The Tea

Curacao is Aruba's artsy, less-traveled sibling — and arguably the better port. The Handelskade waterfront in Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the iconic pastel-colored buildings that show up in every Caribbean screensaver. It's genuinely beautiful and one of the most photogenic port stops anywhere.

The port is in walking distance of Punda (the shopping district) and Otrobanda (the more local, less touristy side), connected by the famous Queen Emma pontoon bridge. The street art scene is excellent, the food is a unique Dutch-Caribbean fusion, and the snorkeling at Playa Lagun is fantastic.

The tea: Curacao is what happens when a Caribbean island has actual culture beyond cruise tourism. It's not as polished as Aruba, and some areas require awareness, but the authenticity is refreshing. Prices are reasonable by Caribbean standards, and the Level 1 advisory means safety isn't a concern. This is the underrated Caribbean port.
