Norwegian Joy leaves Miami on Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 for four nights, so the year’s last toast and the new year’s first headache will happen on the same ship. If the 4:00 PM departure holds (that time comes from third-party listings, not NCL), you’ll ring in 2027 on open water with about 3,800 of your closest strangers (and, yes, the crew, who will be working while you toast). Joy is a 2017-built, 167,725-ton Breakaway Plus ship that got a 2024 refit, and she’s due back in Miami on Monday, Jan 4. One caveat up front: our database has no port list for this sailing, so every port detail below comes from third-party listings and needs checking against NCL.
Start Here
- Today (Oct 12, 80 days out): check your booking or ncl.com for the confirmed port list and times before you buy any excursions.
- This week: book specialty dining, spa slots and excursions in the NCL app or My NCL, because the booking window is already open.
- Nov 16: the accessibility medical questionnaire window closes (45 days out), if you need it.
- Dec 10: online check-in opens (21 days out). Pick your pier arrival time then.
- Dec 27: finish check-in, which is NCL’s recommended 4-day mark. It is also the last day to buy transfers.

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite
You’re 80 days out and the dining window is already open, so stop procrastinating. NCL’s own preparation page gives two booking windows (about 90–120 days and about 60–90 days), which is NCL arguing with itself, but under either figure the window has already opened. Specialty dining is booked in the NCL app or My NCL.
| Date | What happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Now | Book specialty dining, spa, excursions | The sailing is a holiday departure, so expect demand (our inference) |
| Nov 16 | Accessibility medical questionnaire closes | Window is 45–90 days before sailing |
| Dec 10 | Online check-in opens | 21 days before sailing; you choose a pier arrival slot |
| Dec 27 | Finish check-in; last day to buy transfers | NCL’s US boarding FAQ says 4 days; its Canadian page says 3 (Dec 28). Use the earlier date. |
| Dec 30 | Reserve Garage B parking (by midnight); prepay service charge (up to 24 hours before sailing) | Service charge prepay goes through a travel professional |
Finish check-in early, because late check-in risks extended processing or denied boarding. That is a very sad way to meet a New Year’s Eve. Once everyone on the booking has checked in, you get a link to download your eDocs. The arrival slot you pick is not your boarding time, so don’t treat it like a dinner reservation.
Latitudes members get priority check-in at the pier, per NCL. Whether your tier changes when the online window opens isn’t confirmed, so don’t count on an early start. Platinum’s two free dinners apply only to voyages of 5 nights or longer, so this one doesn’t qualify (per The Points Guy). Rude, but true.
Embarkation Logistics
Plan to be aboard by about 2:00 PM, even though one NCL page says 3:00 PM would do. The two NCL pages disagree, so pick the safer one. Don’t rely on the 4:00 PM departure either, because it comes only from third-party listings.
Timing rules
- NCL’s US boarding FAQ: with Online Check-In done, arrive at least 1 hour before your scheduled embarkation time. Without it, arrive at least 2 hours before.
- Same FAQ: you must be checked in and aboard 1 hour before departure or you can’t sail.
- NCL’s Canadian preparation page: arrive no more than 1 hour before the embarkation time in your eDocs, and be aboard at least 2 hours before departure.
- On a 4:00 PM departure, that’s 3:00 PM (US page) or 2:00 PM (Canadian page).
- Group-travel pages for Miami say the terminal usually opens between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM, boarding won’t start before about 11:30 AM, and you must be inside the terminal doors by 3:00 PM ET. Those are secondary sources.
Your eDocs are the final word. On a New Year’s Eve departure, nobody wins by being the person sprinting down the pier with a carry-on and a prayer.
Terminal
Norwegian’s dedicated terminal at PortMiami is Terminal B, with Garage B beside it. Which terminal Joy uses on this date isn’t confirmed, so let your documents decide rather than your gut. The port address is 1015 N America Way, Miami, FL 33132.
Parking (per vehicle)
| Option | Per night | 4 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Garage B, unreserved | $35 | $140 |
| Garage B, reserved | $38.50 ($35 + $3.50 fee) | $154, plus 3% card fee |
| Garages C, D, F, G, Surface Lot E | $28 | $112 |
- Reservations are optional, subject to availability, and must be made by midnight the day before embarkation (Dec 30).
- Garage B takes cash and major credit cards, not debit cards.
- The cheaper garages serve other terminals, so expect a longer walk or a free shuttle. Shuttles run on cruise days only.
- The garage rates are the county’s published figures, and the reservation fee comes from Cruise Hive’s report. A Dec 31 rate and whether the garage bills 4 days or 5 are not confirmed, so check the billing before you assume the totals above.
Getting from the airport
MIA to the port is roughly 8–10 miles and 15–25 minutes, but New Year’s Eve surge pricing is the wildcard. These costs come from secondary sources, and there is no official fare table.
| Option | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Uber/Lyft | $20–$35 per ride |
| Taxi | $30–$40 per ride |
| Cruise-line transfer | $20–$30 per person (one source’s estimate) |
The ride is priced per car and the transfer per person, so the more people in your party, the better the car looks. Check the app for a live price before you commit.
The night before
Downtown Miami hotels (InterContinental, JW Marriott Marquis, Hotel Beaux Arts) are about 5–10 minutes from the port. Kimpton EPIC is about 13 minutes and Four Seasons Brickell about 10, while Beach hotels run 20–35 minutes. InterContinental has a Stay & Cruise package with breakfast for two, and transfers aren’t included. Room rates aren’t available yet, but Dec 30 should be pricey and tight, which is our inference, so check live rates.
The Ship and How to Work It
Joy’s strengths after the 2024 Rotterdam refit are the adults-only zones, the over-the-top deck attractions and a dining lineup that’s part free, part not. NCL’s page lists 3,776 guests at double occupancy while our data says 3,804, so call it about 3,800. Cruisemapper’s refit coverage counts “16 complimentary and specialty restaurants” and 21 bars and lounges, which is a lot of places to be disappointed by a cover charge.
Dining
- Complimentary: the Manhattan Room (main dining room, with a dance floor and bandstand) and Garden Café (the buffet).
- Extra charge: Cagney’s Steakhouse, Le Bistro (French), La Cucina (Italian) and Teppanyaki, which seats few guests at once, so reserve.
- Also named by third parties: Food Republic (tapas-style, Asian-leaning), Q Texas Smokehouse and Ocean Blue.
- Bars: Horizon Lounge (outdoor), Sugarcane (mojitos) and the Cavern Club.
NCL’s “Freestyle” model means no fixed dining times or assigned seating, though that detail dates from the 2017 launch coverage. Current cover charges and menu prices aren’t confirmed, so ask NCL before budgeting. Which launch-era venues survived the refit isn’t confirmed either, so don’t fall in love with a menu just yet.
Adults-only
- Vibe Beach Club: adults-only and expanded in 2024, on Deck 20 where the Laser Tag arena used to be. It has private luxe cabanas, and cabana and access pricing aren’t established.
- Thermal Suite: inside Mandara Spa and new in 2024, with a sauna, steam room, ice room and four sense loungers. It’s usually a paid pass, and the price isn’t verified.
Families
These are NCL’s fleet-wide rules, not Joy-specific. Splash Academy is for ages 3–12, and children must be fully potty-trained (NCL means it). Entourage is for teens aged 13–17, and Guppies is a free parent-and-child session for ages 6 months–3 years. Splash Academy and Entourage are complimentary, and ages are based on age at sailing. Each child aged 3–17 needs a one-time digital registration form. The Late Night Fun Zone (ages 3–12) is paid, but NCL pages conflict on the rate, so we won’t quote one.
Deck attractions and shows
- Aqua Park with the Ocean Loop, a double-loop waterslide that runs over the side of the ship. Yes, over the side.
- Norwegian Joy Speedway, a two-level race track. A 2024 reviewer reported booking hiccups and suggested timed tickets.
- Mini-golf and a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade.
- Laser Tag and Galaxy Pavilion VR are gone (pour one out), replaced by Vibe and the Thermal Suite.
- Shows named: ELEMENTS!, Deal or No Deal and Footloose. Reviewers say theater seats fill up, and one advised arriving 30+ minutes early.
New Year’s Eve programming for this sailing isn’t confirmed, and we won’t invent a party for you. Check the daily planner and the NCL app once you’re booked. For the sanitation record, see the CDC inspection lookup.
The Ports
Third-party listings show Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, but treat both as unconfirmed until NCL says so. Sellers even disagree on port order for other dates. The listed hours below look like generic placeholders, and the all-aboard time isn’t listed. It’s usually 30 to 60 minutes before departure, so confirm it with NCL.
| Date | Stop (per listings) | Listed times |
|---|---|---|
| Thu, Dec 31 | Miami | Departs 4:00 PM |
| Fri, Jan 1 | At sea | – |
| Sat, Jan 2 | Nassau, Bahamas | 7:00 AM–5:00 PM |
| Sun, Jan 3 | Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas | 7:00 AM–5:00 PM |
| Mon, Jan 4 | Miami | Arrives 7:00 AM |
Our Norwegian Joy itineraries page has more routes. Listings put New Year’s Day at sea, which would make it a nice recovery day, but that’s another detail to confirm with NCL.
Nassau
The ship docks at Prince George Wharf in downtown Nassau, so the main sights are walkable. Blogs put Bay Street and the Straw Market about 5 minutes away and Junkanoo Beach 10–15 minutes west. The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and USD is accepted everywhere, per a port-guide roundup.
- Taxis: blog fares conflict and there’s no official 2026 tariff we can point to, so ask for the regulated rate before you get in.
- Excursions: one listing names Seahorse Sail & Snorkel and Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day. Current prices aren’t available yet.
- Tipping: many restaurants add a service charge of about 15%, so check the bill first. Blog guidance is 10–20% where none is added, and 10–15% for taxis. These are weak sources.
- Safety: the State Department advisory is Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), and OSAC reports it was renewed on Jul 28, 2026 with no change to the level. The specifics here come from the March 2025 version of the advisory text: it flags the “Over the Hill” area south of Shirley Street and says sexual assaults have occurred on and near downtown Nassau beaches. Check travel.state.gov for the current wording.
- Jet skis: in June 2026 the US Embassy warned Americans against renting them, naming Cabbage, Junkanoo and Saunders beaches and solicitors near the cruise port.
Skip independent jet-ski operators and don’t wander south of Shirley Street. No souvenir is worth it.
Great Stirrup Cay
NCL’s private island has a new deep-water pier, but weather decides whether you get there. Reports suggest tendering is over, though the exact pier opening date is unconfirmed. Great Tides Waterpark was scheduled to open Sep 4, 2026 with 19 slides, an 800+ ft lazy river and a 170-ft Tidal Tower, plus the 9,000 sq ft Splash Cay kids’ zone. Yes, it is as much of a flex as it sounds.
- Waterpark: it’s a paid day pass sold through myNCL, and the price varies by season. NCL’s excursion page has listed adults from $79.99, but check your date.
- Free: beaches, chairs and the Great Life Lagoon pool complex.
- Paid: Vibe Shore Club (adults-only) and private cabanas for up to six, which include waterpark admission. Prices for either aren’t published in what we’ve seen.
- Drinks: reports conflict on whether packages work on the island. Confirm with NCL before buying a package for island day.
Conditions and Packing for This Season
Hurricane season ends Nov 30, about a month before you sail, so the real risk in late December is a cold front, not a tropical storm. Tropical storm risk is very low but not literally zero, and there’s no December-specific statistic to quote. A front can bring strong north winds: one cruising blog says fronts cross the area roughly every 5–7 days.
Wind can and does wreck private-island plans. On Jan 24, 2025, gusts of nearly 40 mph kept Icon of the Seas from reaching CocoCay, and Norwegian Epic got stood up by Great Stirrup Cay, the very island on this itinerary, in the same weather event, with the Bahamas Met Office issuing a gale watch. How often Norwegian skips the island in late December or early January isn’t known, so don’t count on the call. Our read, not a measured statistic: this is usually a smooth short run, but a front can make it lively.
| Place | Highs | Lows |
|---|---|---|
| Miami, December | roughly 73–77°F | roughly 62–64°F |
| Nassau, January | roughly 72–77°F | roughly 64–68°F |
Those are approximate figures from low-quality sources, not NOAA normals. Nassau-area sea temperature in January is about 70–72°F, which is cool for swimming.
- Light layers and a light jacket or wrap for windy decks.
- A swimsuit, though the water is cool.
- Sun protection, because Bahamas sun is strong in winter.
- A rain shell for brief showers and non-slip shoes.
- One dressier outfit for New Year’s Eve. Norwegian is “Freestyle” with no formal dress code, but NYE-specific dress guidance isn’t confirmed.
Money
The base fare doesn’t cover the daily service charge, so budget for it. NCL’s rate is per person, per day, for guests aged 3 and older, on bookings made on or after Jan 1, 2023.
| Cabin type | Per person per day | 4 nights, per person | 4 nights, 2 adults |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club Balcony Suite and below | $20 | $80 | $160 |
| The Haven and Suites | $25 | $100 | $200 |
Those totals are our arithmetic, assuming the charge applies to all 4 nights, so confirm the final amount on your booking. See our tipping guide for how the rest of the tipping works. Butler, concierge, youth staff and beverage service staff aren’t covered by the service charge, per NCL.
Free at Sea and extras
- Free at Sea Plus: from $49.99 per person per day, which is a price, not a saving. Over 4 nights that’s about $200 per person ($199.96), or about $400 for a pair.
- Drink package gratuity: for 2–5 night sailings on prepaid Free at Sea packages, $32 per person per day (up from $28.50). That’s $128 per person over 4 nights. It’s separate from the $20 or $25 service charge, because of course it is.
- Wi-Fi (third-party figures): $29.99 per day for one device, $39.99 for streaming, and +$14.99 per extra device. One device on the basic pass is about $120 for 4 nights ($119.96).
- Which promotion you have: Cruise Critic says “More at Sea” replaced Free at Sea in 2025, and that conflict is unresolved. Check your booking confirmation.
Confirmed 2026 specialty restaurant prices aren’t available, so ask NCL for current menus. A third-party report mentions a $10 no-show fee for specialty reservations, which isn’t verified on NCL’s site, so don’t treat it as gospel.
Wine and corkage
NCL allows sealed or corked wine for guests 21+, screened at the terminal. Corkage is $15 per 750 ml bottle and $30 per 1,500 ml magnum if opened in a restaurant, public area or stateroom. Beverage-package holders pay no corkage, and box wine is not allowed. Liquor, beer, water, soda and juice can’t come aboard. Full details are in our bring-alcohol guide.
Documents
On a round trip from Miami with no Panama Canal, Colombia or Panama calls, a US citizen’s passport alone works. That depends on the ports being the closed-loop ones listed above. NCL still strongly recommends a passport. The Points Guy’s practical take is that a passport is what you need to fly home if you have to leave the ship early abroad.
- No passport? Bring proof of citizenship plus a government photo ID. Accepted proof includes a state-certified birth certificate, naturalization or citizenship certificate, consular report of birth abroad, enhanced driver’s license, or passport card.
- Not accepted: photocopies or pictures, baptismal papers, hospital birth certificates, and Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before 7/1/10.
- US kids under 16: no photo ID on closed-loop sailings, but they need proof of citizenship or a passport.
- Minors with a non-parent adult: a parental consent form at the pier, and NCL’s terms say an original, notarized letter. That wording appears on the Canadian FAQ, so confirm the US requirement.
- Under 21: must share a cabin, or an adjoining one, with a guest aged 21 or over.
- Non-US citizens: a valid passport not expiring within six months of the return date. Green card holders need the card plus a valid passport from their country of citizenship. Some nationalities may need a Bahamian visa, and the line can refuse boarding without it.
Medication and the prohibited list
- Bring enough medication for the whole voyage plus 10 extra days, in original containers in your hand luggage, with prescriptions for narcotics.
- A personal cooler for temperature-sensitive medicine is allowed up to 12″ x 12″ x 12″. Meclizine is sold on board.
- Guests who will be 24 weeks pregnant or more when the cruise ends cannot sail.
- Banned and confiscated: cannabis, CBD, THC and medical marijuana, drones, clothing irons, candles, hoverboards and scooters, walkie-talkies, laser pointers, and knives with blades over 4 in (10.16 cm).
Power strips, extension cords, vapes and smoking aren’t addressed in the NCL pages we read, so ask NCL directly before you pack the surge protector.
FAQ: Your Dec 31 Norwegian Joy Questions
Where does Norwegian Joy go on its Dec 31, 2026 cruise?
Third-party listings show Miami, a sea day on Jan 1, Nassau on Jan 2, Great Stirrup Cay on Jan 3, and a return to Miami on Jan 4. Our database has no port list, and NCL hasn’t confirmed it on its own site. Check your booking’s day-by-day or ncl.com before buying excursions.
What time do I need to be at PortMiami for the New Year’s Eve sailing?
Follow the arrival slot in your eDocs. NCL’s US FAQ says be checked in and aboard 1 hour before departure, while its Canadian page says 2 hours. With a 4:00 PM departure (unconfirmed), that’s 3:00 PM or 2:00 PM, so aim for the earlier one.
Do I need a passport for a 4-night cruise from Miami on Norwegian Joy?
US citizens on a closed-loop sailing can board with a valid passport alone. Without one, bring proof of citizenship, such as a state-certified birth certificate, plus a government photo ID. Photocopies aren’t accepted. NCL strongly recommends a passport anyway, and non-US citizens need one valid six months past the return date.
Can I bring wine on Norwegian Joy?
Yes, if you’re 21 or older. Sealed or corked wine is screened at the terminal. Opening it in a restaurant, public area or stateroom costs $15 for a 750 ml bottle or $30 for a 1,500 ml magnum. Beverage-package holders pay no corkage. Box wine, liquor, beer, water, soda and juice are not allowed.
How much will gratuities cost on a 4-night Norwegian Joy cruise?
The service charge is $20 per person per day in Club Balcony Suite and below, and $25 in The Haven and Suites, for guests 3 and older. Over 4 nights that’s $80 or $100 per person, or $160 or $200 for two adults in one cabin. If your fare includes the Free at Sea drink package, its prepaid gratuity is a separate $32 per person per day.
Will there be a New Year’s Eve party on Norwegian Joy?
NYE programming for this sailing isn’t confirmed, so don’t assume a specific party. The ship should be at sea at midnight if the 4:00 PM departure holds. Once you’re booked, check the NCL app and the daily planner for events, and book any specialty dinner early.
How much is parking at PortMiami for a 4-night cruise?
Unreserved Garage B parking is $35 per night, so $140 for 4 nights. A reserved space is $35 plus a $3.50 per-night fee ($154 for 4 nights) plus a 3% card fee. Garages C, D, F, G and Surface Lot E are $28 per day ($112), but farther from Norwegian’s terminal. Dec 31 rates aren’t confirmed.
The Bottom Line
This is a short, festive Bahamas run on a 2024-refreshed ship, and the main job is pinning down the details nobody has nailed yet. Verify the ports, departure time and terminal on NCL’s own pages. Then lock in dining, finish check-in by Dec 27, and budget for the $20 or $25 daily service charge. Pack layers for a possible cold front, and treat Great Stirrup Cay as a bonus rather than a promise. Do all that, and the only drama on New Year’s Eve will be the kind you ordered.
