What Celebrity Apex's Autumn Caribbean / Bahamas Season Is Actually Like

Apex spends the season doing laps out of Port Canaveral, like a very glamorous hamster wheel. Our schedule shows 17 sailings in this window, typically 7 nights each, and the 14 we have dates for run from Nov 7 to Feb 6. The length is settled, so the real choice is which flavour of week you want: Eastern, Western, or the one-off sailing that stops at Nassau. The ports below come from third-party booking listings, which agree with each other on the routes. Celebrity can change a routing, so confirm yours on Celebrity's own site before you book anything non-refundable.

The two-week rotation

The listings show a pattern: an Eastern Caribbean week, then a Western one, repeating. The Nov 14 sailing is the odd one out. Nassau, Grand Cayman and Cozumel appear in place of the usual Western Key West call. If you want a Bahamas stop in this window, that's the date to look at.

Sailing datesListed ports
Nov 7, Nov 21, Dec 5, Dec 19, Jan 2, Jan 16, Jan 30Puerto Plata, Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas), Basseterre (St. Kitts)
Dec 12, Dec 26, Jan 9, Jan 23, Feb 6Key West, George Town (Grand Cayman), Cozumel
Nov 14Nassau, George Town, Cozumel
Nov 28Key West, George Town, Cozumel

For sailings after Feb 6, check Celebrity's Apex itineraries page, because our data doesn't list their ports. Three ports in seven nights means three sea days, which is plenty of time to lie about reading a book. The two weeks feel different, though. The Eastern listings show a sea day after Port Canaveral, then Puerto Plata, St. Thomas and St. Kitts in a row, then two more sea days. That's three port days back to back, so pace yourself. The Western and Nassau listings put a port on days 2, 4 and 6, with a sea day between each. That's a gentler rhythm and a better fit if you like a nap between adventures.

Weather and sea conditions

November still sits inside hurricane season, which officially runs through November 30. The four November sailings (Nov 7, 14, 21 and 28) are therefore the ones where an itinerary swap for weather is most plausible. A cruise guide says tropical storm activity drops to very low levels from December 1, though rare off-season storms can still happen. Daytime highs run from the upper 70s to the mid-80s°F, with sea temperatures in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Winter brings a different problem: trade winds and passing cold fronts. The same guide says they can make the water choppy, especially on longer Eastern routes. A front can also halt tendering for a day, and Grand Cayman is a tender port. Ships anchor off George Town and ferry guests ashore. When George Town is too rough, ships have sometimes been diverted to Spotts on the island's south side, and the captain makes the final call. So don't build your whole week around one George Town beach day. Apex is a big Edge-class ship, so she should handle chop better than a smaller one. That doesn't mean she's immune, and your stomach has no loyalty to ship size.

What the ports are worth

  • St. Thomas: A big cruise stop, so expect company. Hit the Charlotte Amalie shops early, or go straight to Magens Bay to beat the crowd.
  • Puerto Plata: The cable car up Pico Isabel de Torres is the classic move, and it's a good change from beach-only days.
  • St. Kitts: Brimstone Hill Fortress is the history pick for people who need more than a drink in a coconut.
  • Key West: Walkable and fun, and cheerfully crowded.
  • Cozumel: Reefs and beach clubs.
  • Grand Cayman: Seven Mile Beach and Stingray City, with the tender caveat above. Have a backup plan in case your ship ends up at Spotts.

Which sailing suits whom

Early-December sailings (Dec 5 and Dec 12) are the sweet spot for value. One cruise guide calls Dec 1-19 the month's value window because schools are still in session, so fewer families are on board and fares stay lower. The Nov 21 sailing covers Thanksgiving on board. The Dec 19 sailing runs through Christmas, and the Dec 26 sailing covers New Year's Eve. The same guide says fares typically rise with holiday demand and that balconies on popular ships start to thin out well ahead of sailing. So if you want a balcony on either holiday week, don't wait. For a first cruise I'd go Western: the port, sea, port, sea rhythm is easy on the legs and gives you proper beach days. Eastern is better if you want to tick off new islands and don't mind three port days in a row.

What to pack

  • Swimwear, water shoes and reef-friendly sunscreen.
  • A light jacket or sweater. Port Canaveral mornings and breezy sea-day decks can be cooler than the tropics.
  • A compact rain jacket for November showers.
  • Motion-sickness remedies if you're prone to queasiness, since cold fronts can stir things up.
  • One nicer outfit for specialty dining nights.
