The Tea

Roatan, Honduras is the port that raises eyebrows on itineraries — Honduras has a Level 3 travel advisory ("Reconsider Travel"), and that reputation follows the island. But Roatan itself is significantly safer than the mainland, essentially operating as a Caribbean resort island that happens to be part of Honduras.

The port area at Mahogany Bay (Carnival) or Coxen Hole is well-managed, and the island's primary industry is tourism. The beaches and snorkeling are legitimately world-class — the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is right offshore. Prices are low by Caribbean standards, making Roatan one of the better value ports of call.

The tea: the safety concerns are real but contextual. Stick to the tourist areas, don't wander into Coxen Hole town at night, and book excursions through reputable operators. Roatan is where the "is it safe?" question actually has a nuanced answer — and the cruise lines neither fully address it nor honestly discuss the mainland situation.
