What Norwegian Joy's Autumn Caribbean Season Is Actually Like

Autumn on Joy is a season of two halves. The first is a ship-sized commute, with a very large vessel wandering down the Pacific and through the Panama Canal like it's late for something. The second is Miami short-hop season, which is very Bahamas-heavy and very "back by Monday."

The repositioning bit (October)

Joy starts October in the Pacific. Our records show a 5-night sailing from Vancouver departing 2 October, but we don't hold its ports. Cruise Timetables lists the Pacific Coast voyage a little differently: a 6-night sailing leaving Vancouver on 1 October, calling at Seattle, Astoria and San Francisco, and ending in Los Angeles on 7 October. That's a one-day and one-night mismatch, which is exactly the kind of thing that ruins a flight booking. Check the exact departure date and embarkation port with Norwegian before you buy airfare.

Next comes the 16-night one-way trip from Los Angeles to Miami (7-23 October). The same timetable lists Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal, Puerto Caldera, Panama City, Cartagena and Ocho Rios. It's a real Panama Canal itinerary, and it isn't a Caribbean week with a suitcase attached. It's also the wettest, stickiest part of the season, so bring rain gear and expect your hair to have opinions about the humidity.

The Miami bit (late October to December)

Once Joy is in Miami, most sailings are 3, 4 or 5 nights. Ports on the sailings we checked:

• 3- and 4-night Bahamas runs: Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. The 23-27 October sailing is a themed Christmas cruise (yes, in October, we don't make the rules) and only calls at Great Stirrup Cay.
• 27 October-1 November: The UberSoca sailing, a 5-night soca-music party cruise from Miami. Cruise Timetables lists calls at Great Stirrup Cay and Grand Turk, and the booking page lists a minimum age of 21.
• 5-night November runs: Themed sailings to Jamaica and Grand Cayman. 1 Nov visits Montego Bay. 6 Nov visits Montego Bay and George Town. 11 Nov visits Falmouth and Ocho Rios.

Some of those are themed cruises (soca, reggae, chefs, and so on), so you may be sharing the ship with a very specific crowd. Read the sailing name before you book, unless you enjoy surprises at the buffet.

Weather and seas

Hurricane season officially runs 1 June to 30 November. Princess says early November can still bring passing showers, while late November tends to be a calmer window before the holiday rush. Holland America puts November temperatures in the 70s and 80s °F. For 2026 specifically, the Atlantic still hadn't produced a single hurricane as of 29 September, a record-slow start blamed on a strong El Niño and its wind shear. Tropical Storm Fay flirted with hurricane strength in September, then wind shear weakened it. Forecasters still warn that a quiet season doesn't rule out a storm. Itineraries can change for weather, so buy travel insurance and don't plan a wedding around a port call.

Ports, honestly

Great Stirrup Cay is the big news. Norwegian's first pier there opened in late December 2025, then closed on 1 April 2026 so a second berth could be added. Travel outlets now report the new two-berth pier is open, which would mean docking instead of tendering. Norwegian's own waterpark page doesn't say whether ships dock or tender, so check your sailing's port-day details before you count on it. The 19-slide Great Tides Waterpark opened on 4 September 2026. Admission is a separate purchase, so budget for it. Nassau is a straightforward cruise-port stop that's fine for a few hours. Jamaica and Grand Cayman are the better reasons to choose a 5-night sailing over a Bahamas hop.

Which length for whom

• 3 nights: A trial run, a birthday, or you have a hard limit on vacation days.
• 4 nights: The same Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay mix with a little more time on board.
• 5 nights: Choose it for a Jamaica or Cayman port.
• 16 nights: Panama Canal fans and anyone who genuinely loves sea days.

Pricing quirk: Thanksgiving

Fares in a third-party listing (a snapshot, so check current prices) show how much the holiday matters. These were inside and balcony fares. NCL normally quotes fares per person, so confirm the basis when you book.

The Thanksgiving-week inside fare is $145 higher than 16 Nov and $130 higher than 30 Nov. Christmas week will be busy too.

What to pack

Pack swimwear, sunscreen and a hat. Add a light rain jacket for early November and for the Central American ports in October. Bring a light layer for breezy evenings and the air conditioning, which on cruise ships is set to "meat locker." If you're doing a Panama Canal day, bring closed shoes and bug spray.

On the ship

Joy carries 3,804 passengers and 1,821 crew, and it was refurbished in 2024. That refit added a big thermal suite and an expanded Vibe Beach Club, and it removed the Galaxy Pavilion VR arcade and the laser tag.
