What Norwegian Gem's Autumn Caribbean / Bahamas Season From Tampa Is Actually Like

Plot twist: Norwegian Gem is Tampa's Norwegian ship this season. Under a homeport swap with Norwegian Dawn, she sails from Tampa while Dawn heads to Jacksonville. The swap covers November 2026 through March 2027, according to Travel Extra. Our database has the dates but not the ports, so the port lists below come from published schedule listings. Treat them as a guide and confirm on Norwegian's booking page before you hand over a single dollar. Some third-party listings disagree on details, because of course they do.

The ship, briefly

Gem is a 2007-built, 93,530-ton Jewel Class ship with 15 decks, 2,394 passengers and 1,070 crew. She got a refresh in 2026, so she's a bit like a friend who came back from a long weekend with a new haircut. Her latest CDC inspection, on March 23, 2026, scored 94 out of 100. You can look up the full inspection report, and the Norwegian Gem ship page has the rest of the specs.

Weather and seas

Hurricane season officially ends November 30, which means three sailings overlap with it. The Nov 16 and Nov 21 trips sit entirely inside it. The Nov 28 trip leaves with the season's last three days (Nov 28 to 30) still on the calendar, then reaches its first port, San Juan, on Dec 1. Storm odds fall away as November goes on, and Cruisebound says tropical activity is at very low levels by December 1, though rare off-season storms can still happen. "Unlikely" still isn't "impossible," so buy travel insurance for all three November departures and stop tempting fate. Rainfall also eases on many Eastern Caribbean islands from December, which helps the 12-night run's stops like St. Thomas and St. Maarten. Aruba sits south of the main hurricane track and has a comparatively dry climate, which makes it one of the more weather-reliable stops on the list. Roatan stays warm but can get rain more often than the drier southern islands, so keep a light rain layer handy. Winter fronts can still stir up the Gulf and the open Caribbean, so choppy days are possible. The 12-night run has seven ports and just one sea day between St. Thomas and Falmouth (Dec 6), so the open-water stretches are short but not necessarily smooth.

What the ports are worth

  • Cozumel: Reef snorkelling that doesn't make you work for it, plus beach clubs for anyone whose idea of exercise is rotating the sun lounger. On the Dec 28 sailing you arrive at 10:30 a.m., so you get a shorter day. Plan your priorities like a heist.
  • Roatan: Beaches and snorkelling, with a 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. stay on the Dec 31 call. Yes, you'll be ringing in the new year with sand still in your shoes.
  • Harvest Caye, Belize: Norwegian's beach day, designed with cruisers in mind. The Jan 1 call runs only 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., so don't plan a marathon session, especially after the night before.
  • Great Stirrup Cay: Norwegian's own Bahamas island. Expect sand, a drink in your hand and not a lot of plot. Sometimes that's exactly the assignment.
  • Aruba and Curaçao: Aruba is among the more weather-reliable stops on the list, which is a nice thing to say about any island in the Caribbean. Willemstad is worth a wander for its colourful waterfront, so bring a camera and a bit of restraint.

Which length suits whom

The 5-night Nov 16 sailing is the cheapest way to test the ship, and it leaves on a Monday and returns on a Saturday. Think of it as a cruise tasting menu. The 7-night Western Caribbean sailings are the sweet spot for first-timers. The Nov 21 one runs straight through Thanksgiving (Nov 26) and is the cheapest of the three, at $559 against $649 on Dec 21 and $749 on Dec 28. That's a turkey dinner with a view and no dishes. The Dec 21 and Dec 28 sailings are holiday weeks, so expect more families and higher fares. The 11- and 12-night sailings are for people who want ports more than lounging, but you'll spend more on excursions and have more days at sea. You're committing, so commit properly.

Later in the season

From January the 4-night Great Stirrup Cay sailings (Jan 14, Jan 28 and Feb 1) are the budget option, with fares from $279 to $309. The Feb 5 sailing goes to Cozumel and New Orleans and runs through Mardi Gras week (Fat Tuesday is Feb 9). It's priced from $1,029, well above the Western Caribbean 7-nighters, because apparently beads cost extra. If you're booking a holiday sailing, our cabin size guide will help you choose a room before you commit to a long week in it.

What to pack

  • Light, quick-drying clothes, swimwear and water shoes.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen.
  • A packable rain jacket for the rain showers in Roatan and Belize.
  • A sweater or light jacket for breezy decks and evenings. Tampa mornings can be cool from January, and New Orleans in February can be properly chilly.
