The Tea

Sitka is the Alaska cruise port that feels most like a real place — because it genuinely is one. A small town of 8,500 people surrounded by Tongass National Forest, with a deep Russian heritage (it was the capital of Russian Alaska). The port is a tender operation, which limits its appeal to the mega-ships.

The town is walkable and charming. The Sitka National Historical Park (totem poles in a rainforest setting) is excellent, and the Alaska Raptor Center rehabilitation facility is worth the visit. If you're lucky, you might see sea otters in the harbor — for free, no excursion needed.

The tea: Sitka is what Alaska cruise ports should feel like — authentic, unhurried, and connected to the land. It doesn't have the souvenir-shop gauntlet of Juneau or the theme-park feel of Skagway. The downside is weather — Sitka is wet and often foggy, and the tender port means cancellations are possible. Worth the gamble for the real Alaska experience.
