What Silver Dawn's Autumn Mediterranean Season Is Actually Like

Let's be honest about the Mediterranean in November and December: it's the season for people who'd rather see a place than tan in it. The crowds have gone home. Silver Dawn (40,700 tons, 11 decks, a Mega Yacht class ship by our data) slides into harbours that were elbow-to-elbow in August, and for once you can see the monuments instead of the back of someone's selfie stick. The trade-off is weather with opinions. Strong ones. Delivered without being asked.

The weather, without the brochure gloss

Expect mild days and cool evenings. Naples highs average about 17°C (63°F) in November and 13°C (55°F) in December, according to weather2travel. Valletta in December runs from roughly 11°C at night to 17°C by day (52–63°F). Sea temperatures sit around 17–21°C across both ports and both months, so it's a view, not a swimming pool. (Dip a toe if you must. We'll wait, and we won't judge the noise you make.) Rain depends on where you are. Naples gets about 147 mm in November against 112 mm in December, with some rain on around 15 days in each month. Valletta flips it: December is wetter there (about 99 mm, against 70 mm in November). Plan on some soggy port days and treat any dry one as a bonus, like finding a twenty in last winter's coat. Winter seas can also be livelier than summer's glassy ones, especially on open crossings.

The sailings, and who they suit

DepartsLength / routePublished portsBest for
Nov 1 (tomorrow)7 nights, Barcelona to CivitavecchiaPalma, Tunis, Cagliari, Trapani, Naples; 1 sea dayNobody who's reading this today, sadly, since it sails tomorrow. Listed so you can see the route and sigh.
Nov 257 nights, Civitavecchia to CagliariNaples, Valletta (Nov 28–29), Trapani, Tunis, Cagliari; 1 sea dayShort, port-heavy getaways for people who treat sea days as a personal insult
Nov 2514 nights, Civitavecchia to LisbonAdds Cartagena, Málaga (Dec 5–6), Cádiz; 3 sea daysSlow-travel types who want Spain too
Dec 27 nights, Cagliari to LisbonNot in our data; the 14-night calls Cartagena, Málaga and Cádiz over these same datesIberian-coast fans (confirm ports with Silversea)
Dec 912 nights, Lisbon to MiamiFunchal, Porto Santo; 9 sea daysCrossing devotees, the people who hear "nine sea days" and say "perfect"

The Nov 1 Barcelona sailing leaves tomorrow, so if you're still planning, the Nov 25 departures are the nearest ones to look at. (Yes, we know. Tomorrow. Dramatic, isn't it?) There's also a 26-night Civitavecchia–Miami sailing from Nov 25 that stitches the 14-night route to the crossing. It's a commitment, but it's one way to get to Miami without a flight, and you'll arrive with a very smug story.

What the ports are really worth

  • Naples (Nov 7 on the Nov 1 sailing, Nov 26 on the Nov 25 sailings): Pompeii and the Amalfi coast are the big-ticket excursions. Wet cobbles are not the time for fashion shoes, though. Ask us how we know. Actually, don't.
  • Valletta: Silversea lists the ship in port on two consecutive days (in at 08:00 on Nov 28, out at 18:00 on Nov 29) on the Nov 25 sailings. That's the sleeper hit of the itinerary, because you can see the city after the day-trippers leave and the place finally exhales.
  • Tunis (La Goulette): Probably the most "different" stop on these itineraries, and the one your friends will pretend they've heard of. Check current government travel advice before you pick excursions.
  • Málaga: Silversea lists it on Dec 5 (in at 09:00) and Dec 6 (out at 18:00) on the 14-night sailing. It's easy to do on foot, and winter is the pleasant time to do it, with no sunbed turf wars to referee.
  • Funchal and Porto Santo: Madeira breaks up the Atlantic crossing before eight straight sea days (Dec 13–20). Think of it as the last cheerful scene before the long, quiet stretch of the film.

Seasonal quirks

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends November 30, so the December crossing falls after it. Fares vary by cabin category and by seller, so get a current quote from Silversea and compare like with like. Silversea's Nov 25 Civitavecchia–Lisbon page lists All-Inclusive Plus, All-Inclusive and Last-Minute fare types, so ask which applies to your dates. Ports may also run shorter hours or reduced services in winter, so verify any tour you've set your heart on before you build an entire personality around it.

What to pack

Layers, a waterproof jacket, an umbrella and shoes that cope with wet stone. For December evenings, add a warm coat, a hat and a scarf. Leave the beachwear at home. It will only judge you from the suitcase.

Before you book
