What Viking Venus's Spring-into-Summer Australia / New Zealand Season Is Actually Like
Our database files this stretch under "autumn." That's the Northern Hemisphere talking, and frankly it needs to sit down. Down under, Viking Venus's run from late October through February is spring sliding into summer. Pack accordingly, and don't let your brain's calendar boss you around.
Our data doesn't record ports of call for these sailings, so the routes below come from agent itinerary listings for the first departures. Viking's own site says itineraries "may vary by departure date," so check your own sailing's day-by-day before you commit to a pair of shoes.

A timing reality check, because today is 26 October: the Laem Chabang to Benoa sailing leaves today, and guests boarded yesterday. Consider that row a "look, don't book." The next departure still ahead of us is Benoa to Sydney on 6 November, with the Sydney and Auckland sailings after that.
Now for the night-count drama, because cruise lines love a numbers game. The nights in our table run from the sailaway date shown to arrival at the final port. Sellers count from the day you step aboard, so the same voyage can wear a different number depending on who's selling it. The Laem Chabang sailing is listed by cruiseline.co.uk as the 12-night "Bangkok, Bali & Beyond," departing 25 October 2026, with a second day in Laem Chabang before the ship leaves. That's why our table shows 26 October and 10 nights. The Sydney–Auckland voyage is listed by agents as 14 nights, 22 November to 6 December. The ship sits in Sydney overnight, sails at 6pm on 23 November, reaches Auckland at 7am on 5 December and stays there overnight. Viking itself sells the voyage as 15 days. From sailaway to Auckland arrival, that's our 12 nights.
Our database also holds 27- and 29-night sailings that start on the same dates as the legs above (26 October and 6 November). The Benoa–Sydney leg arrives in Sydney on 22 November, which is 27 nights after 26 October. The Sydney–Auckland leg arrives in Auckland on 5 December, which is 29 nights after 6 November. Some agents list the Benoa–Auckland combination as 30 nights, so expect the number to wobble from site to site. Whatever the label, confirm the dates and port list for the exact sailing before you book.
Weather and seas
Bali and Indonesia: This is the shoulder of the wet season. Expect roughly 30°C days, 24°C nights, and short, heavy afternoon showers that arrive like they've got a grudge. Some Novembers stay dry until December. Komodo tends to be drier through November.
Northern Australia: The 16-night sailing hits Darwin on 10–11 November (arrive 4pm, leave 1pm), which is inside the Northern Territory Government's official stinger season of 1 October to 31 May. So swimming plans get a hard no from the box jellyfish. Cyclone season officially runs 1 November to 30 April, though most activity lands January to March. Early-November risk is low, but it isn't zero.
Southern Australia and New Zealand: This is the mild, changeable part. Hobart's long-term December average high is 20.4°C. December averages for New Zealand (high/low) are Auckland 22/15°C, Wellington 19/12°C, Christchurch 21/11°C and Dunedin 18/10°C. On the Auckland–Sydney sailing, iCruise's day-by-day lists sea days "cruising" the Foveaux Strait, the Tasman Sea and the Bass Strait, plus a Gippsland Coast day before Sydney. That's a lot of water between the postcards. If you're prone to seasickness, pack your remedy and don't hope for the best.
What the ports are worth
- Melbourne: On the Sydney–Auckland sailing you get 8am to 11pm in port. That's enough for laneway coffee and an actual dinner ashore. Going the other way, the listing for the 6 December departure gives 8am to 6pm, so you'll need to be quicker with the coffee.
- Hobart: It's a short call whichever way you sail. On Sydney–Auckland it's 7am to 4pm. On Auckland–Sydney it's 11am to 6pm. Pick one thing and do it properly.
- Napier: Sydney–Auckland gives you 8am to 2pm. Auckland–Sydney gives you noon to 6pm. Either way, choose your tour with that clock in mind.
- Cairns, Townsville and the Whitsundays: Each is a full 8am to 6pm day on the 16-night sailing. Mooloolaba runs 8am to 8pm. One agent lists Brisbane instead, so confirm which you're getting.
- Singapore: The ship overnights, which are days 7 and 8 of the voyage (31 October and 1 November on the 25 October boarding). So you can see the city at night as well as by day.
The Melbourne, Hobart and Napier times come from agent listings for the 22 November and 6 December departures. They can shift on later sailings.
Which length suits whom
The 10-night Laem Chabang–Benoa run suits first-timers to Southeast Asia who want a lot of countries without a lot of commitment. It's already sailing, so file it under "next time." The 16-night Benoa–Sydney sailing suits anyone who wants Komodo and the Queensland coast on one ticket. The 12-night Sydney–Auckland and Auckland–Sydney sailings suit people who want New Zealand's coastline without a month away. The 27- and 29-night combinations are for those with the time and the budget. On price, Cruiseweb lists a balcony on the first Auckland–Sydney sailing (embarking 6 December) from US$11,499 per person (double occupancy, taxes included). It lists the Benoa–Sydney balcony (6 November) from US$7,699 per person on the same basis. Later Auckland–Sydney departures show only "from" prices with no cabin category attached. The 31 January 2027 departure, for example, shows from US$9,499. That isn't a like-for-like comparison with a balcony fare, so don't take it as a saving. These are one agent's prices and they move.
Packing
Pack light cotton for Indonesia and Darwin, plus a rain jacket. For New Zealand and Tasmania, add a warm layer, because a 10°C Dunedin night will humble your linen. Sunscreen and a hat go in every bag. Viking Venus carries 930 guests on a 47,842-ton hull, which is more boutique hotel than floating theme park.
