Norwegian Joy is spending the autumn doing two jobs. First she drags herself from the Pacific coast to Florida the long way round. Then she settles into a run of short Miami cruises to the Bahamas and a few themed sailings. Which of those you’d want depends on what kind of person you are, so let’s sort that out.

The Ship’s Character, and Who She Suits

Joy is a big, busy, gadget-heavy ship. She carries 3,804 passengers and 1,821 crew, which works out to roughly two guests per crew member. She is not an intimate boutique experience. She is the cruise equivalent of a theme park that happens to float.

The signature act is the two-level Joy Speedway, a go-kart track at the top of the ship. There is also an Aqua Park with slides, a kids’ water zone and mini golf. Dining follows Norwegian’s Freestyle idea: three complimentary main dining rooms (The Manhattan Room, Taste and Savour), a buffet, and paid specialty restaurants including Ocean Blue, Cagney’s Steakhouse, La Cucina and Teppanyaki. Splash Academy covers ages 3 to 12. Solo cabins exist. The Haven, the ship-within-a-ship suite complex, is there for anyone who wants to be waited on.

The January 2024 drydock changed the ship. Norwegian added 24 balcony cabins by taking a slice out of the Observation Lounge. The Galaxy Pavilion VR arcade became a Thermal Suite. The laser tag arena on Deck 20 was absorbed into an expanded adults-only Vibe Beach Club. So if an older review raves about laser tag, it is describing a ship that no longer has it. Tragic, but it’s been more than two years.

She suits: families with restless kids, first-timers who want a lot to do, groups celebrating something, and anyone who wants a short getaway with plenty of ship to explore. She’s not ideal for: people who want quiet, or who resent a crowd on a three-night sailing.

On cleanliness, her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is a perfect 100, from an inspection on 16 February 2026. That was more than seven months ago, so treat it as a strong record rather than a live feed. You can check for updates on our CDC cruise ship inspection lookup, and the full ship profile is on the Norwegian Joy page.

The Itineraries on Offer, and Which to Pick

The full sailing list lives on the Norwegian Joy itineraries page. Our own database has no port lists for this period, so everything below about ports comes from third-party timetables and cruise-listing sites, not from our records. Confirm the routing with Norwegian before you book. Here is how the season breaks down.

The positioning cruises (Pacific to Florida). Our schedule shows a 5-night sailing from Vancouver on 2 October. Third-party timetables describe a Pacific Coast route through Seattle, Astoria and San Francisco to Los Angeles, arriving 7 October. Some listings show it as a 6-night sailing leaving 1 October, so check the dates. Either way it is two days from today and not really a Caribbean product.

Then comes the 16-night voyage from Los Angeles, leaving 7 October and arriving in Miami on 23 October. The listed ports are Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal (Guatemala), Puerto Caldera (Costa Rica), a Panama Canal transit around 17 and 18 October, Cartagena (Colombia) and Ocho Rios (Jamaica). It was listed from $1,139 per person for an interior cabin, taxes and fees included. That is roughly $71 per person per night, which is decent value for a long trip. But it leaves in a week, so it only suits you if your calendar is very flexible.

The themed sailings. Several Miami departures are built around a theme. The Hallmark Christmas Cruise runs 23 to 27 October, sailing Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and back. Third-party timetables also show an UberSoca cruise on 27 October, and three 5-night themed sailings in November:

  • 1 November: Rock The Bells, Miami to Montego Bay (Jamaica) and back.
  • 6 November: Chefs Making Waves, calling at Montego Bay and George Town (Grand Cayman).
  • 11 November: Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise, calling at Falmouth and Ocho Rios (Jamaica).

You can generally book these without being a superfan, but the ship will be full of people who are. If you want a quiet week, look elsewhere.

The everyday Bahamas runs. These are the bread and butter, and the ports below come from the same third-party timetables and listings:

  • 3 nights (20 and 27 November, 11 December on our schedule): Miami, Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay, back to Miami.
  • 4 nights (16, 23 and 30 November, plus further dates through 18 December on our schedule): the same two ports with an extra night for the November sailings. The 16 and 30 November sailings visit Great Stirrup Cay first and Nassau second. On 23 November the order flips.

Which to pick? Choose the 3-night if you are testing whether you like cruising, or you only have a long weekend. Two ports in three nights means no sea day, so the ship is busiest on the days you’re aboard. Choose the 4-night if you want a day to enjoy the ship, because two named ports over four nights leaves room for at least one sea day. Choose a Jamaica-and-Cayman 5-night if you want more of the Caribbean and the theme appeals. Take the 16-night only if you love long itineraries and can leave next week.

The Ports, and What’s Genuinely Worth Doing

Great Stirrup Cay. Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas had a $150 million rebuild, and the headline is a new pier. It opened in August 2026 and lets two large ships dock at once, without tenders. The first double call happened the weekend before 16 September, with Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Getaway. Norwegian has around 30 more double calls scheduled through the end of 2026. Good news for getting ashore quickly. Less good news if you crave empty beaches.

Entry to the island is free for Norwegian guests. That includes the beach, the Great Life Lagoon pool, the Splash Harbor kids’ water play area, and complimentary dining. The Great Tides Waterpark opened in September 2026 and costs extra. It has 19 slides, an 800-foot river and a grotto bar, and Norwegian lists day passes from $89.99 for adults and children alike, with prices varying by sailing and availability. The adults-only (18+) Vibe Shore Club day pass starts at $109.99, and Norwegian says the shore excursion discount doesn’t apply to it. Free options include Horizon Park (pickleball and mini golf) and Hammock Bay, with more than 50 hammocks. My verdict: the free parts are excellent, and the waterpark is worth it if you have kids and stamina.

Nassau. Skip the expensive excursion and walk. Junkanoo Beach is around ten minutes from the port. The Queen’s Staircase and Fort Fincastle are a 10 to 15 minute walk uphill, and the staircase is free. The Straw Market is right by the wharf, and haggling is expected. It’s an easy half day.

The Jamaica and Cayman calls. They only apply to the themed 5-nighters and the 16-night voyage, and I have not verified specific excursions for them. Look at what the theme promises, and decide once the final itinerary is confirmed.

Conditions and Packing for This Season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs through 30 November, with the highest risk from August to October. That means the early autumn sailings carry the most weather risk, and itineraries can be altered. Travel insurance that covers weather disruption is worth a look.

Once you get past the storm risk, autumn is pleasant. Miami’s November highs run from the low 80s °F early in the month to the upper 70s °F by the end. Lows go from the upper 60s °F to the mid-60s °F. The Bahamas typically sees highs around 80°F and lows around 70°F. Sea temperatures sit around 79 to 81°F near Miami.

Pack:

  • Swimwear, plus a cover-up, because ship air-conditioning is a cruel mistress.
  • A light layer or wrap for evenings on deck and late-November breezes.
  • Sun protection. November sun is still real sun.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for Nassau’s hills and steps.
  • A small rain jacket, just in case.
  • Water shoes for the island, if you plan to do the waterpark.

Money: Where the Value Is

The fare is only the start. Norwegian’s daily service charge is $20 per guest per day for standard cabins (interior, oceanview, balcony and Club Balcony Suite) and $25 for The Haven and higher suites. Children under 3 are free, but ages 3 and up pay the full adult rate. Our tipping guide explains who gets what.

Here is a worked example. A dealnews listing for a 3-night Bahamas round trip from Miami on Norwegian Joy was priced “from $658 for 2”, and dealnews says that fare includes taxes, fees and port expenses. That’s $329 per person. The listing doesn’t give a departure date or a cabin category, so treat it as a starting price rather than a quote for any particular sailing, and note that its booking deadline was 30 September 2026, which is today. Add the service charge for two people over three nights ($20 × 3 × 2 = $120) and you’re at $778, before excursions and anything else you buy on board. Cheap on paper, less cheap once you add the extras.

Third-party timetables list inside-cabin starting fares for the November Bahamas sailings between $334 and $479. The timetable says its prices are sampled from the cruise line’s website and may not be up to date, and it doesn’t say what is included, so treat these as a comparison rather than a quote. The pattern is useful, though:

  • 16 November, 4 nights: from $334
  • 20 November, 3 nights: from $359
  • 23 November, 4 nights: from $479
  • 27 November, 3 nights: from $369
  • 30 November, 4 nights: from $349

The 23 November sailing is Thanksgiving week (Thanksgiving is 26 November), and it costs $145 more than the 16 November departure ($479 minus $334). That’s the value lesson: dodge the holiday week.

Extras. The Great Tides Waterpark at a starting price of $89.99 a head means a family of four spends roughly $360 in one day (4 × $89.99 = $359.96). Two adults at the Vibe Shore Club pay $219.98 at the starting price. Prices vary by sailing, so check your own booking. Decide before you sail, because it is easy to spend without noticing.

Free at Sea. Norwegian’s promotion currently lists an unlimited open bar, three specialty dining meals, 150 minutes of Wi-Fi per person and a $50 shore excursion credit at every port. Offers vary by sailing, and drink packages and specialty meals carry their own service charges and gratuities. Read the terms before you count the perk as free. For what the fare covers, see our guide to what’s free and what’s not on board.

Timing: When to Book, and What Sells Out

The obvious pressure points are the holiday sailings. The Hallmark Christmas Cruise on 23 October is a fan event, so cabins there will go to the fans. The Thanksgiving week departure on 23 November is more expensive, as the price gap above shows. The December holiday sailings from Miami (including 22, 26 and 31 December) will likely be the priciest and the busiest. Avoid them if you’re price-sensitive.

The bargain sailings look to be the mid-November departures on either side of Thanksgiving week. They are also the most weather-safe, since hurricane season is nearly over by then. If your dates are flexible, that is the sweet spot.

The 16-night cruise leaves in a week, and the Vancouver positioning sailing leaves in two days. Both are last-minute buys, so consider them only if you already have the flexibility.

FAQ: Your Norwegian Joy Autumn Questions

Is Norwegian Joy a good ship for a Bahamas cruise?

Yes, if you like a lot to do. She carries 3,804 passengers and has go-karts, an Aqua Park, a Thermal Suite and an adults-only beach club. The autumn Bahamas runs visit Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay. She is less suited to travellers who want a small, calm ship.

What is the best month to cruise the Bahamas from Miami?

Late November and December are the mildest, with highs around 80°F and hurricane season ending 30 November. The lowest fares I found were mid-November. The Thanksgiving week and Christmas to New Year sailings are the busiest and priciest, so avoid them if you want the best value.

Is Great Stirrup Cay free for Norwegian passengers?

Getting on the island is free. Beach access, the Great Life Lagoon pool, Splash Harbor and complimentary dining are all included. The Great Tides Waterpark costs extra, with day passes from $89.99 for adults and children, and prices vary by sailing and availability. The adults-only Vibe Shore Club day pass starts at $109.99.

How much are gratuities on Norwegian Cruise Line in 2026?

The daily service charge is $20 per guest per day for standard cabins and $25 for The Haven and higher suites. Children under 3 are free, and children 3 and older pay the full adult rate. For two adults on a 3-night cruise, that is $120 in standard cabins, on top of the fare.

Is it still hurricane season on a November cruise from Miami?

Yes, the Atlantic season officially runs through 30 November. The highest risk is August to October, so November sailings are calmer, but itineraries can still change. Buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, and check the cancellation terms before you pay.

Is Norwegian Joy’s CDC inspection score good?

Her latest Vessel Sanitation Program score is 100 out of 100, from an inspection on 16 February 2026. That is the maximum. It is a snapshot from more than seven months ago, so you can check for any newer inspection on our CDC inspection lookup.

The Bottom Line

Norwegian Joy this autumn is a lively, gadget-packed ship doing short Bahamas hops from Miami. Pick her if you want lots to do and don’t mind crowds. Book a mid-November 3- or 4-night sailing, ideally the week before or after Thanksgiving, for the best mix of weather and price. Budget for the $20 daily service charge and the island extras. Skip the last-minute positioning cruises unless your schedule is truly free. Before you commit, check the confirmed ports for your exact sailing on the itineraries page, since our own port data is missing for this period.
