Norwegian Joy 31 Jan 2027 Miami: Deadlines, Ports & Costs

Norwegian Joy leaves Miami on Sunday 31 January 2027 and, reportedly, waddles back in on Friday 5 February at 7:00 AM. That’s five nights, two reported sea days, Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau. What makes it worth a look is a ship fresh from a 2024 Rotterdam makeover, with a Thermal Suite and an adults-only beach club squatting where laser tag used to live. NCL’s private island also has a paid waterpark that opened on 4 September 2026. Our database has no ports for this sailing, so the route below comes from outside listings. Check it against your own NCL booking before you plan anything around it. Cruise lines love a plot twist.

Start Here

  • Today (23 Oct, 100 days out): go find your passport. Yes, right now. Non-US citizens need one valid beyond 5 Aug 2027, six months past the ship’s return.
  • By 2 Nov (day 90): look at specialty dining and excursion booking in the Cruise Planner, because NCL’s own page gives conflicting windows and refuses to pick a side.
  • From about 10 Jan: online check-in should open, 21 days out. That is NCL’s wording for a Vancouver sailing; we assume Miami matches.
  • By 27 Jan: finish check-in (NCL recommends at least four days before sailing) and buy any NCL transfers, which close at the same point.
  • Sat 30 Jan: be in your pre-cruise hotel, and prepay the service charge if you want to, up to 24 hours before sailing.
Norwegian Joy 31 Jan 2027: the deadlines that matter. Passport expiry check (non-US citizens): 5 Aug 2027; Pre-book specialty dining and excursions: 2 Nov; Finish online check-in: 27 Jan; Check-in cutoff: 28 Jan; Prepay the service charge: 30 Jan.
The short version, in one picture. Save it to Pinterest for later.

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite

Do the booking jobs first, because the clock on the pretty stuff is already running. NCL’s preparation page gives two windows for pre-booking specialty dining and shore excursions, “90–120 days” and “60–90 days”, and doesn’t settle which applies. Helpful. Most third-party guides say 90 days, which lands on 2 November. At 100 days out, you’re probably in the window already, so the good dinner slots are being eyed by people with fewer scruples than you.

Loyalty members, meanwhile, have already sprinted past some of their deadlines. Platinum, Sapphire and Diamond guests get early dining pre-booking at 125 days out (about 28 September), and Ambassador guests at 130 days (about 23 September). Priority check-in and embarkation starts at Platinum. Tier benefits apply on sailings of five nights or longer, and this one is exactly five nights, so it qualifies right at the threshold, with no room to spare.

One practical warning, delivered with love: NCL has a no-show fee of $10 per person for specialty restaurants unless you cancel or change at least two hours ahead. That comes from an older third-party report, so check the current terms before you treat a reservation as a casual suggestion.

Embarkation Logistics

Plan on Terminal B at PortMiami, but confirm it in your NCL documents. Cruise Critic and The Points Guy list Terminal B as NCL’s terminal, and the official PortMiami page ties “Garage B (Norwegian Cruise Line)” to it. Joy’s terminal for 2027 isn’t confirmed, so the final word has to come from your own paperwork. Yes, you have to read the documents. I know.

How early to arrive depends on whether you checked in online. NCL’s FAQ says to arrive no later than one hour before your scheduled embarkation time if you’ve checked in online, and two hours before if you haven’t. Separately, you must be checked in and aboard no later than one hour before the departure time on your cruise documents, or you don’t sail, and the ship will not hold a dramatic pause for you. Follow the arrival time printed on your own documents, not a rumour from a forum.

One third-party site reports that NCL staggers arrival times and puts priority guests (Latitudes Platinum and above, Haven, suites) at 10:30–11:00 AM. That isn’t on NCL’s FAQ, so treat it as reported only.

Getting from the airport

Rideshare split between people usually beats per-person shuttles. Uber’s route page puts the airport-to-port trip at about 10 miles with a $26 average price, though older sources say about 8 miles. Our estimate is roughly $20–$30 per car. NCL sells transfers, with the price shown at booking. Skip any old “flat taxi fare” figures, since one 2025 blog says Miami-Dade’s flat rates were abolished in 2022. That cheap fixed fare is now a ghost story.

Parking at the port

Garage B is the NCL garage, and it takes no debit cards. Accepted: cash, Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover. Garages are staffed 6 a.m.–5 p.m. on cruise days.

GarageRate
Garage B (NCL)$35 per vehicle per day, short- or long-term (rate effective 1 Jan 2025)
Garages C, D, F, G and Surface Lot E$28 per day or fraction for overnight; $10 per day short-term, no overnight
Garage AA$35 per day overnight; $20 per day short-term

The sailing spans six calendar days (31 Jan to 5 Feb). At $35 a day that could be $210, or $175 if billed per night. How NCL counts the days isn’t confirmed, so ask when you reserve. Recheck the C/D/F/G/E rate before you commit, because a quick search summary showed $25 and the page itself showed $28.

The night before

Book a hotel with a port shuttle for Saturday 30 January. Arriving on the morning of a 4:00 PM sailing is a bold plan, and flights have a way of testing it. The “from” rates below were captured in July 2026 and vary by date. Shuttle prices are per person, so check the Jan 30 rate.

HotelDistanceShuttleFrom, per night
Comfort Suites Miami Airport North6 miFree; return about $10 per adult$105
Comfort Inn & Suites Miami Intl Airport8 miFree; return $10 adult / $5 child$110
Comfort Inn & Suites Downtown Brickell-Port of Miamiabout 1–2 mi$12 prepaid$130
YVE Hotel Miami1 mi$9; book 24 hours ahead$140

Embassy Suites Miami Intl Airport8 mi$10, shared; 7am–11pm$180
DoubleTree Grand Biscayne Bay1 mi$7.50; park-and-cruise package$180

Hilton Miami Downtown and Hyatt Regency reportedly have no usable cruise shuttle, so you’d be on Uber or Metromover.

The Ship and How to Work It

Joy is a 2017 ship that got a real 2024 makeover, so book around the new bits. The Rotterdam drydock ran about 22 January to 12 February 2024. After it, NCL counts 21 bars and lounges, 16 restaurants and a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade. That’s a lot of places to be disappointed by a cocktail, so choose wisely. Our Norwegian Joy ship page has the full profile, and the ship’s CDC score of 100 came from its 12 July 2026 inspection.

What the refit added

  • Thermal Suite (Mandara Spa, Deck 16): four senses loungers, a sauna, an ice room and a steam room. It replaced the Galaxy Pavilion VR arcade (goodbye, goggles) and needs a separate paid pass.
  • New cabins: 24 balcony staterooms plus 40 spa balcony staterooms with direct spa access, 64 in total. Two Haven owner’s suites became three-bedroom.
  • Vibe Beach Club (Decks 19–20): adults-only (18+) with an oversized hot tub and limited access by pass. Book online or at guest services after boarding.

Don’t expect laser tag or the old Observation Lounge, and don’t pack slide dreams until NCL says there are slides. Vibe took over the laser tag arena, and our sources don’t say the lasers moved anywhere else, so consider that chapter closed. The refit carved the 24 new balcony rooms out of the Observation Lounge space, so don’t promise yourself the lounge of old. Whether any version of it survives isn’t confirmed, so check the deck plan. On slides, CruiseMapper mentions an “Aqua Park”, but slide details for Joy aren’t confirmed, so check NCL’s ship page before you bring the swim goggles and the high hopes. Cruise Critic says Joy’s pools are smaller and its go-kart track tighter than on newer ships, and we haven’t seen an official pool count.

Eating

It’s Freestyle dining, so there’s no fixed seating, and the specialty venues carry up-charges. That means you’re free to eat whenever you like, and equally free to watch your bill grow. This venue list is undated third-party material, so confirm what’s current in the Cruise Planner.

TypeVenues
ComplimentarySavor and Taste (Deck 6), Garden Café buffet (Deck 16), American Diner pool grill (Deck 17), The Local Bar & Grill (Deck 7, open around the clock)
SpecialtyFood Republic, Ocean Blue, Cagney’s Steakhouse, La Cucina, Le Bistro (all Deck 8); Teppanyaki (Deck 6)
OtherThe Manhattan Room (Deck 7, multi-course dinners)

Older reviews, from 2022–23, rate Le Bistro best and call Ocean Blue “our best meal”. They give Cagney’s a mixed verdict, and describe Food Republic as tapas-style with an Asian slant. Food Republic is reportedly bookable only onboard, so no pre-trip planning for you. Current prices aren’t confirmed, and anything from 2023 is too old to quote.

Families

  • Splash Academy: ages 3–12, and kids must be 3 at registration and potty-trained (Deck 5, per a third-party deck guide).
  • Entourage: ages 13–17. Age is counted as of the sailing, so a teen who turns 18 mid-cruise can’t join. Birthdays: the ultimate plot twist.
  • Guppies: open play for ages 6 months to 3 years, with a parent.
  • Late-night kids care: a paid extra. Details for this ship aren’t verified.

Things to do

  • Go-karts: a two-level outdoor track on Decks 18–19. Drivers must be 1.40–2.08 m and no more than 120 kg.
  • Joy Theater (Decks 6–7): Broadway-style and game shows. The 2027 line-up isn’t confirmed, though the 2024 relaunch named “Elements” and “Deal or No Deal”.
  • Cavern Club (Deck 8): a Beatles-themed bar with live music.
  • The Haven: its own restaurant (Deck 18) and the two-storey Horizon Lounge (Deck 17), for Haven guests only. The velvet rope is real.
  • Joy Casino: 18+.

The Ports

The reported route is Miami, a sea day, Great Stirrup Cay, a sea day, Nassau, Miami. It comes from third-party timetables and isn’t confirmed on NCL’s site, and the listings don’t entirely agree with each other. One shows the two ports in the opposite order, another has day 2 as “To Be Announced”, and a stray listing with Puerto Plata and St Thomas doesn’t fit a five-night cruise at all. Treat it as a draft script, not the final cut.

These are the listed port hours, not all-aboard times. The listings don’t give an all-aboard time, so get yours from the NCL app or your cruise documents once they’re available and treat that as the deadline. The fuller rundown lives on our Norwegian Joy itineraries page.

Great Stirrup Cay

The free stuff covers most needs, and the paid stuff is for kids and slide people. According to one travel blog, Jackson Jetsetting, a pier opened on 28 December 2025, with Norwegian Getaway first to dock. The same blog says it closed for several months in 2026 for a second berth, with tendering in the meantime, and reopened in late summer. That reopening isn’t officially confirmed, so whether your ship will dock or tender on 2 February isn’t known. Check NCL’s site or app closer to sailing. Also check whether 2 February is a “double-call” day with two ships, since paid areas sell out faster when the island gets crowded.

  • Free: beaches and loungers, tram service, Great Life Lagoon (a heated 1.4-acre pool with swim-up bars), Splash Harbor splash pad, Horizon Park, Hammock Bay and complimentary dining.
  • Great Tides Waterpark: 19 slides on nearly six acres. NCL’s page shows $89.99 for adults, struck through from $99, while other outlets reported $99.99 at launch and $79.99 on one review sailing.
  • Waterpark rules: ages 0–3 are free, anyone 17 or under needs a ticketed adult, and slide height minimums run from 36 to 48 inches.
  • Vibe Shore Club (18+): $109.99 per person.
  • Silver Cove Ocean Villa: $599 for up to six guests, spa extra. Cabanas cost extra too.

Those are October 2026 prices, so confirm in myNCL. Free at Sea shore excursion credits can’t be used for waterpark admission, so don’t plan on that freebie. Our own take: unless you have kids or a slide habit, the free lagoon and beach do the job beautifully.

Nassau

Nassau is easy on foot, so you don’t need to book a thing to have a good day. The ship docks at Prince George Wharf, which has six berths. Downtown is within a 10-minute walk, and Bay Street shopping is about one block from the terminal. Public “jitney” buses also connect the port and the city.

  • Beaches: Junkanoo, Cabbage and Cable are the popular ones.
  • Day passes: Margaritaville Beach Resort, Warwick Paradise Island, Breezes, RIU Palace Paradise Island and Baha Mar all offer them.
  • Boat tours: Pearl Island, Blue Lagoon Island and Balmoral Island trips run about US$80–110 per person.
  • Junkanoo: the parades fall on 1 Jan, 10 Jul and 26 Dec, so you’ll miss them. Sorry.

NCL’s Nassau excursion list and prices aren’t confirmed here, so compare the Cruise Planner against those market rates. Whatever you book, be back well ahead of the all-aboard time, which you can confirm in the NCL app or your cruise documents. The ship has a schedule and no sense of sentiment.

Money in Nassau is simple, and so is the safety advice. US dollars are accepted at parity with the Bahamian dollar. Taxis are metered, with surcharges often applying for more than two passengers and for extra luggage. Most reportedly don’t take cards, so ask first, and about 15% is the customary tip.

The State Department rates the Bahamas Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution”, with the advisory renewed on 28 July 2026 and the level unchanged. It warns that violent crime can occur anywhere, most of it in Nassau and Freeport. It also says to stay alert in the “Over the Hill” area south of Shirley Street, which is about two blocks south of the terminal. Skip independent jet ski and watercraft rentals, since warnings about them remain. Weapons and ammunition are banned, even in small amounts, and the live advisory is worth a re-read before you sail.

Conditions and Packing for Early February

Expect mild, mostly dry weather with a wind chill problem on deck. The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and this sailing is about two months after it ends. That puts hurricanes outside the season, though storms occasionally occur outside it, because nature doesn’t read calendars.

February normals (1991–2020, airport)MiamiNassau
Mean high78.2°F79.9°F
Mean low63.2°F65.3°F
Rainfall2.15 in (55 mm)1.90 in (48 mm)
Rain daysabout 6.5about 5

Great Stirrup Cay has no climate data of its own, so Nassau is the nearest guide. Water is roughly in the low-to-mid 70s°F, which is swimmable but not bathwater, so the heated lagoon looks like the smarter plan.

Winter cold fronts are the real itinerary risk. A boater’s guide says to expect at least one front every ten days, with winds often over 25 knots at peak. On 24 January 2025, gale-force winds led four ships to skip scheduled Bahamian private-island calls. Great Stirrup Cay is the call most exposed to wind and swell, and the Miami–Bahamas crossing can be bumpy behind a front. No forecast exists this far out, so look about seven days before sailing (24 January).

  • Light jacket or sweater for breezy evenings and early mornings, with a wind-proof layer ahead of a heavy coat.
  • Swimwear, sunscreen and sandals for island days.
  • A light rain layer for passing showers.
  • Seasickness remedies if you’re prone, because the risk is moderate and depends on the week.

That list is our inference from the temperature data, not an NCL packing list.

Money

The fare is the opening bid, so budget for the service charge, drinks and anything that tempts you at Great Stirrup Cay. We’re not printing a fare for this sailing, because the listings disagree on cabin category and taxes, and none of them is a quote. Your NCL booking page shows the real per-person price for your cabin.

ItemFigure5-night total
Service charge, Club Balcony Suite and below$20 per person per day$100 per person
Service charge, Haven and suites$25 per person per day$125 per person
Drink package gratuity (2–5 night sailings, from 1 May 2026, one reported source)$32 per person per day$160 per person, on top of the service charge
Free at Sea Plus$49.99 per person per day$249.95 per person before gratuities
Wine corkage$15 (750 ml), $30 (1,500 ml)Waived with any beverage package

The service charge reportedly applies to guests aged 3 and over, so two adults in a standard cabin pay $200 in total. Check where Mini-Suites land between the $20 and $25 tiers. Spa, salon, drinks and specialty dining also carry a 20% charge, and our cruise tipping guide covers who gets what. Free at Sea Plus gets $15 off with prepaid service charges, though it isn’t clear whether that is per day.

Free at Sea is a promotion, so check whether your fare has it. NCL’s page lists an open bar for ages 21 and over, two specialty meals on a 5–6 night sailing, 150 Wi-Fi minutes per guest, and a $50 shore excursion credit per port for guest 1 only. Gratuities on the drinks and dining are not free, because of course they aren’t. Whether a regular drinks package works at Great Stirrup Cay is contradictory in the reports, so confirm in the Cruise Planner before you bank on it.

A standalone drink package price isn’t confirmed, and neither are current specialty or Wi-Fi totals. Third-party pages list Wi-Fi passes at $29.99 and $39.99 but disagree on per day versus whole cruise, so price it in the Cruise Planner. Drinkers who won’t manage five days of heavy consumption should compare à la carte before prepaying, since $32 × 5 is $160 in gratuity before the package itself.

Wine is the cheap trick. NCL allows wine and champagne aboard, screened, and box wine is banned. Beer and liquor can’t be brought aboard. Alcohol bought in port or the shops is held until the last night or debarkation morning, and the drinking age is 21. Our bring alcohol on a cruise guide has the rest.

Documents

Bring a passport, even though a closed-loop sailing technically lets some US citizens board without one. This cruise starts and ends in Miami and stays in the Bahamas. NCL says US citizens need a valid passport, or proof of citizenship plus a government-issued photo ID. Accepted proof is a state-certified birth certificate, a naturalization or citizenship certificate, a consular report of birth abroad, an enhanced driver’s license or a valid passport card. NCL says photocopies and pictures won’t be accepted, so bring the original or a certified copy. The photo on your phone is not a document.

The practical argument for a passport is a medical emergency in Nassau. If you have to fly home, a birth certificate won’t get you on the plane. CBP also warns you may still be asked for a passport by the countries the ship visits.

  • Children under 16: proof of citizenship, but no photo ID.
  • Non-US citizens: a passport not expiring within six months of the cruise’s return.
  • Green card holders: carry the card plus a valid passport from your country of citizenship, or you’ll be denied boarding.
  • Visa Waiver nationals: a valid ESTA or US visa before boarding.
  • Chinese 10-year B1/B2 holders: proof of EVUS enrollment at check-in.

Bahamas visa rules depend on nationality, so check immigration.gov.bs. NCL’s rule on parental consent letters for minors travelling without both parents isn’t confirmed, which isn’t the same as there being none, so ask NCL.

Medication and the banned list can cost you more than a missed document. NCL says to bring enough for the whole voyage plus 10 extra days. Carry it in original containers in hand luggage, with a copy of any prescription. Narcotics need a valid prescription. A personal cooler for medical items is allowed up to 12″ × 12″ × 12″. Guests can’t sail if they’ll have entered the 24th week of pregnancy by the cruise’s end.

NCL’s prohibited list is long. Highlights are cannabis, CBD and THC products (medical marijuana included), drones, clothing irons, candles and incense, hoverboards, walkie-talkies, laser pointers, knives with blades over 4 in (10.16 cm) and weapons of any kind. Hair dryers and flat irons are allowed but can be pulled by security if hazardous. Pets are banned except service animals.

FAQ: Your Norwegian Joy 31 January 2027 Questions

Do I need a passport for a Bahamas cruise from Miami?

Not strictly if you’re a US citizen, because this is a closed-loop sailing. NCL accepts a valid passport, or proof of citizenship (such as a state-certified birth certificate) plus a government photo ID. Photocopies and pictures are refused. Non-US citizens need a passport valid beyond six months after the cruise returns. We’d still bring a passport for medical emergencies.

What time should I arrive at PortMiami for Norwegian Joy?

Follow the arrival time on your own NCL documents. NCL’s FAQ says to arrive no later than one hour before your scheduled embarkation time if you’ve checked in online, or two hours before if not. All guests must also be aboard one hour before the departure time on their documents. A 4:00 PM departure is reported but unconfirmed.

How much is parking at the Miami cruise port?

Garage B, the NCL garage, is $35 per vehicle per day, according to the official PortMiami page. Other garages and Lot E are $28 per day or fraction for overnight, and Garage AA is $35 overnight. Debit cards aren’t accepted. This sailing spans six calendar days, so Garage B could be $210 or $175, depending on how NCL counts.

What is the service charge on a 5-night NCL cruise?

Per NCL’s preparation page, it’s $20 per person per day for Club Balcony Suite and below, and $25 for The Haven and suites. Over five nights that’s $100 or $125 per person. It reportedly applies from age 3. Drink package gratuity is separate, and one report puts it at $32 per person per day on 2–5 night sailings.

Can I bring wine on Norwegian Joy?

Yes, wine and champagne are allowed and screened, but box wine isn’t. Corkage is $15 for a 750 ml bottle and $30 for a 1,500 ml magnum when opened in a restaurant, public area or cabin. Guests with any beverage package aren’t charged. Beer and liquor can’t come aboard, and alcohol bought in port is held until the end of the cruise.

Will early February weather affect the Bahamas stops?

It can. Hurricanes aren’t a realistic concern, since the season ended 30 November. Winter cold fronts are the risk, and on 24 January 2025 gale-force winds led four ships to skip Bahamian private-island calls. Great Stirrup Cay is the most exposed stop. Check the forecast about a week out and listen for announcements onboard.

Is the Great Tides Waterpark worth paying for?

Probably only with kids or a real slide habit. NCL’s page shows $89.99 for adults, with 19 slides on nearly six acres, and Free at Sea excursion credits can’t be used for admission. The free beach and the heated Great Life Lagoon cover most needs. That’s our opinion, and it depends on whether your kids can be talked out of slides.

The Bottom Line

This is a tidy five-night Bahamas escape with a refreshed ship and a decent chance of pleasant weather, as long as a February front doesn’t rearrange the island day and leave you eyeing the buffet in protest. Do the paperwork early, treat the port list and times as provisional until NCL confirms them, and budget for the service charge, which isn’t included in the fare and can be prepaid. If you only do three things this week, check your passport, look at what you want to pre-book, and book that Saturday-night hotel. Future you will be insufferably smug about it.
