What Quantum of the Seas's Autumn Australia/New Zealand Season Is Actually Like

Quick calendar check first, because it trips people up every year: on the site we file this stretch of Quantum of the Seas's schedule under "autumn" as part of our standard seasonal tagging, but if you're actually in Brisbane boarding one of these sailings, you're leaving in Southern Hemisphere spring and, by December, full-blown summer. Locals will laugh if you turn up expecting sweater weather.

Quantum of the Seas has been doing this Brisbane residency for several seasons running now, and the ship itself is in good shape for it — a 2014-built, 168,666-tonne Quantum Class vessel that went through a refurbishment in 2024, carrying up to 4,180 guests and 1,500 crew across 16 decks. Where these sailings actually go

Our own itinerary data for this batch of departures doesn't carry port-by-port detail, so we went and checked Royal Caribbean's published itineraries directly — and the pattern isn't quite what you'd guess from the length alone. The 3-night "Brisbane Getaway" is genuinely just that: two days at sea and back on the wharf, with no ports of call at all, so don't book it expecting a Queensland coast fix. The 4-night "Whitsundays Getaway" is where that coastal stop actually lives, with a single call at Airlie Beach. Book 7 nights and you're on the South Pacific run to Mystery Island and Port Vila, both in Vanuatu — Noumea isn't part of this one. Go the full 8 nights and Royal Caribbean adds Noumea, New Caledonia to the same two Vanuatu stops, making it the only length in this batch that does the three-country circuit. New Zealand itineraries are part of Quantum's broader Brisbane season, but they land later in the schedule than the window covered here — so if Milford Sound is the goal, you'll want to look further out.

Weather and sea conditions

October and November are Brisbane's shoulder months — warm days, cooler evenings, and seas that are generally settled before the wet season builds. By December and into January you're in full South Pacific summer: hot, humid, with afternoon storms that roll in fast around Vanuatu and New Caledonia. Officially, the South Pacific cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April, with the real risk concentrated January through March. It's rare for a cyclone to force a major reroute this early in the season, but Royal Caribbean will adjust an itinerary rather than sail into one, so keep expectations flexible on the December and January departures.

Which length suits whom

Sixteen sailings run in this stretch overall, and the pattern is clear: book October or November for quieter ships and softer prices, and expect the December departures to run family-heavy and closer to full fare once Queensland school holidays kick in mid-month.

• Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest — the sun in Vanuatu and New Caledonia is brutal even under cloud
• A light rain shell for afternoon squalls on the island stops
• Something with sleeves for early-morning deck time in October/November, when it's still cool before sunrise
• Modest swimwear coverage for village visits at Mystery Island and Port Vila, where beach etiquette is more conservative than a resort pool
