What Carnival Valor's Autumn Caribbean Season Is Actually Like
Meet Valor: a 2004-built Conquest Class ship who got a drydock refit and refurbishment in 2025 and came out looking refreshed, the cruise-ship version of a "I just got back from a wellness retreat" glow-up. She sails out of New Orleans on short Western Caribbean runs. This stretch (22 October to late December) gives you quick cruises, warm water and a hurricane season that is winding down but hasn't quite left the building. Here is what that means once you're aboard.
The sailings, in plain English
| 4-night | 5-night | |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | Five departures, every other Thursday: 22 Oct, 5 Nov, 19 Nov, 3 Dec, 17 Dec | Nine departures in our data, 26 Oct through 21 Dec |
| Ports | Our data has no port list. Outside listings for the 5 Nov sailing show Cozumel only, on Saturday 7 Nov, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., with a sea day on each side. Confirm the others with Carnival. | Cozumel, then Progreso (the Merida port). On the 26 Oct sailing that is Cozumel on Wednesday 28 Oct and Progreso on Thursday 29 Oct, each 8 a.m.–4 p.m., with sea days on the Tuesday and Friday. |
| Best for | First-timers, a long weekend, anyone nervous about sea days | People who want a second port and a bit more Mexico |
The 5 Nov 4-night sailing and the 26 Oct 5-night sailing both leave at 3:30 p.m. and are back at 8 a.m. Check the times for your own departure date with Carnival. Between New Orleans and the first palm tree you get a full sea day of Gulf of Mexico. Think of it as the cruise's slow-burn opening act. The 4-night cruise is basically Cozumel with a generous helping of water on either side. The 5-night adds Progreso for one extra night, which is the cruise equivalent of "fine, I'll have a second helping."
Weather and seas
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs until 30 November. Cruise guides say the Western Caribbean, Cozumel included, can still see tropical trouble into early November, so the season is a houseguest who keeps saying they're leaving and then asking for more coffee. Carnival can change itineraries when weather threatens, so check the forecast before you sail. A swapped port or an extra sea day is the usual outcome. By the December departures the season has officially ended, and you can exhale.
The bigger drama is the Gulf itself. Cold fronts become routine from mid-November, and the open water between Louisiana and Mexico can get lively. In December 2023, ships bound for New Orleans, Carnival Glory among them, hit rough water. Fox 8's headline put the swells at 20 feet, though the report itself gives no measured height and just talks about "massive swells." That is a bad day, not a typical one, but anyone prone to seasickness should pack remedies for the sea days and not learn this lesson in the buffet line.
Mexico itself stays warm. Cozumel in November runs from the mid-80s to around 90°F depending on the source, easing a few degrees in December, with rain tapering off as the weeks pass. December evenings can feel cooler than you'd expect, so don't be the person shivering on deck in a tank top and regret.
What the ports are worth
- Cozumel: Eight hours is enough for a reef snorkel or a beach club afternoon, so choose your fun and commit. Book anything with a fixed time through the ship or a reputable operator so the all-aboard time can't catch you out. The ship will not wait for your third margarita.
- Progreso: The pier is about four miles long, so you can't just stroll into town. A free shuttle takes 10–15 minutes, and the last one back leaves an hour before the ship does. Merida is roughly 30–45 minutes away (guides vary) and suits a guided day. Chichen Itza is a much longer haul. Cruise port guides put the drive at roughly two hours each way, so check the timing on your excursion and treat it as a full day. The public beaches are free, and walking away from the pier gets you more space.
Pack for this
Pack lightweight clothes, a light jacket or cardigan for sea days and December nights, and a compact rain layer. Add sunscreen, water shoes for beach days and motion-sickness remedies. Read the alcohol policy before you pack drinks, because finding out at the pier is a very expensive way to learn things.
Crowds and prices
Early November is shoulder season, and one aggregator snapshot listed the 4-night sailing departing 5 Nov at a starting price of $641 per person for an interior cabin (double occupancy, taxes and fees included). That is for the 4-night cruise only, so the 5-night sailings will price differently. Prices move daily, so check before you book. The 21 December 5-night sailing returns on 26 December, so it straddles Christmas and will likely cost more and be busier. The 31 October 5-night departure falls on Halloween, so expect costumes, and possibly a very committed pirate in the elevator.
For ship details see our Carnival Valor profile. Her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is 99 out of 100 (inspected 16 February 2026), which is the kind of grade you'd frame. You can compare other ships in our CDC inspection lookup.
