It’s October 15, hurricane season technically has until November 30 to misbehave, and Carnival Breeze has a tidy autumn plan. She shuttles Texans and assorted sun-seekers between Galveston and Mexico’s Yucatán coast on short sailings. There are no flights if you live nearby and no week-long commitment. You get a long weekend with a waterslide. Is that your kind of party? Let’s find out.

The Ship’s Character, and Who Should Book It
The Breeze is big, bright and unapologetically a party. Her headliners are a 320-foot Twister waterslide at WaterWorks, plus Guy’s Burger Joint and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que. There’s also Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi, BlueIguana Cantina, a comedy club and Liquid Nightclub. For escape, there’s the Serenity adults-only retreat and the Cloud 9 Spa. You will need Serenity once the slide screaming gets to you.
It suits:
- Texans who can drive to the port.
- First-timers finding out whether they even like cruising.
- Families (Camp Ocean runs the kids’ programme).
- Multigenerational groups who need something for everyone.
It doesn’t suit: anyone chasing a boutique, hush-hush or brand-new ship. She’s a 2012 build with 3,690 guests, so expect crowds at the pool and a buffet queue with opinions.
Now the elephant in the buffet line. Her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is 86 out of 100. A score of 86 or higher passes, and 85 or below is unsatisfactory. So she passed, by the narrowest margin there is. Reporting in August said she had scored 100 in January, so the May result was a drop. An inspection is a snapshot, not a forecast of your trip. You can read the detail yourself in our CDC inspection lookup, and the full ship profile is on the Carnival Breeze page.
The Itineraries on Offer, and Which to Pick
There are two flavours this autumn. The full dates live on our Carnival Breeze itineraries page. Here’s the shape of it:
- 4 nights: five departures, every other Thursday. They are October 15, October 29, November 12, November 26 and December 10. Yes, the first one leaves today, so unless you’re already packed, move along.
- 5 nights: nine departures from October 19 to December 14, alternating Monday and Saturday starts.
The 5-night route is well documented. Third-party listings, including a November 30 sailing, show this pattern:
- Galveston at 3:30 p.m.
- A sea day.
- Cozumel, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Progreso, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Another sea day.
- Back in Galveston at 8 a.m.
Our port tags also mention Riviera Maya. The listings I checked show only Cozumel and Progreso, so don’t book hoping for Playa del Carmen without checking.
For the 4-night sailings, our data has dates but no ports, and I won’t make some up. Listings for other 4-night Breeze departures, including a May 14 sailing, show Galveston, a sea day, Cozumel from 9 to 5, another sea day, then home at 8 a.m. That is the likely pattern here. I found no listings for October 29 or November 12, so confirm with Carnival before you book.
My pick: take the 5-night if you can spare the day. You get two ports and Mérida access. Take the 4-night if you only have a long weekend or you’re testing the cruise waters. Be warned that it’s two sea days wrapped around one port, so it’s more ship than Mexico.
The Ports: What’s Genuinely Worth Your Time
Cozumel
You have roughly eight hours, so choose one plan and commit.
- Beach club: Mr. Sancho’s is the cruiser favourite. One guide quotes about $80 per person for all-inclusive access, and another puts the taxi at $6 to $10. Both figures may be dated.
- Culture: Punta Sur has the El Caracol ruins, a lighthouse and the island’s biggest nature reserve. San Gervasio is about 30 minutes by car.
- Cheap: public beaches such as Playa Caletita and Chen Rio are free, but bring cash for food.
- In between: Chankanaab park, about $30 admission per one source, is 5 to 10 minutes from the ships.
Check which pier you’re on before booking transport.
Progreso
Progreso’s pier is famously long. Guinness World Records certifies it at 8,018.98 metres, roughly 8 kilometres or 5 miles, while older figures from NASA Earth Observatory and CruiseMapper put it at 6.5 kilometres. A free shuttle takes about 15 minutes to reach downtown. The last one back leaves an hour before sailing. The market where it drops you isn’t the genuine local one. The real prize is Mérida, about 20 miles away. Taxis there were quoted at around $30 in one older guide. Chichén Itzá is roughly two hours each way, which on a 9-to-5 port day is a stretch. If you want it, use a ship excursion so the boat waits for you. Otherwise, take Mérida and a long lunch.
Conditions and Packing for Autumn
Hurricane season runs through November 30, so be honest with yourself about that. NOAA’s August 6 update called for a below-normal season, with 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes and 0 to 2 major ones. It put the odds of a below-normal season at 75%, citing El Niño. That’s reassuring but not a guarantee. With only two ports, a storm can rejig your itinerary, so buy travel insurance and watch the National Hurricane Center.
Expect Galveston in the 70s, and Cozumel around the mid-80s with showers possible. Pack:
- Light layers, because December sail-aways can be breezy.
- A packable rain jacket.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.
- Water shoes for rocky beaches.
- Cash in small bills for taxis and tips.
Ship air-conditioning is aggressive, so bring a cardigan for dinner.
Money: Where the Value Is
Here’s a snapshot for the November 30, 5-night sailing. Fares are per person, double occupancy, taxes and fees included:
- Interior: $436
- Oceanview: $456
- Balcony: $556
- Suite: $1,226
For two people sharing, that’s $872 for an interior and $1,112 for a balcony. The balcony upgrade costs $120 per person, or $240 per cabin. Interior works out to about $87 per person per night.
What the fare doesn’t include:
- Gratuities: Carnival raised its daily rate on April 2, 2026, to $17 per person per day for standard cabins and $19 for suites. Over five days that’s about $85 per person, or $170 for two. Over four days it’s about $68 per person, or $136 for two. Our tipping guide covers extras.
- The Mexico fee: the cruise passenger fee doubled to $10 per person on August 1, 2026. It rises to $15 on July 1, 2027 and $21 on August 1, 2028. It’s charged once per itinerary and sits in the taxes-and-fees line, so check that line on your quote.
- Parking: Cruzely’s Galveston parking guide quotes $151 for a 5-day cruise at the Express Lot at Terminal 28 and $172 at the covered garage, both with taxes and fees included. Rates vary by lot, trip length and season, and off-port lots can be cheaper, so confirm the current price on the Port of Galveston’s cruise parking reservations page.
An interior for two comes to $872 plus $170 in gratuities, which is $1,042 before drinks, Wi-Fi, excursions and parking.
The real value tip is to avoid Thanksgiving week. One tracker showed the November 21 5-night, which returns on Thanksgiving Day, from $748 per person. That’s $312 more than the November 30 sailing. A reseller listed the November 26 4-night, which departs on Thanksgiving Day, from $670. That’s $234 more than the November 30 5-night, for a night less. These figures come from different sites on different days, so treat them as indications rather than a like-for-like comparison.
Timing: When to Book, and What Sells Out
Thanksgiving week is the crunch. The November 21 and November 26 sailings straddle the holiday, and holiday dates sell first. If your dates are flexible, the post-holiday November 30 departure looks the best value of those I checked. The earlier 4-night listing also showed suites sold out on the October 15 sailing, so suite seekers should book early.
Two practical points for Galveston. Harborside Drive has had roadwork and lane closures this year, so check conditions on embarkation day and arrive at your assigned time. The Breeze has also switched terminals before. In October 2025, guests parked at Terminal 28 but boarded at Terminal 10. Confirm your terminal before you leave home.
FAQ: Carnival Breeze Autumn Cruises
Is Carnival Breeze good for a first cruise?
Yes, especially from Galveston. It’s a big, lively ship with a waterslide, Guy Fieri food and plenty to do on sea days. The 4-night sailing is a low-commitment test, and the 5-night gives you two ports. It isn’t quiet or new. If your first cruise is meant to be serene, pick a smaller ship.
What ports does Carnival Breeze visit from Galveston this fall?
The 5-night sailings visit Cozumel and Progreso, each from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For the 4-night sailings our data has no ports. Similar 4-night listings show a single Cozumel call between two sea days, so that’s likely. Confirm the exact itinerary with Carnival before you book.
Is it safe to cruise from Galveston during hurricane season?
Hurricane season runs through November 30, but NOAA’s August update expected a below-normal year. Risk isn’t zero, and itineraries can change for weather. Buy travel insurance, watch the National Hurricane Center in the days before sailing, and keep flexible plans if you’re flying in to Galveston.
How much does a 5-night Carnival Breeze cruise cost?
A November 30 snapshot showed $436 per person for an interior and $556 for a balcony, taxes and fees included. Add gratuities of $17 per person per day, about $85 per person over five days. Drinks, Wi-Fi, excursions and parking cost extra. Thanksgiving-week sailings were noticeably pricier in the listings I checked.
Is Carnival Breeze’s CDC score good?
It passes, narrowly. The Breeze scored 86 out of 100 on May 14, 2026. A score of 86 or higher is passing, and 85 or below is unsatisfactory. Reporting said she scored 100 in January. Look at the inspection details on our CDC lookup page rather than leaning on the number alone.
Is Progreso worth getting off the ship?
Yes, if you use it as a gateway. The town is a modest beach stop, and the free shuttle takes about 15 minutes to reach downtown. Mérida, about 20 miles away, is the real draw. Chichén Itzá is a roughly two-hour drive each way, so book a ship excursion if you want it.
The Bottom Line
Carnival Breeze this autumn is a good bet if you want a short, affordable, party-friendly escape from Galveston, and the 5-night sailings give you two ports instead of one. Take that route for Cozumel and Mérida. Choose the 4-night if a long weekend is all you’ve got, but expect more ship than shore. Dodge Thanksgiving week for better fares, buy travel insurance for the hurricane tail, and read her 86 CDC score as a pass, not a rave. It’s a fun ship with a narrow margin on one report card.
