What Carnival Panorama's Autumn Mexican Riviera Season Is Actually Like
Short version: Panorama spends the fall playing two very different characters. One is a quick Baja hop with a long Cabo stay. The other is a proper Mexican Riviera run with four ports. They differ in length, ports, sea days and departure day, so pick on purpose instead of grabbing whichever one fits your calendar and hoping for the best. Both leave from the Long Beach terminal, even though they're sold as "Los Angeles" (geography is apparently a suggestion).
The two sailings, side by side
| 6 nights | 8 nights | |
|---|---|---|
| Departs | Sundays every other week: Oct 18, 2026 to Jan 10, 2027 (7 sailings) | Saturdays every other week: Oct 24, 2026 to Jan 16, 2027 (7 sailings) |
| Ports | Cabo San Lucas (two days), Ensenada | Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, La Paz, Cabo San Lucas |
| Sea days | Two | Three |
Carnival's own itineraries back up both columns. The 6-night goes Long Beach, a sea day, Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas again, a sea day, Ensenada, home. The 8-night goes Long Beach, two sea days, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, a sea day, home. Carnival does shuffle things, though. It has changed Cabo San Lucas hours on the Oct 18, Nov 1 and Nov 15 6-nights and on the Oct 24 and Nov 7 8-nights. It has also pushed the Oct 18, Nov 1 and Nov 15 departures from Long Beach to 5 p.m. from 4 p.m. and moved the Oct 24 and Nov 7 return to 10 a.m. So check your exact date before you build excursion plans. Port times below come from Carnival's published itineraries.
Weather and sea conditions
The eastern Pacific hurricane season officially runs May 15 to November 30. NHC notes that most storms form between late June and early October, so activity tapers through the autumn. The October and early-November departures sit in that tail, so a rerouted port is possible, even if it isn't likely. Itineraries can change for weather.
The bigger story is the water. November sea temperatures over the last three years averaged about 79–82°F in Cabo, 81–85°F in Puerto Vallarta, and 78–83°F in Mazatlán. Ensenada ran only about 61–63°F. So Ensenada is for tacos and a windbreaker, not for swimming. Daytime air in the southern ports is generally warm, with sources putting Cabo in roughly the mid-70s to low 80s°F in November. Evenings can feel cooler, especially on deck at sea, where you'll be clutching a drink and wondering why you left the hoodie in the cabin.
What the ports are really worth
- Cabo San Lucas: Big ships typically anchor offshore and tender passengers in, so expect a boat queue. The 6-night gives you two Cabo days, which is the whole point of that cruise. Carnival adjusted the Cabo hours on the Oct 18, Nov 1 and Nov 15 sailings, so look up yours rather than trusting a blog (even this one). The 8-night call is the short one: Carnival lists 6:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., and the Oct 24 and Nov 7 sailings have tweaked Cabo times.
- Ensenada: Carnival's 6-night itinerary has the ship in port 8 a.m.–5 p.m. It's a classic one-day Baja stop for food, wine country and the blowhole, but not much for beach time.
- Puerto Vallarta: Carnival lists 9 a.m.–9 p.m. on the 8-night, the longest call of the week. That leaves time for a beach day plus a dinner ashore, which is the correct way to do a port.
- Mazatlán and La Paz: Mazatlán runs 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. and La Paz 9 a.m.–6 p.m. They're less touristy than Cabo, and La Paz is the calm-water, sea-lion-and-snorkel option.
Which length suits whom
The 6-night suits first-timers, short-break cruisers, and anyone who wants to test whether they like cruising before committing a week. The 8-night suits people who want variety and warm-water ports, and it has three sea days for sitting on a lounger and doing nothing. Prices differ by sailing date, so compare both on Carnival.com for the weeks you're eyeing.
Holiday crowding
Calendar quirks matter here. The Oct 24 8-night is back on Nov 1, so Halloween is onboard. The Nov 21 8-night returns Nov 29, and Thanksgiving (Nov 26) is day 6, which on Carnival's published 8-night itinerary is La Paz, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. So your turkey day is in port, not at sea, and the calm-water snorkel crowd gets a head start on the food coma. Port order can shift, so confirm on your booking. The Dec 19 8-night returns Dec 27, so Christmas is onboard. The Dec 27 6-night returns Jan 2, so New Year's Day is onboard. Expect more families on those departures, and quieter sailings in the weeks around them.
What to pack
- Swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen for Cabo, La Paz, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.
- A light jacket or layer for Ensenada, sea days and evenings on deck.
- Sturdy sandals or water shoes for tender boats and wet docks.
- Motion-sickness remedies, just in case the Pacific swell has opinions.
