Anthem of the Seas leaves Sydney on Monday 1 February 2027 for 11 nights of New Zealand and is back on Friday 12 February. This one is defined by its geography: two sea days across the Tasman each way, five ports down the length of New Zealand, and a Fiordland scenic-cruising day on 9 February that is the most weather-exposed leg of the trip. It’s also high summer down here, so leave the parka at home for Sydney (yes, someone will try to pack one).
Start Here
- Now: check your passport is valid to at least 12 August 2027 (six months after you return), and that it’s the original book, not a photocopy.
- Now: if you don’t hold an Australian or New Zealand passport, sort your NZ visa or NZeTA, which carries the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy.
- When check-in opens: finish it in the Royal Caribbean app and choose your arrival slot. The website closes 48 hours before sailing, and the app stays open until 8am on 1 February.
- Before Picton on 4 February: complete the NZ Traveller Declaration, even if you never plan to leave the ship.
- Before you sail: book shore excursions through My Royal Cruise. Royal Caribbean says pre-cruise is the best time.

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite
Most of your deadlines are a few days before sailing, but the paperwork is due now. Here’s the order of play.
| When | What |
|---|---|
| Now | Passport, NZeTA or visa, and a hotel for the night of 31 January |
| About now | Wilson cruise parking can be prepaid up to three months ahead |
| When the app opens it | Check-in, health questionnaire, safety briefing, arrival slot. Blogs say about 45 days out, which would be around 18 December, but that is unconfirmed. |
| 3 days before (29 Jan) | Royal Caribbean encourages check-in by now. Anyone not checked in online must finish at the pier at least 2 hours before the published sailing time. |
| 48 hours before | Website check-in closes |
| 2 days before | Last day to book specialty dining online |
| 8am, 1 Feb | App check-in closes |
| 4 Feb | NZ Traveller Declaration done by the time you berth in Picton |
The Traveller Declaration opens 24 hours before the last international port, and an app or paper form is accepted. Website check-in alone isn’t enough, because you must finish in the app or at the terminal. Royal Caribbean’s pages don’t say when the Cruise Planner opens or what sells out, so book anything you’d cry about missing as soon as you can.
Embarkation Logistics
Sydney has two cruise terminals, and Royal Caribbean says to check your cruise documents for the one your ship uses. The Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) is at West 130 Argyle St, The Rocks NSW 2000, opposite the Sydney Opera House. The other is White Bay, 2041 James Craig Road, Rozelle. The terminal for this sailing isn’t confirmed here, so check before you book parking, transfers or a hotel.
Your boarding window comes from the arrival slot you choose in the app. Show up early and you can’t start boarding, and show up late and you may wait for a later group.
The cut-off
Royal Caribbean runs two clocks, and you have to beat both. One says you must be checked in at least 60 minutes before sailing, or you won’t be permitted to sail. The other says you must be checked in and on board no later than 90 minutes before port operations close. Sydney’s port-operations close time isn’t published, so there’s no single official clock time yet, and the earlier of the two rules is your deadline. If the listed 17:00 departure holds, the 60-minute rule means 16:00 at the very latest, and the 90-minute rule could be stricter still. If you haven’t checked in online, you must finish at the pier at least 2 hours before the published sailing time, which would be 15:00 on a 17:00 departure. Your arrival slot appears on your mobile boarding pass, so aim for that, and confirm the cut-off with Royal Caribbean before you plan a leisurely last-morning brunch.
Parking
If you sail from OPT, there is no parking at the terminal, and drop-off is limited to 3 minutes. Royal Caribbean points to Wilson Car Park. Wilson’s cruise rates for the OPT area are charged per calendar day, prepaid online or in its app, for 4 to 30 days. The sailing spans 12 calendar days, 1 to 12 February, and the totals below are our arithmetic, so check how Wilson counts your entry and exit dates.
| Car park | Per day | Height limit | 12 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Domain | AU$25 | 1.9 m | AU$300 |
| Sydney Opera House | AU$30 | 2.2 m | AU$360 |
| Quay West | AU$40 | 2 m | AU$480 |
| Clocktower | AU$51 | 2 m | AU$612 |
If you miss the prepaid conditions, casual rates apply, and prices can change without notice.
Getting there
- From the airport: Royal Caribbean puts OPT at about 16 km and about 35 minutes. Train, bus, ferry, light rail, taxi and rideshare all work.
- By train: Circular Quay is a few minutes’ walk from OPT. Secondary sources put fares at about AU$21–22 per adult including the airport station fee, but they disagree, so check transportnsw.info.
- Taxi fare: we couldn’t verify one, so we won’t invent one. Pre-book a taxi or rideshare for cruise morning, because they can be hard to find.
- The night before (if you sail from OPT): Harbour Rocks by ODE (about 0.25 km), Park Hyatt (about 0.27 km), and Rendezvous Hotel Sydney The Rocks and Sydney Harbour Hotel (both about a 4-minute walk). Distances are from booking listings, and we have no verified rates for 31 January 2027.
The Ship and How to Work It
Anthem is a big, entertainment-heavy Quantum Class ship, and its 2025 refit arrived without a big reveal. The drydock ran 22 March to 13 April 2025 in Singapore. Cruise Industry News reports technical and environmental upgrades and refreshed public areas, while Royal Caribbean Blog says no work list was announced and expected maintenance rather than an Allure-style amplification. We found no confirmed list of new venues, so don’t book on the promise of shiny new things. Full specs are on our Anthem of the Seas page.
Things to do
- Thrills: the North Star observation capsule, the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, the FlowRider surf simulator, and bumper cars.
- SeaPlex (Deck 15): roller skating and a circus school with trapeze and aerial skills.
- Two70: robot-screen shows at night, and by day craft workshops, board games and an internet café.
- Bars and shows: the Bionic Bar, Two70 Bar, North Star Bar and the Music Hall. The Royal Theatre ran We Will Rock You and The Gift in 2025, but we can’t confirm the February 2027 lineup.
- Quiet time: the Solarium is an adults-only pool area, though we found no stated minimum age.
Don’t expect a water park, an ice rink or laser tag. Anthem doesn’t have them.
Eating
Plenty of food is included, and the specialty restaurants cost extra (because of course they do). Included venues are the Main Dining Room, Solarium Bistro, Café Promenade (open 24/7), the Dog House on Deck 15, and the Windjammer and Café 270. Extra-cost options include Izumi Sushi, Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine, the five-course Chef’s Table, and Johnny Rockets. We found no verified specialty prices, so check the Cruise Planner. Chops Grille shows up on third-party listings but not on Royal Caribbean’s current guide, so don’t plan an anniversary around it.
Kids
Adventure Ocean is free for ages 3 to 12, with separate groups, but sources conflict on the exact age bands and teen clubs. We found no Anthem-specific bands, so confirm in your app before you pack for a toddler or teen.
The Ports
Treat the port list as very likely rather than guaranteed. Royal Caribbean warns that ports are “subject to change due to weather, safety or operational considerations.” Times below come from third-party timetables. All-aboard is earlier and is printed in your daily planner. See our Anthem itineraries page for the wider schedule.
| Date | Port | Listed times |
|---|---|---|
| Tue 2 – Wed 3 Feb | At sea | – |
| Thu 4 Feb | Picton | 09:00–18:00 |
| Fri 5 Feb | Napier | 08:30–18:00 |
| Sat 6 Feb | Wellington | 08:30–18:30 |
| Sun 7 Feb | Lyttelton (Christchurch) | 07:00–18:00 |
| Mon 8 Feb | Dunedin (Port Chalmers) | 07:00–18:00 |
| Tue 9 Feb | Fiordland scenic cruising | Check your daily planner |
| Wed 10 – Thu 11 Feb | At sea | – |
Port by port
- Picton: there’s no independent walk-off, and shuttles to town take about 5–10 minutes. Queues build near all-aboard. Blenheim wine country is about 27 km away. One private charter was NZ$595 per vehicle for up to four people over 5–6 hours, which is about NZ$149 each if four share.
- Napier: it’s a working port, so you ride a shuttle (about 5–10 minutes) to near the i-SITE at 100 Marine Parade. Older guides say it’s free, but we couldn’t confirm 2026-27 arrangements. Art Deco is the draw.
- Wellington: large ships use Aotea Quay, and walking out is discouraged. A free shuttle is reported, with guides disagreeing on 5–15 minutes. Check CentrePort for current details.
- Lyttelton: there’s no walk-off. Shuttles run to Lyttelton and to Christchurch’s Cashel Street, about 20 minutes by road. Allow about an hour for the first passengers to get off the port. The cruise lines price the shuttles, and we found no figure.
- Dunedin: ships dock at Port Chalmers, about 14 km from central Dunedin. Cruise lines usually arrange transfers to the Octagon or the museum.
Fiordland: don’t promise it
Fiordland is scenic cruising only, with no landing, and it’s the likeliest casualty of bad weather. Listings disagree on which sounds you’ll see, variously naming Dusky, Doubtful and Milford. A 12-night Anthem listing gives roughly an hour per sound. Ovation of the Seas saw all three sounds on a past voyage but skipped Port Chalmers in bad weather, so swaps happen. The weather gets the final vote, and it has never once been persuaded by a nicely written itinerary.
Conditions and Packing for This Season
Pack for a hot Sydney and a cooler, windier, wetter south. Sydney’s February rainfall averages about 117–119 mm at Observatory Hill, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with a mean minimum of 18.9 °C.
| Sydney in February | Figure |
|---|---|
| Typical high | about 26 °C |
| Typical low | about 19 °C |
| Sea temperature | about 23 °C |
| Wet-day chance | 26–30% |
| Daylight | 13h44m on 1 Feb |
The highs, lows and sea temperature come from long-term climate averages, not the Bureau. We found no official normals for the New Zealand ports, so we won’t invent city temperatures. For Milford Sound, two sources put February highs around 18 °C, and it’s one of New Zealand’s wettest places. Bring layers and a light waterproof jacket.
- Sydney: summer clothes, sunscreen, hat and swimwear.
- New Zealand: layers, a waterproof jacket, and shoes for wet decks and shuttle queues.
- Tasman crossings: seasickness remedies, and a lower, midship cabin if you’re prone.
The South Pacific cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April, so you’re inside it. The realistic risk isn’t a tropical hurricane but Tasman lows and strong winds causing late shuttles, skipped ports or reroutes.
Money
If you booked in Australian dollars, your daily service charges are already in the fare. Royal Caribbean Australia says voyages booked on its Australian site or priced in AUD include them for stateroom attendants and dining room staff. Spa and salon purchases carry an 18% service charge. Our tipping guide covers the rest.
| Item | Figure | Per |
|---|---|---|
| Gratuities, USD booking, non-suite | US$18.50 per day, US$203.50 over 11 nights | person |
| Gratuities, USD booking, suite | US$21.00 per day, US$231.00 over 11 nights | person |
| Deluxe drinks package (indicative, unverified) | AUD 140–160 per day | person |
| Refreshment package (indicative, unverified) | AUD 50–60 per day | person |
| Wi-Fi, US-market guides | about US$28.99 per day | device |
| NZ International Visitor Levy | NZ$100 | person |
For two people in a non-suite cabin on a USD booking, gratuities come to US$407, since the rates are per person. The drinks figures come from one blog, Mighty Travels, which says an 18% gratuity is built into them. We haven’t multiplied them out for the whole voyage, because the live quote in the Cruise Planner is the only number that will tell you what a package costs for your actual days. The same blog says every adult in a cabin must buy the same package and that onboard prices rise after a 72-hour cut-off. Wi-Fi is dynamically priced, and we have no Sydney price in AUD.
Whether the levy is charged per port or once per cruise is disputed, so check Immigration NZ’s fee tool before you pay. Shore excursion prices are the big unknown with five ports and a scenic day, so budget after you see the Cruise Planner.
Documents and Rules
This is an international sailing, so the domestic-cruise shortcuts don’t apply. A driver’s licence or Medicare card won’t do, so you need a passport book valid to at least 12 August 2027, with names matching across all documents. NZ Customs says to carry ID at all times, including on day trips.
New Zealand entry
- NZ Traveller Declaration: everyone completes it, including passengers who stay on board.
- Visa or NZeTA: required unless you hold an Australian or New Zealand passport. Australian permanent residents are listed as exempt from the levy, but confirm your status with Immigration NZ.
- Non-citizens: confirm your Australian visa allows re-entry on a round trip, via the Home Affairs site.
- Children: those travelling without a parent or guardian, or with a different surname, need extra documents. Royal Caribbean links a sample permission letter. Assume every child needs their own passport and the same NZ paperwork as adults.
Biosecurity and medication
Undeclared items risk an NZ$400 instant fine. Off the ship, you can take only commercially bottled water, chocolates, confectionery and biscuits. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, prepared meals (sandwiches included), dairy, eggs, honey, flowers, seeds and plants must stay aboard. Pepper spray counts as a weapon in NZ, and cash of NZ$10,000 or more needs a Border Cash Report.
- Carry prescription medicine in its original packaging with a prescription copy or doctor’s letter.
- Bring no more than 3 months’ supply, or 6 months for oral contraceptives.
- Controlled drugs must be declared on the Traveller Declaration and limited to 1 month’s supply.
- Pseudoephedrine cold and flu products count as controlled drugs, so keep them in hand luggage.
- Declare all medicines on Australia’s Incoming Passenger Card, and check the TGA for quantity limits.
Packing rules
Royal Caribbean bans irons and steamers, extension cords and power strips, tools over 7 inches, mace and pepper spray, and fireworks. Smart glasses can’t be used in the casino, spa, restrooms or youth facilities. Each guest of drinking age may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day, and boxed wine, beer and spirits are out. Our alcohol guide has the wider picture.
FAQ: Your Anthem of the Seas Questions Answered
Do I need a visa or NZeTA for a New Zealand cruise from Sydney?
Anyone without an Australian or New Zealand passport needs a current visa or NZeTA, according to NZ Customs and Royal Caribbean. Australian passport holders and NZ citizens need neither, but everyone completes the NZ Traveller Declaration, even if they never leave the ship. The NZeTA carries the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, so check Immigration NZ’s fee tool for the final amount.
What time do I need to be on board Anthem of the Seas in Sydney?
Two Royal Caribbean rules apply, and the earlier one wins: checked in at least 60 minutes before sailing, and on board no later than 90 minutes before port operations close. Sydney’s port-operations close time isn’t published, so there’s no single official clock time yet. If the listed 17:00 departure holds, the 60-minute rule means 16:00 at the very latest, and the 90-minute rule could be stricter. Anyone not checked in online must finish at the pier at least 2 hours before the published sailing time. Aim for the arrival slot on your mobile boarding pass, and confirm the cut-off with Royal Caribbean.
Are gratuities included on Royal Caribbean cruises from Australia?
Royal Caribbean Australia says voyages booked on its Australian site or priced in AUD already include daily service charges for stateroom attendants and dining room staff. Spa and salon purchases still carry an 18% service charge. Bookings made in US dollars follow the US rates of US$18.50 per person per day, or US$21 in suites. Check your booking confirmation to see which applies.
What ports does Anthem of the Seas visit on 1 February 2027?
Listings show Picton on 4 February, Napier on the 5th, Wellington on the 6th, Lyttelton (for Christchurch) on the 7th and Dunedin, docking at Port Chalmers, on the 8th, then Fiordland scenic cruising on 9 February. Royal Caribbean warns that ports are subject to change for weather, safety or operational reasons, and the exact sounds vary between listings, so check your Cruise Planner.
Can I bring wine on board Royal Caribbean from Sydney?
Royal Caribbean Australia lets each guest of drinking age bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day. Boxed wine, beer and spirits are out. Extra alcohol, and anything bought in port, is held by the ship and returned on the last day. The Australian page doesn’t state the drinking age, so check the Beverage Policy.
Where do I park for the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney?
There’s no parking at the terminal, and drop-off is capped at three minutes. Royal Caribbean points to Wilson Car Park nearby. Wilson’s cruise rates run from AU$25 per day at The Domain to AU$51 at Clocktower, prepaid online or in its app. For 12 calendar days that’s AU$300 to AU$612, though you should check how Wilson counts entry and exit days.
Will I get seasick crossing the Tasman?
It’s a genuine possibility. Cruisers describe Tasman crossings anywhere from “smooth as glass” to “terribly rough”, and there are no official swell statistics to give you odds. Anthem is a large ship with stabilisers, but that doesn’t guarantee a flat ride. Pack remedies and, if you’re prone, consider a lower, midship cabin.
The Bottom Line
This is a scenery-heavy itinerary that rewards early planning and mercilessly punishes the “I’ll sort it later” crowd. Sort your passport, NZeTA and Traveller Declaration first, then lock in parking, a hotel near your terminal and the excursions you care about. Treat Fiordland as a bonus rather than a promise, since weather decides. Confirm the final port list and your terminal in the Cruise Planner before you spend a cent on tours.
