorology warnings page in the week before you sail. Any itinerary change is at Royal Caribbean’s discretion.
We found no swell or seasickness data for this stretch, and with two full sea days you’ll be in open water more than on a typical 3-night trip. As general advice, not sourced data, a midship, low-deck cabin and motion-sickness remedies are sensible. Our cabin size guide will help you choose.
Packing list
- Light, breathable clothes for 30 °C days and 22 °C nights
- SPF 50+, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen
- A compact rain jacket or poncho
- A light layer for air-conditioned venues
- Swimwear, because the pool is your port
- Medication in your carry-on, in original packaging (sensible general advice)
Leave the clothes iron at home, since irons and steamers are banned. A hair dryer is provided in each stateroom. Also banned are extension cords, power strips and baby monitors, with an exception for chargers that carry a recognised US or European conformity certification. Security has the final say on anything unlisted, and they will not be moved by your charming explanation.
Money
If you booked through Royal Caribbean’s Australia or New Zealand market, gratuities are built into your fare. The price doesn’t change, and you can still tip crew extra at your discretion. Guests booked through other markets pay a per-day charge instead, so don’t assume it applies to you. The last figures we saw reported for US-market bookings were US$18.50 per guest per day for non-suites and US$21 for suites (reported from 1 November 2024), and we haven’t verified a current rate. Our tipping guide covers who gets what.
The fare is the one number we won’t give you. Third-party prices for this sailing vary widely and the currency and cabin category are unclear, so check the booking page. There are no shore excursions to budget for because there are no ports, which is the one line item this cruise politely deletes.
Drinks, Wi-Fi and the maths
A drinks package on a 3-night cruise needs serious drinking to pay back. We found no official Australian dollar price list. One mid-2026 blog quotes the following per day, and says an 18% gratuity is included, but US guides say the 18% is added on top.
| Package (blog estimate) | Per day | 3 days |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | AUD 140 to 160 | AUD 420 to 480 |
| Refreshment | AUD 50 to 60 | AUD 150 to 180 |
Those 3-day totals are simple multiplication, and Royal Caribbean may count package days differently. We haven’t sourced whether everyone in a stateroom must buy the same package, so verify that in Cruise Planner. Buying before you sail is generally cheaper, with the same blog reporting a 10 to 15% markup onboard.
For Wi-Fi we found only US dollar figures from third-party guides, roughly US$18 to US$40 per night depending on ship and date. Check the Cruise Planner for the Australian dollar price on this sailing. We found no sourced prices for photo packages or specialty restaurant covers, so we won’t guess.
Bringing your own
Reportedly, wine is the only alcohol you can bring aboard, so check the line’s policy before you pack the cellar. Royal Caribbean’s prohibited-items page says alcohol is banned except as its Beverage Policy permits. VinePair reports that each guest of drinking age may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day, with boxed wine and other containers prohibited. Royal Caribbean Blog, an unofficial source, says beer and spirits can’t come aboard. Sources conflict on whether anything confiscated is returned, so read our bring-alcohol guide and check the line’s onboard alcohol policy FAQ for the current allowance. We don’t have the current corkage fee for drinking your wine in the dining rooms, and the drinking age for this sailing isn’t confirmed either.
Documents
Bring a passport, because it’s the one answer that works however the rules fall. Royal Caribbean Australia lets guests use other ID on domestic round trips with Australian ports only. Australian citizens can use a passport book, an Australian driver’s licence or a government-issued laminated photo ID. Other nationalities can use a passport book, a driver’s licence or a laminated photo ID. But if the itinerary leaves Australia, a passport book is required.
Here’s the plot twist: Royal Caribbean’s pages don’t say whether a sea-days-only getaway counts as domestic. The line still “strongly recommend[s]” a passport, so that’s the safe call, and you can ask the line directly if you’d rather gamble on the licence.
- Documents must be valid for at least 6 months after your cruise ends, which means 8 July 2027 for this sailing.
- Bring originals, not photocopies, and make sure names match across all documents.
- Children 17 and under can use a Medicare card as sole ID on domestic cruises if all guests share the same last name. Because it isn’t confirmed that this sailing counts as domestic, pack a passport for every child.
- If a child’s surname differs from a parent’s, Royal Caribbean’s know-before-you-go page says to bring an original or certified birth certificate.
- Children travelling without a parent or legal guardian, or with a different last name, need additional documents. The line links a sample permission letter.
- Non-Australians should check visa or ETA requirements with the Department of Home Affairs.
Marijuana is prohibited even with medical authorisation. The onboard medical centre is extension 51 from your stateroom phone. We found no rule on prescription medicines, so pack them in your carry-on.
FAQ: Your Quantum Brisbane Questions
Where does the 3-night Quantum cruise from Brisbane go?
Nowhere, on purpose. The line’s itinerary page shows Brisbane on Day 1, two days at sea, then Brisbane again on Day 4. There are no ports of call, so no excursions or shore time. Expect to spend Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 January using the ship’s pools, shows and restaurants. Itineraries can change for weather, safety or operational reasons.
Do I need a passport for a 3-night Brisbane cruise?
Bring one. Royal Caribbean accepts a driver’s licence or laminated photo ID for Australian citizens on domestic cruises, but its pages don’t say whether a sea-days-only trip counts as domestic. The line still strongly recommends a passport. If you travel on one, it must be valid for at least 6 months after the cruise ends, so until 8 July 2027.
What time does Quantum of the Seas leave Brisbane on 5 January 2027?
Listings point to about 4:00 pm, with a return around 6:30 am on Friday 8 January, but some show 3:00 pm and 5:30 am. We can’t confirm either from the line’s own dated booking page. Check your booking or the Cruise Planner, and use the arrival slot on your mobile boarding pass rather than the departure time to plan your day.
How do I get to the Brisbane cruise terminal without a car?
By taxi or rideshare only. There’s no public transport and no shuttle bus to the CBD or airport. The terminal is about 12 km from Brisbane Airport and 21 km from the CBD. The taxi rank and rideshare zone are both about 120 m from the entrance, and you shouldn’t book a rideshare until you’ve left the terminal.
Are gratuities included on Quantum of the Seas from Brisbane?
If you booked through Royal Caribbean’s Australia or New Zealand market, yes. The service charge is built into the fare and you can still tip extra. Guests booked through other markets pay a per-day charge instead. We found no current figure for that charge, so check your booking confirmation.
Can I bring wine on board Quantum of the Seas?
Reportedly yes, in a very small way. VinePair reports one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per guest of drinking age, on embarkation day, with boxed wine and other containers prohibited. Royal Caribbean Blog says beer and spirits can’t be brought aboard. Royal Caribbean’s own prohibited-items page says alcohol is banned except as its Beverage Policy permits, so confirm the current allowance in the line’s onboard alcohol policy FAQ before you pack. Sources conflict on whether confiscated items are returned and on current corkage.
Is January a bad time to cruise from Brisbane because of cyclones?
It’s the storm season, so check the forecast. The 2026/27 Southwest Pacific outlook calls for 7 to 11 named cyclones, but it isn’t a Coral Sea forecast, and we found no Bureau of Meteorology cyclone outlook for Australian waters. Nobody can say now what 5 to 8 January will bring. Check the Bureau of Meteorology warnings page in the week before sailing.
The Bottom Line
This is a ship-as-destination midweek getaway, so do the boring admin early and spend the sailing doing nothing, magnificently. Get check-in done as soon as it opens (about 21 November, unofficially), and make sure it’s finished no later than Saturday 2 January. Pack a passport valid until 8 July 2027, prepay parking at A$71 for four days if you’re driving, and bring a ridiculous amount of sunscreen. Confirm the departure and return times on your booking, because we can’t promise them yet. More ports, more sailings and more detail live on our Quantum itineraries page.
