What Viking Octantis's Autumn Season Is Actually Like
The Octantis is a 378-passenger, ice-strengthened expedition ship, and this autumn she does a hemisphere-sized costume change. She leaves Florida in the humid Caribbean, slides through the Panama Canal, and ends up in Patagonia and Antarctica wearing a parka. Our database doesn't hold port lists for these sailings, so everything below comes from Viking's itinerary pages and retailer listings. Check Viking's own itinerary before you book.

Viking counts it as 41 days. |
The Caribbean and Pacific run
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs until November 30, and this sailing leaves on November 6. That puts the Gulf and Caribbean days (Nov 7–10) inside it, so keep your travel insurance paperwork handy. After the Panama Canal transit on November 11, you're on the Pacific side. Expect hot, sticky days at Cozumel, Fuerte Amador and Manta. Once you're on the Pacific, the pace is leisurely: two sea days between Manta and Callao (Nov 15–16), a Callao stop on November 17, then two more sea days before Iquique on November 20. After that come two more sea days to Valparaíso. So this is a sailing for people who enjoy a long, quiet stretch at sea, with a few ports to break it up. One retailer lists a suite at $13,999 per person, double occupancy. It showed no balcony price.
Fjords, then the bottom of the world
The November 23 sailing is the scenery-heavy one. It has fjord days, Puerto Chacabuco, Punta Arenas, Garibaldi Glacier and a Cape Horn pass, then ends in Ushuaia. iCruise and CruiseWeb both list a balcony at $10,199 per person for this departure. Suite prices differ: iCruise shows $13,999 and CruiseWeb shows $14,999. Get a live quote before you commit.
The Buenos Aires departures are the Antarctic ones. On the December 4 sailing, you stay in a Buenos Aires hotel and fly to Ushuaia, where the ship begins. The schedule then runs Drake Passage on Dec 6, seven Peninsula days (Dec 7–13), the Drake again, Cape Horn on Dec 15, and Ushuaia on Dec 16. The Drake can be rough. One guest review mentions 20-foot waves going south, while another reports a calm return crossing. Guest reviews also say wind and sea state decide whether the small boats can launch. Reviewers report an IAATO rule of 100 people ashore at once, so with 378 guests aboard, you go ashore in waves.
Which sailing suits whom
- The 12-night Antarctic sailings: best if you want penguins and ice and don't want to give up more than two weeks. December is the longest-daylight, warmest part of the season, according to operator guides. January brings chicks. Whales tend to peak in February and March, which makes the February 8 departure a good pick.
- The 12-night fjords sailing: better if Antarctica sounds too cold or too rough, but you still want glaciers and Cape Horn.
- The 17-night run: a repositioning voyage with a canal transit and plenty of sea days.
- The 40-night sailing: only for people who can disappear for six weeks. It strings the canal run, the Chilean fjords and the Antarctic leg into one trip, and ends in Ushuaia on December 16. Viking notes that itineraries and excursions can change, so check its page for the latest route.
What to pack
For the Caribbean and Panama, bring lightweight clothes, sunscreen and a rain layer. For the south, operators put Peninsula temperatures at roughly -2 to 8°C (28 to 46°F), so bring waterproof outer layers, warm mid-layers, gloves and a hat. A 40-night guest needs both wardrobes, since that sailing goes from the tropics to Antarctica. The 17-night guest ends in Valparaíso and can skip the full polar kit. The December 26 departure runs over New Year's through January 7, so book early if you want a holiday-week sailing.
The ship's latest CDC inspection score was 98 out of 100 on October 13, 2025. For deck plans and specs, see the Viking Octantis ship page, and browse all itineraries to compare other options.
