It’s November 2, hurricane season has four weeks left to misbehave, and Holland America’s Zuiderdam is about to start a run of Caribbean and Bahamas sailings out of Miami. If you’re wondering whether this ship, this region and this particular slice of the calendar suit you, this is the honest version. It’s a feature, not a timetable (the full sailing list lives on our Zuiderdam itineraries page, and it’s far less chatty).
One housekeeping note, because accuracy matters more than a tidy story: our database holds no port lists for these sailings. Every port named below comes from Holland America’s season announcement and third-party booking listings, and I say where sources agree. Confirm your exact route with the cruise line before you pay. Yes, I’m nagging. It’s for your own good.

The Ship: Mid-Sized, Traditional, Freshly Tidied
Zuiderdam is not trying to be a floating theme park. At 82,820 gross tons with 1,970 guests, she’s a mid-sized, grown-up ship with a loyal following and a decidedly un-flashy personality. Think cardigan, not crop top. She was the first of Holland America’s four Vista-class ships, and she’s been sailing since 2002, so she wears her age with some dignity.
The good news is that she’s had a recent spruce-up. After a two-week dry dock in the Bahamas, she returned to service from Miami on December 6, 2025. Holland America’s list of changes is practical rather than glamorous:
- A reworked Crow’s Nest with a bandstand stage and upgraded lighting and audio for small live shows and talks.
- Eleven new ocean-view staterooms on decks one and seven.
- New bathroom flooring and wallpaper in about 300 other staterooms, plus new carpeting in many verandah cabins and suites.
- New carpet in the Dining Room, Lido Market, Canaletto and the corridors, new upholstery in Canaletto and Lido Market, and new furniture around the pool.
That’s a refresh, not a reinvention: new haircut, same person. A bigger “Evolution” makeover has been announced for her, with Solo Verandah staterooms and a Grand Dutch Café. A July 2026 retailer post said no completion date or post-refit itineraries had been announced, so don’t book this autumn expecting it. You can read more on our Zuiderdam ship page.
She suits: couples and travellers who care more about the ports than the pool deck, and anyone who likes a proper sea day with a lecture, a drink and a view. People who want a long, port-heavy voyage will like her too. She doesn’t suit: families chasing waterslides, or anyone who wants a brand-new ship. For the cleanliness-minded, her latest CDC score is 90. The CDC treats 85 or lower as unsatisfactory, so that’s a comfortable pass, though not a perfect mark. (A gold star, not a trophy.)
The Itineraries: Which One to Pick
Here’s the structure that makes sense of the schedule. The 7-night sailings are the building blocks, and the 14- and 17-night voyages are those blocks stitched together. Cruise Lego, basically.
- 10 nights, departing November 11, back November 21: Two sources agree on Bonaire (Kralendijk), Curaçao (Willemstad), Aruba (Oranjestad), Cabo Rojo in the Dominican Republic, and Half Moon Cay. It has four sea days and five port days.
- 7 nights, departing November 21: Key West, Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Holland America describes this as a holiday edition that swaps Half Moon Cay for Key West.
- 7 nights, departing November 28: Half Moon Cay, Amber Cove, Grand Turk and Nassau, per listings.
- Later weekly sailings: Listings show December 5 with Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay. They show December 12 as a western week (Half Moon Cay, Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Cozumel) and December 19 as a Bahamas-and-Key West holiday week. December 26 is a seven-night holiday sailing to Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay, returning to Miami on January 2, 2027. Booking listings agree on these four weeks, but our database has no ports for them, so confirm with Holland America. December 26 isn’t in the fare table below, so check its price on the booking page.
- 17 nights, departing November 11: This is the 10-night ABC voyage followed by the November 21 seven-night, giving nine ports of call.
- 14 nights: Two weekly itineraries back to back. The November 21 departure pairs the western week with the Bahamas week.
My picks:
- First Caribbean cruise, or one week off work: take a 7-night. November 21 gives you the classic Western Caribbean four-pack. November 28 is the gentler Bahamas and Dominican Republic week.
- You like a long haul and the ABC islands: the 10-night, which has the most interesting port mix of the autumn.
- You want to really switch off: the 17-night, which costs $173 less per person than booking the 10-night and the November 21 seven-night separately (see the money section). Out-of-office message: “Gone. Do not call.”
One caution. Holland America’s season announcement lists several weekly itineraries shared by multiple ships departing Fort Lauderdale. Our data for the 14 sailings we can see, and the listings I found, put Zuiderdam’s autumn sailings in Miami. Check your own booking confirmation before you buy flights.
The Ports: What’s Actually Worth Your Time
Willemstad, Curaçao. The pastel waterfront is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the call runs 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM on the 10-night sailing. Wander the old town on foot and stay for the evening.
Oranjestad, Aruba. This is a beach day. The call runs 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so you have time to do nothing impressively.
Kralendijk, Bonaire. The 10-night call is noon to 11:00 PM, which makes it a late-afternoon-into-evening stop. Bonaire is known for snorkelling, so a waterside afternoon and a late dinner is the play.
Cabo Rojo, Dominican Republic. This is a new port (it opened in January 2024) and the 10-night call runs 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. One guide says ships dock directly rather than tender. Free shuttles run to the town of Pedernales, about 20 minutes away. The famous Bahía de las Águilas is far from the port and needs an organised tour. The port is still developing, so amenities may change.
RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. Holland America’s private island has just had upgrades. They include a new Beach Club (day passes became bookable in early October 2026, and the pass price wasn’t in the announcement), a complimentary island-only food pavilion, upgraded cabanas and four pickleball courts. Beach Club pass holders get priority tendering. The 10-night call is 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The western week. Key West is walkable, Ocho Rios has Dunn’s River Falls, Grand Cayman (George Town) is a tender port, and Cozumel is the Mexican beach-and-reef stop. Book popular excursions early.
Conditions and Packing for November and December
Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30. The November 11, 21 and 28 departures sit inside it, and the December ones sit after it. November is past the seasonal peak, but a storm can still change an itinerary. The ABC islands sit outside the main hurricane belt, though November is their wetter season.
Western Caribbean and Bahamas sailings can also run into cold fronts that bring rough seas. Expect warm, showery weather. Current Results’ November climate table puts average daytime highs at about 82°F (28°C) in Nassau, about 90°F (32°C) in Aruba and the Cayman Islands, and about 88°F (31°C) in Curaçao and Bonaire. Its December table has Nassau at 79°F (26°C), Aruba and the Cayman Islands at about 87°F (31°C), San Juan at 84°F (29°C) and St. Thomas at 86°F (30°C). In short: sunscreen in both months, and the Bahamas are the cooler end of the trip.
Pack:
- Two swimsuits (the first one never dries).
- A light rain jacket and a thin sweater for cold fronts and arctic air-conditioning.
- Water shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
- Something smarter for specialty dinners.
- Motion remedies if you’re prone to seasickness.
- Your passport. You’ll visit several countries, and a passport makes flying home from any port far less dramatic.
Money: Where the Value Is
These are advertised inside-cabin fares per person, taken from listings at the time of writing. Prices move daily, and different sites showed different numbers, so treat them as a guide. Confirm whether taxes and fees are included.
| Departure | Length | Listed fare, per person (inside) |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 11 | 10 nights | $972 |
| Nov 11 | 17 nights | $1,499 |
| Nov 21 | 7 nights | $700 |
| Nov 28 | 7 nights | $642 |
| Dec 5 and Dec 12 | 7 nights | $654 each |
| Dec 19 | 7 nights | $1,024 |
A few takeaways:
- The 17-night beats booking two sailings separately. The 17-night fare of $1,499 works out to about $88 a night. The same listing showed the 10-night ($972) and the November 21 seven-night ($700) at $1,672 combined, so the 17-night came out $173 cheaper per person than booking those two separately. That’s a comparison with that specific pair, not a claim that it’s the cheapest per night: the lowest 14-night fare I saw ($1,109) works out to about $79 a night.
- Timing matters more than the ship. December 19 at $1,024 costs $382 more than November 28 at $642, roughly 60% more, for the same length of cruise. That’s the holiday premium, and it is not subtle.
- Fares vary by source. For the November 21 14-night, I saw inside fares from $1,109 to $1,454 across different sites. Shop around.
Then come the extras, because of course they do. Holland America’s crew appreciation charge rose on June 1, 2026 to $18 per person per day in standard staterooms and $20 in suites. A 20% service charge applies to drinks and other onboard purchases. For two people in a standard cabin, that’s $252 on a 7-night (2 × 7 × $18), $360 on the 10-night, and $612 on the 17-night. If you’re a couple on the November 28 seven-night, the listed fares are $1,284 (2 × $642). Add $252 in gratuities and you’re at about $1,536 before drinks, excursions, flights and any taxes the listing leaves out. Our cruise tipping guide covers who gets what.
Timing: When to Book and What Sells Out
Let’s be blunt: it’s November 2, and the first departures are close. The November 11 sailings are 9 days away, November 21 is 19 days away, November 28 is 26 days away, and December 5 is 33 days away. Typical guidance is to book early-November sailings four to six months ahead and Thanksgiving sailings six to nine months ahead. So that leisurely planning runway? Gone. You’re in last-minute territory.
That isn’t necessarily bad. Flexible travellers can check fares 30 to 60 days out, though lower prices are never guaranteed. Thanksgiving is November 26, which falls mid-voyage on the November 21 sailing, so that one tends to cost more. The Christmas-week sailings, with December 19 priced well above the rest, are the ones I’d expect to sell out first. Balcony cabins and suites go before inside cabins. If you want Beach Club access, reserve it before you sail. Check the live schedule on our Zuiderdam itineraries page before you commit.
FAQ: Zuiderdam Caribbean Autumn Cruises
Is Zuiderdam a good ship for a Caribbean cruise?
Yes, if you want a mid-sized, traditional ship with a strong itinerary rather than a floating theme park. Zuiderdam carries 1,970 guests on 82,820 gross tons, got a December 2025 refresh, and sails varied routes from Miami. She isn’t new or flashy, so families chasing waterslides and anyone wanting brand-new cabins should look elsewhere.
What is the Zuiderdam’s CDC inspection score?
Our records show 90 out of 100 at the latest inspection, on July 17, 2026. The CDC treats 85 or lower as unsatisfactory, so 90 is a pass, though not a perfect mark. You can check the original report yourself in the CDC’s inspection database, or through the inspection lookup page on this site.
Is it safe to cruise the Caribbean in November?
Generally, yes, but November isn’t storm-proof. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November 30, and a storm can reroute a ship. After that, activity drops to very low levels. The ABC islands sit outside the main hurricane belt, though November is their wetter season. Western Caribbean and Bahamas sailings can also meet cold fronts that bring rough seas.
How much are daily gratuities on Holland America in 2026?
Since June 1, 2026, Holland America’s crew appreciation charge is $18 per person per day in standard staterooms and $20 in suites. A 20% service charge also applies to drinks and other onboard purchases. For two people in a standard cabin on a 7-night sailing, that’s $252. Check whether your fare already includes gratuities.
Does Zuiderdam sail from Miami or Fort Lauderdale?
Every autumn sailing we can see detail for leaves from Miami (14 of the 19 in our data), and the booking listings I found for November 2026 agree. Our records also list San Diego as a home port, so check the embarkation port for any sailing not covered here. Holland America’s season announcement, however, shows several weekly itineraries shared by multiple ships departing Fort Lauderdale. Always confirm the embarkation port on your own booking confirmation before you book flights or hotels.
What ports does Zuiderdam visit on the 10-night cruise from Miami in November 2026?
The 10-night sailing departing November 11, 2026 returns November 21. Two booking sources list Kralendijk (Bonaire), Willemstad (Curaçao), Oranjestad (Aruba), Cabo Rojo in the Dominican Republic, and Half Moon Cay, with four sea days. Our database doesn’t record ports for it, so verify with Holland America before booking.
The Bottom Line
Zuiderdam is a sensible, comfortable, port-focused ship with a recent refresh and a 90 on her latest CDC inspection. She’s right for couples and travellers who want varied itineraries over spectacle. She’s wrong for anyone who wants waterslides or a brand-new ship.
For this autumn, the 10-night ABC sailing on November 11 is the most interesting route. The November 28 seven-night is the cheapest listed week at $642 per person, and the 17-night saves $173 per person against booking the 10-night and the November 21 seven-night separately. Avoid the Christmas premium if your calendar allows. Hurricane season ends November 30, so the early-December departures are the calmest bet on weather. Confirm ports and prices with Holland America, and check the current Zuiderdam schedule before you book. Then go and pack the second swimsuit.
