What Margaritaville At Sea Islander's Autumn Caribbean Season Is Actually Like

Autumn on the Islander is a season of two moods, and honestly, same. October is the tail end of hurricane season, with all the bargain-hunting and itinerary-shuffling that implies. It's the cruise equivalent of a sale rack: great prices, but you might get a surprise. By late November the whole Gulf and western Caribbean exhales, and December is the good stuff. The ship sails round-trip from Tampa, and our data shows 23 sailings in this stretch. Some of those sailings are far better documented than others, and yes, we'll be getting to that. Drama is coming.

Weather and seas: October is moody, December is the reward

Hurricane season officially runs through November 30. According to NOAA's National Hurricane Center, the peak is around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That makes October the tail end rather than the worst of it, and activity tapers off further in November. October is still rainy across the region, though, and Jamaica's rainy season covers October and November. Pack for a downpour that blows through, not a washed-out week. Think dramatic ten-minute sulk, not a week-long grudge. Storms are the one thing that can reroute a ship, so a swapped port is a real possibility on any October sailing. The upside is that lower demand tends to mean better prices, which is the universe's way of saying "sorry about the rain."

Royal Caribbean's cruise-planning guide puts average Caribbean temperatures in November between the high 70s and low 90s (°F). December is the sweet spot: Royal Caribbean's Cozumel guide gives temperatures of 70°F to 85°F for the December-to-March high season. That makes it comfortable for snorkelling without feeling like you're walking through soup. Nobody wants to snorkel in soup.

The 7-night runs: four sailings, three different routes

Our data lists four 7-night sailings from Tampa, on October 3, 10, 17 and November 7, but plot twist: they are not the same trip. The Jamaica loop is the October 3 departure (that's today, so if you're already aboard, hello, and please put the drink down long enough to read this). Published sailing schedules show it as Tampa, a sea day, George Town, Grand Cayman (October 5), Ocho Rios, Jamaica (October 6), a sea day, Cozumel, Mexico (October 8), another sea day, then back in Tampa on October 10. That's three port days in seven nights, which leaves three sea days to spend on deck, doing what the brand was practically built for. The line's own site lists this route as its 7-Night Jamaica, Cayman & Mexico itinerary.

The other three are different. Published schedules list the October 10 and November 7 departures as New Orleans & Mexico sailings; on October 10 that means New Orleans (October 12), Cozumel (October 14) and Progreso (October 15). October 17 is listed as Key West & Western Caribbean, calling at Key West, Roatán, Belize City and Cozumel. Check the dates on the line's booking page before you plan around any of them, because "I assumed it was the Jamaica one" is a very sad thing to say at a gangway.

For the Jamaica loop, here's what the three stops are good for, in the order you'll reach them:

• George Town: clear water and sandbar-style excursions. The port is a tender port, so allow extra time getting ashore. Yes, that means small boats, and yes, that means patience.
• Ocho Rios: waterfalls and jungle scenery. This is the port most likely to get rained on in autumn, so go with a flexible attitude and a quick-dry shirt. You're going to get wet near a waterfall anyway; the sky is just helping.
• Cozumel: reef snorkelling and beach clubs. It's the easiest "I did something" day of the trip, and the photos will do the bragging for you.

Which length suits whom

One honest caveat, and we say it with love: we don't have port lists in our data for the 4-, 5- and 6-night sailings, so we won't guess. We refuse to hand you an invented itinerary and call it research. The line's Tampa lineup has included Cozumel and Progreso express runs, plus Key West and Nassau, but we haven't matched any of those to these specific dates. Seasonal quirks

• Shoulder-season pricing: October demand is soft, which is where bargains come from. From November the holidays start pushing demand and prices up, and December is especially popular. Early birds get the cheaper cabin; late birds get the story about it.
• Thanksgiving and December crowds: the late-November and December departures are the likeliest to be full of families. Book early if you care about cabin choice, and see our cabin size guide before you pick.
• Itinerary flexibility: keep your shore excursions refundable in October, in case a port gets swapped for weather. Optimism is lovely; a refundable booking is lovelier.

What to pack

Pack light layers, a compact rain jacket for October, reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky beach entries, and a light sweater for the chilly air-conditioned lounges. The boring-but-reassuring bit

Okay, deep breath, here's the grown-up part. The Islander was built in 2000 and refurbished in 2024. She carries 2,210 passengers and 920 crew across 12 decks. Her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is 100 out of 100, from the February 27, 2026 inspection. That's a perfect score, which is more than we can say for most of our own life choices.
