Sapphire Princess Autumn 2026 in Asia: Is It for You?

Sapphire Princess has an odd autumn. Our database tags her season as “Asia”, but her first departures are in Quebec City, in the middle of leaf-peeping season. She then crosses to Los Angeles by way of the Panama Canal and the Pacific, and only arrives in Tokyo and Singapore as autumn turns into winter. You could take four very different holidays on the same hull, so this guide helps you pick one, or decide to skip her.

The full departure list is on our Sapphire Princess itineraries page. This article covers whether the ship, the region and the season suit you.

Two honesty notes. First, our database has no port lists for these sailings, so every port named below comes from Princess-linked listings and retailer pages. Confirm them before you book. Second, sources count some of these voyages differently. We list 9-night Canada sailings, a 20-night Los Angeles to Tokyo crossing and a 34-night Los Angeles to Singapore one. Some retailers show the same voyages as 10, 19 and 33 nights. Check the length on your own booking.

The Ship’s Character and Who She Suits

Sapphire is a mid-sized, slightly vintage Grand-class ship. At 115,875 tons and 2,678 passengers she has fewer people than the newer megaships, which run to 4,000 and beyond. With 1,100 crew you get about 2.4 guests per crew member. She was built in 2004 by Mitsubishi in Nagasaki, so her Japan season is a homecoming of sorts, and she had a refresh in 2025.

She suits travellers who:

  • Like ports more than the ship. These itineraries are port-heavy. The times on a retailer’s listing of the 42-night Singapore voyage show late-night stays in Hong Kong and Ha Long Bay, plus an overnight at Laem Chabang (for Bangkok). Confirm the times on your own sailing.
  • Want long, unhurried voyages. Most of the Asia menu runs 14, 28 or 42 nights, and that appeals to retirees and sabbatical-havers.
  • Prefer traditional cruising. She has a pleasant pool, dining rooms and a theatre. It’s a classic Princess experience rather than a waterslide-and-rollercoaster one.

She is a poor fit if you want the newest bells and whistles, or if a two-week ocean crossing sounds like a hostage situation. Cabin space is a real consideration on a 42-night trip, so read our cabin size guide before choosing the cheapest interior. For an overview of the vessel, see our Sapphire Princess ship page.

On cleanliness, the latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is 99 out of 100, from the inspection on 2026-07-21. The CDC treats 86 and above as satisfactory. You can look up the inspection report yourself with the CDC inspection lookup.

The Itineraries on Offer, and Which to Pick

Here is the autumn in four chapters.

Chapter 1: Canada and New England (October)

Sapphire arrived in Boston in early September for a run of Canada/New England voyages. The remaining ones are Quebec City to Boston on Oct 4, Boston to Quebec City on Oct 13 and a 14-night Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale voyage on Oct 23. Listed calls include Saguenay, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, Saint John and Portland. Overnights are listed at Charlottetown and Quebec City. The Oct 23 sailing adds Boston, Newport, an overnight in New York and Nassau, according to one retailer. This is the best pick if your idea of exotic is a lobster roll under a maple tree. It isn’t Asia, though.

Chapter 2: Panama Canal (November)

The 16-night Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles voyage departs Nov 6. Listings show Oranjestad, a Panama Canal transit, Fuerte Amador, Puntarenas, Puerto Chiapas, Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta. It’s a great voyage, but it isn’t the Asia voyage you came for.

Chapter 3: The Pacific crossing (from Nov 22)

Two voyages leave Los Angeles on Nov 22. The 20-night version ends in Tokyo, and the 34-night version carries on to Singapore. Retailer listings show Hawaii calls (Kahului on Maui appears on the longer one) before Japan. The longer voyage also lists Okinawa (Naha), Kagoshima and Hong Kong. Our data has no port list, so verify the exact stops. This is the best “Asia without flying” option, and the crossing is what you’re paying for.

Chapter 4: Tokyo and Singapore (from Dec 12 and Dec 26)

Tokyo departs Dec 12 with 14, 28 and 42-night options. Singapore departs Dec 26 with 14, 28 and 42-night options, and the 14- and 28-night ones repeat on Jan 9. The 42-night Singapore voyage is a round trip from Singapore. A retailer’s listing gives this order of calls: Singapore, Laem Chabang (an overnight), Ko Samui, Sihanoukville, Ho Chi Minh City, Penang, Phuket, Langkawi, Port Klang (for Kuala Lumpur), Singapore again on Jan 9, Nha Trang, Cai Lan (for Ha Long Bay, an overnight), Hong Kong, Taipei, Miyake-jima, Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Okinawa, Kaohsiung, Hong Kong again, Chan May, Ho Chi Minh City again and back to Singapore on Feb 6. Only the Dec 12 Tokyo departure counts as autumn, and only by the astronomical calendar, which runs to the solstice around Dec 21. The Dec 26 Singapore departure is a winter sailing by any definition, even if it feels like summer once you land.

Which to pick:

  • First time in Asia: a 14-night Singapore sailing. It is long enough to feel Southeast Asia and short enough to survive.
  • Japan and a cool-weather trip: a Tokyo departure.
  • Bucket-list, unlimited time: the 34- or 42-night voyage.
  • Foliage: the Canada voyages, if you can be in Quebec City within days.

The Ports and What’s Genuinely Worth Doing

I’m going by the port lists in listings, since our data has none.

  • Hong Kong. On the 42-night Singapore sailing, the listing has the ship leaving at 11pm on Jan 16 and 10pm on Jan 31, so take the evening seriously. Ride the Peak, see the Tian Tan Buddha, and eat an evening meal ashore, not the ship’s buffet.
  • Tokyo/Yokohama. The ship docks in Yokohama, roughly 20 miles from central Tokyo, per Princess. You’ll need a train, so plan it and don’t leave it to chance.
  • Ha Long Bay (Cai Lan). The limestone karsts are the postcard. On the 42-night sailing the listing shows the ship arriving at 7am on Jan 13 and leaving at 7am on Jan 14, which gives you a full day and an evening.
  • Bangkok (Laem Chabang). Princess says ships dock at Laem Chabang, approximately 2 hours from Bangkok. The 42-night Singapore listing shows an overnight there, arriving at noon on Dec 28 and leaving at 5pm on Dec 29. With roughly two hours each way, that’s realistically one evening in the city and a short second outing, not a full checklist. Pick one or two highlights, such as a temple and a street-food dinner, and confirm the all-aboard time before you head out on day two.
  • Singapore. Arrive a day early. Hawker centres, Gardens by the Bay and a very tidy airport.
  • Kagoshima, Nagasaki and Naha. These are smaller Japanese calls that many mainstream cruisers never reach. Kagoshima is the one to look forward to if you like volcanoes.

Conditions and Packing for the Season

The conditions across this season are wildly different, so pack for the specific chapter you choose.

  • Canada/New England (October): highs in the low 60s Fahrenheit (around 16°C), with lows in the 40s. Northern ports like Quebec City and Halifax typically peak for foliage in late September to early October, and southern ports like Boston, Portland and Newport peak in early to mid October. Pack layers, a windproof jacket and a rain shell.
  • Tokyo (December): average temperatures of about 8-9°C, crisp, sunny and dry, with sunset around 4:30pm. Bring a proper coat, a scarf and walking shoes.
  • Hong Kong (December): one of its driest months, with cool evenings. Sea temperatures are about 22°C at the start of the month, easing to about 20°C by the end. Bring a sweater and a light jacket.
  • Singapore and Southeast Asia: Royal Caribbean puts the Northeast Monsoon at late October to January, and the Meteorological Service Singapore gives December a mean rainfall of about 332mm (13.1 inches), one of the wettest months of the year. Daytime temperatures are 24 to 32°C. Pack a compact umbrella and quick-drying clothes. Princess notes that October through April is generally the pleasant window for coastal Southeast Asia.

The big lesson is that a 42-night voyage can cross from Singapore heat to Japanese winter. Pack for both, and use the ship’s laundry so you don’t need a month of outfits. Cherry blossom season is late March to early April, so autumn sailings won’t catch it.

Money and Where the Value Is

Cruise fares are quoted per person, based on two sharing a cabin. Prices change constantly and retailers disagree, so treat these as illustrations. Sample figures from one retailer, cruiseweb.com:

  • The 14-night Southeast Asia & Japan cruise from Tokyo (Dec 12 departure), from $1,978 per person. That works out to about $141 per person per night ($1,978 ÷ 14 = $141.29), or $3,956 for two sharing a cabin.
  • The 28-night Japan & Southeast Asia Grand Adventure sailing from Singapore (Dec 26 departure), from $6,183 per person, or about $221 per person per night ($6,183 ÷ 28 = $220.82), which is $12,366 for two. These are different voyages from different ports on different dates, so it isn’t a like-for-like comparison.

The same retailer advertises promotions of up to $500 in free onboard credit. That’s a perk, not a price cut, so don’t confuse it with a saving on the fare.

Where the value really is:

  • The late-night port stays. On the 42-night Singapore voyage, the listed times keep the ship in Hong Kong until 11pm on Jan 16 and 10pm on Jan 31, and in Cai Lan from 7am on Jan 13 to 7am on Jan 14. That’s extra evening time ashore, and it’s already built into the fare.
  • The transpacific crossing. One fare covers Hawaii, Japan and a lot of sea days, so you skip the long-haul flight to Asia.
  • Onboard extras. Budget for tips and drinks. Our tipping guide explains who gets what, and it matters more on a 28-night voyage than a 7-night one.
  • Extras ashore. Trains to Tokyo and Bangkok transfers add up. Compare a ship excursion with doing it yourself.

Timing: When to Book and What Sells Out

Today is Sept 29, so the timing depends on which chapter you want.

  • Canada, Oct 4: five days away, so it’s last-minute territory.
  • Canada, Oct 13: 14 days away, and the best remaining foliage timing.
  • Oct 23 Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale: 24 days out.
  • Nov 22 Los Angeles: 54 days out.
  • Dec 12 Tokyo: 74 days out.
  • Dec 26 Singapore: 88 days out.

I can’t see live inventory, so this is judgement and not data. Holiday-period and long-voyage sailings usually fill first, especially good balcony cabins. Ask about any payment deadline that may be near for the Dec 12 and Dec 26 departures. Late-booking bargains are possible, but don’t count on them for 42-night voyages.

One more timing factor: a retailer article says Sapphire moves to year-round Pacific sailing from 2027, which suggests this may be her last Canada/New England season for now. If leaf-peeping is on your list, that’s a reason not to wait.

FAQ: Sapphire Princess Autumn Asia Cruises

Is Sapphire Princess good for a Japan cruise?

Yes, especially if you like port-heavy voyages. She was built in Nagasaki, sails from Tokyo (Yokohama) on 14, 28 and 42-night options from Dec 12, and the 42-night Singapore listing includes Tokyo, Nagasaki and Kagoshima. It’s a mid-sized, traditional ship. If you want a modern megaship with lots of thrill rides, look elsewhere.

What is the weather like on an Asia cruise in December?

It depends on the stop. Tokyo averages about 8-9°C, sunny and dry. Hong Kong is cool and among its driest months. Singapore is warm, 24-32°C, and December averages about 332mm of rain, according to the Meteorological Service Singapore. Pack layers and a coat for Japan, plus a compact umbrella and light clothes for Southeast Asia.

How clean is Sapphire Princess? What is her CDC score?

Her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is 99 out of 100, from the inspection on 2026-07-21. The CDC treats 86 or higher as satisfactory. You can read the report itself through our CDC inspection lookup, and it’s worth checking again before you sail, since scores change with each inspection.

How long is the Los Angeles to Tokyo cruise on Sapphire Princess?

It departs Nov 22 and is listed as 20 nights in our schedule. Some retailers show it as 19 nights, so check your booking. It calls at Hawaii before reaching Japan. A 34-night sister voyage on the same date continues to Singapore, which some sites list as 33 nights.

Is fall a good time for a Canada and New England cruise?

Yes, that’s the peak time for foliage. Northern ports like Quebec City and Halifax usually peak from late September to early October, and Boston, Portland and Newport in early to mid October. Expect highs in the low 60s Fahrenheit (about 16°C) and cool nights. Sapphire’s remaining Canada sailings depart on Oct 4, Oct 13 and Oct 23.

When should I book Sapphire Princess for December 2026?

Soon. Today is Sept 29, so the Dec 12 Tokyo departure is 74 days away and the Dec 26 Singapore departure is 88 days away. Holiday and long sailings tend to fill early, particularly balcony cabins. Ask your agent or Princess about deadlines, and compare the per-person fare with any onboard credit offered.

The Bottom Line

Book Sapphire Princess if you want a port-focused trip on a mid-sized ship and you’re happy to spend two to six weeks doing it. The 14-night Singapore sailings are the easy way into Southeast Asia. Tokyo departures suit Japan lovers who don’t mind a coat. The Los Angeles crossings suit people who want the journey to Asia to be part of the holiday. If you’re chasing autumn colour, the Canada dates in October are your window, but not much of it is left. Skip her if you want a brand-new ship or if you get restless at sea.
