Carnival Legend 16 Jan 2027 from Tampa: Full Prep Guide

Carnival Legend’s Saturday 16 January 2027 sailing is an 8-night round trip from Tampa, and it’s the one where your passport book becomes the main character. Reseller listings point to Costa Rica, Panama and Grand Cayman, a spicier menu than the usual Western Caribbean loop. Panama also brings a document rule that can leave you pacing the deck like a very well-fed ghost while everyone else goes ashore. Our database has no port list for this sailing, so treat the route below as probable until you’ve seen it in your Carnival booking.

Start Here

  • Now (93 days out): check every traveller’s passport book. It must be valid to at least 24 July 2027, six months after the cruise ends. Yes, that includes the one in the sock drawer.
  • Now: confirm the port list and terminal in your booking on carnival.com. Our database has no ports for this sailing.
  • Before you book flights: plan to be in Tampa on Friday 15 January, not landing on sailing morning and praying to the airline gods.
  • About 2 January 2027: online check-in is expected to open, 14 days out per third-party sources. Platinum and Diamond guests have historically got it about 48 hours earlier.
  • Before midnight Eastern, Friday 15 January: finish check-in and choose your Arrival Appointment.

What to Do Now and the Deadlines That Bite

The deadline that can wreck the trip is the passport, and the clock is already running. Everything else is a click in an app. A passport renewal is not a click in an app, so check the State Department’s current processing times before you assume you have slack. (Spoiler: assuming slack is how sad cruise stories begin.)

Check-in is where you pick an Arrival Appointment, in roughly 30-minute windows. Forum and blog reports say earlier check-in tends to get an earlier slot. Do it the moment it opens, while everyone else is still finding their login.

The Carnival Hub app also handles pre-cruise dinner reservations, Wi-Fi, spa and shore excursions. The exact day specialty dining and shows open for booking isn’t established, so check the Cruise Planner periodically. Carnival’s John Heald has said that “sold out” on Fahrenheit 555 often just meant bookings hadn’t opened (“We have not opened them yet”). Chef’s Table, by contrast, genuinely sells out, so book it early or the moment you board.

Embarkation Logistics

Which terminal Carnival will use isn’t confirmed, so don’t punch an address into the GPS until your booking or the Hub app names one. Port Tampa Bay runs cruise terminals #2 (651 Channelside Dr), #3 (815 Channelside Dr) and #6 (1333 McKay St). Sources disagree on which one Carnival favours: Cruise Hive says Terminal 2 is mainly Carnival, while Tourangie says Carnival usually uses Terminal 3 but sometimes Terminal 2. Terminals shift with ship traffic, so this is a guessing game you can skip entirely by checking.

Arrival times

  • Resellers list 3:30 PM against the Tampa day. It’s unclear whether that’s when boarding starts or when you sail, so your Arrival Appointment is the only time that counts.
  • One non-official guide puts typical Carnival windows at roughly 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM, depending on ship and port.
  • An older Carnival notice said you must be checked in 60 minutes before the published sailing time or you can’t sail. Confirm it’s current, because “can’t sail” is a heartbreaking phrase.
  • Arrive at the start of your window. Guests outside it may be asked to return, and nobody enjoys a sweaty lap of the car park.

Parking

Terminals 2 and 3 share the garage at 810 Channelside Dr, across from Terminal 3. Rates conflict by source: $17 per day, $17–18 per day, or $18 per day plus a $9.99 convenience fee (a December 2025 report). Prepay online so the system counts your days.

Scenario (estimate, not a quote)MathTotal
8 days at $18 plus fee8 × $18 = $144, plus $9.99about $154
9 calendar days at $18 plus fee9 × $18 = $162, plus $9.99about $172
Off-site, $8–15 per day with shuttle, 8 days8 × $8 to 8 × $15$64–$120

How the port counts days isn’t confirmed, hence two rows. Valet costs extra.

Getting there

  • Tampa airport (TPA): about 10 miles, 15–25 minutes. Rideshare is typically $25–40 and surge can push it higher. Taxis run $30–35+.
  • Flying into Orlando: about 90 miles to Tampa. A one-way rental runs roughly $50–70.
  • Carnival transfers: they run on embarkation day only. Check the Cruise Planner for the current price.
  • Night-before hotels: the Hampton Inn & Suites Ybor/Downtown (about 1 mile) has a package with up to 7 days’ parking, and an 8-night cruise may exceed that, so ask. The Tahitian Inn (about 5 miles) packages free shuttle with up to 2 weeks’ free parking. Embassy Suites Convention Center is walkable at about 0.5 miles but has no port shuttle. Verify every shuttle with the hotel, and check January prices yourself.

The Ship and How to Work It

Legend is a 2002-built Spirit Class ship, so pick your fun from what she actually has rather than what the shiny newer ships brag about. She holds 2,124 passengers and 930 crew across 13 decks, and her latest CDC Vessel Sanitation Program score is a tidy 100 out of 100 (inspected 6 March 2026). Details are on our Carnival Legend ship page.

In 2026 the ship spent 16 days at Grand Bahama Shipyard for technical maintenance and a new “From Sea to Shining Sea” bow crest. It returned to service from Miami on 20 May 2026. The reporting mentions no venue changes, so don’t arrive expecting a brand-new restaurant and then sulk at the buffet.

Eating

Included in fareExtra costPrice status not listed
Carnival Deli, Lido Marketplace, Guy’s Burger Joint (Deck 9), Seaday Brunch, BlueIguana Cantina, Swirls Chef’s Table, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi, Coffee Bar Truffles (main dining room), Unicorn Café

Chef’s Table is a multi-course dinner hosted by the Executive Master Chef. Main-dining seating options (set times versus flexible) aren’t confirmed, so check your booking.

Everything else

  • Pools and water: Camelot and Avalon pools, WaterWorks and the Green Thunder waterslide. Those are the confirmed water attractions, so adjust your expectations accordingly.
  • Bars (extra cost): Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, Alchemy Bar and RedFrog Rum Bar. RedFrog Pub and Billie’s Piano Bar have no price status listed.
  • Shows: Family Feud Live, The Punchliner Comedy Club and Playlist Productions are included. Cloud 9 Spa costs extra, and Medusa’s Lair Dance Club and Club Merlin Casino have no price status listed.
  • Adults-only: Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is listed as included. Age minimum and hours aren’t confirmed for this ship, though 18 is the fleet-wide figure.
  • Kids: Camp Ocean is included with three supervised youth areas. Fleet-wide guides give ages 2–11 (Penguins 2–5, Stingrays 6–8, Sharks 9–11), Circle C for 12–14 and Club O2 for 15–17, but verify for Legend.
  • App: the Hub works in Airplane Mode with no roaming fees, though chat carries a small fee. Guests 15 and under need guardian consent to activate it.

The Ports

Three ports are listed by resellers, none is confirmed by our own data, and the Colón day is the murkiest of the lot. The Legend’s Western Caribbean sailing on 13 Feb 2027 (Grand Cayman, Roatán, Belize, Cozumel) is a different route, so don’t mix them up. Times below are listed ship arrival and departure. All-aboard is earlier and printed in the daily planner.

DatePortShip in port (listed)Hours
Tue 19 JanPuerto Limón, Costa Rica11:00 AM–7:00 PM8
Wed 20 JanColón, Panama9:00 AM–6:30 PM9.5
Fri 22 JanGeorge Town, Grand Cayman8:00 AM–4:00 PM8

Puerto Limón, Costa Rica

Stay close to the ship, because the 7:00 PM departure punishes ambition. The Hernán Garrón Salazar terminal was refurbished in 2019, and downtown is across the street. Parque Vargas, Pasaje Cristal and a souvenir market are nearby, and Playa Bonita is a short beach stop.

  • Skip: San José. It’s at least 4 hours each way, which is a long time to watch a bus window.
  • Nature tours: Veragua Rainforest, Tortuguero canals and sloth sanctuaries get mentioned, but what Carnival sells and at what price isn’t confirmed. Use the ship or a vetted operator.
  • Safety: the US State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” for crime (issued 2 April 2026). Avoid poorly lit streets and beaches at night.

Colón, Panama

Book Colón as a guided day, and don’t plan your heart around a lock transit. One reseller labels the day “Panama Canal” while others say “Colón,” and nobody says whether it’s a full transit, partial transit or just a port call. On a different Legend sailing in February 2026, Carnival said the ship would not transit and the terminal sat about 10 miles from the canal. Wait for Carnival’s wording before you buy the commemorative hat.

  • Terminal: most ships use Colón 2000, about 1 mile (1.5 km) from downtown. Colón is “not the safest area for walking,” so stay in the terminal and shopping zone.
  • Guided options: Gatún Locks and Agua Clara visitor area, Gatún Lake, Portobelo forts, an Emberá village visit, the Panama Canal Railway, and Miraflores Locks and Panama City. Prices aren’t established.
  • Panama City: just under an hour by road. Against a 6:30 PM sailing, that’s a ship-excursion day.
  • Money: US dollars are used day to day. Bring small bills.
  • Safety: the US rates Panama Level 2 for crime (issued 19 August 2026) and doesn’t single out Colón. Canada asks for a high degree of caution in Colón.

George Town, Grand Cayman

This is a tender port with an early 4:00 PM departure, so budget your return like it matters, because it does. Ships anchor offshore, and tenders land at one of three terminals on Harbour Drive. Allow about 60 minutes to get back aboard and a minimum of 4 hours ashore. Tendering can be cancelled in rough seas, which January fronts make plausible.

  • Walkable: the waterfront has duty-free shopping and restaurants, good for 1–2 hours.
  • Seven Mile Beach: needs a taxi or bus. Agree a return plan before you go.
  • Also on offer: Stingray City (a 3–4 hour boat trip), the USS Kittiwake wreck, Crystal Caves, Pedro St. James and the botanic gardens.
  • Money: one Cayman dollar is about US$1.20, and US dollars are widely accepted. Celebrity suggests 10–15% in restaurants and $5–10 per person for tour guides. That’s a suggestion, not a rule.
  • Rules: the US rates the Cayman Islands Level 1 (21 May 2026). Any ammunition is illegal, even a spent casing, and cannabis is banned even with a prescription. Traffic drives on the left.

Conditions and Packing for a January Sailing

Hurricanes aren’t the January worry; Gulf cold fronts are. The Atlantic hurricane season ends 30 November, so January sits outside it, though NHC notes activity “sometimes occurs before and after these dates,” so don’t promise zero risk. Fronts cross the Gulf every few days. In past Januaries NHC offshore forecasts showed 9–13 ft seas (January 2022) and 7–11 ft (January 2024) in the northwest Gulf.

That isn’t your route, but it shows what a front can do when it’s in a mood. With sea days 2 and 3 right out of Tampa, the first stretch is the likeliest bumpy one. That’s an inference, not a forecast.

PlaceJanuary high / lowRain chance
Tampaabout 70°F / 51°Fabout 25%
Grand Caymanabout 82°F / 76°Fabout 45%
Limón and ColónNo reliable figures; tropical, humid and showery

Tampa and Cayman numbers are four-year historic averages from reseller sheets. Costa Rica’s IMN and Panama’s weather service have real numbers if you want them.

  • Tampa and Gulf days: layers, a light jacket and long trousers. Decks are windier than land.
  • Ports: swimwear, light breathable clothes, sun protection and a compact rain jacket.
  • Rainforest tours: closed shoes and insect repellent.
  • Seasickness: a midship, low-deck cabin and motion remedies.

This is peak Caribbean territory: SmarterTravel says May or early-December cruises cost 30–40% less than January to March. Don’t expect a bargain-bin season.

Money

The fare is only the opening act of the bill, so price the extras per person before you commit. Third-party rates for Wi-Fi are 2026 figures, so confirm them in the Cruise Planner. We haven’t printed a fare because reseller snapshots vary by site and date. Check the live price.

Wi-Fi Premium, prepurchase / onboard$25.50 / $30 per day$204.00 / $240

The 8-day estimates assume eight billed days. Confirm whether Carnival bills eight or nine, and how children are charged for gratuities. Gratuities rose by $1 a day on 2 April 2026 (from $16 and $18), and you can adjust them at your discretion. Our tipping guide covers what extra to hand over, if any.

Where the value is

  • Cheers!: every adult in the cabin must buy it, you can’t buy a single day, and it covers up to 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hours. Drinks priced at $20 or less are covered, and pricier ones get a 25% discount. Prepaying saves $6 a day all-in, or $48 over eight days. Count your daily cocktails before buying, and be honest, because the spreadsheet will know.
  • Bottomless Bubbles: at $14.39 a day it pays off only if you drink several sodas daily.
  • Wi-Fi: prepurchasing saves $3.60–$4.50 a day, and plans must cover the whole cruise.
  • Steakhouse: other Carnival ships list Fahrenheit 555 at $52 per adult and $15 per child 11 and under. Legend’s price isn’t confirmed. The buffet, Guy’s and the cantina are free, so treat it as a one-night splurge.
  • Wine: see the bring-alcohol guide and the allowance below.

Shore excursion prices for all three ports aren’t established. Panama and Costa Rica tours will cost more than a Cayman beach day, so look in the Cruise Planner.

Documents and Rules

Bring a passport book and you can skip most of the paperwork anxiety. On same-homeport U.S. cruises, Carnival accepts several documents, including passport card, birth certificate plus photo ID and enhanced driver’s licences. Panama is the party pooper: only a passport book lets you go ashore. Other WHTI-compliant documents let you sail but you must stay aboard in Panama.

  • Validity: Carnival’s Panama notice says all guests, infants included, need a book valid at least six months after the cruise ends. That’s 24 July 2027 here.
  • Photo ID: required for guests 16 and older. Names on tickets must match photo ID.
  • Passport card: not valid for flying home from overseas, so a book is the safer choice anyway.
  • Refunds: on the February 2026 Legend sailing, prepaid Carnival Panama tours were refunded for guests without passports. Not confirmed for this sailing.
  • Minors: birth certificates must come from a government agency, and photocopies are accepted. Puerto Rico birth certificates issued before 1 July 2010 aren’t accepted. If a parent isn’t sailing, Carnival strongly recommends an original signed letter.
  • Non-U.S. citizens: contact the embassies of the countries you’ll visit. Carry your passport plus any U.S. visa or green card. Don’t assume the “green card only” shortcut works with Panama on the route.
  • Entry fees: none established for Costa Rica, Panama or Cayman. Check each government’s pages.

Packing rules that get bags confiscated

  • Alcohol: guests must be 21. On embarkation day only, each adult may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne. Taking it into a dining venue costs a $15 corkage fee per bottle.
  • Soft drinks: up to 12 sealed cans or cartons, plus a small cooler (no larger than 12 × 12 × 12 in) with non-alcoholic drinks or medication.
  • Medication: carry it on yourself, not in checked bags.
  • Prohibited: marijuana, cannabis and CBD even where legal, plus weapons, candles, incense, hoverboards and knives. Per an April 2026 update, also Bluetooth speakers, routers and satellite phones.
  • Restricted: irons, steamers, coffee makers and hot plates. Drones must be declared at embarkation and held by security.
  • Bags: no more than 50 lbs, and no rolling “Hulken” totes. Wagons must be folded at embarkation and debarkation.
  • Smoking: staterooms and balconies carry a $500 charge per violation.

FAQ: Your Carnival Legend January 2027 Questions

Do I need a passport for a Carnival cruise from Tampa that stops in Panama?

Yes, a passport book, if you want to leave the ship in Panama. Carnival says other WHTI documents, including a passport card, let you sail but you must stay on board there. Its Panama notice says all guests, infants included, need a book valid at least six months after the cruise ends, which means 24 July 2027 for this sailing. Confirm on Carnival’s help pages.

When does online check-in open for a 16 January 2027 Carnival cruise?

Third-party sources put it at 14 days before sailing, about 2 January 2027, closing at midnight Eastern the night before. Platinum and Diamond guests historically got it 48 hours earlier, around 31 December, but that’s unconfirmed for 2027. Check-in is where you pick your Arrival Appointment, so confirm the dates in your booking or the Carnival Hub app.

Does Carnival Legend go through the Panama Canal on this cruise?

Not confirmed. Reseller listings show a 9:00 AM–6:30 PM day at Colón, Panama, and one labels it “Panama Canal.” None says whether it’s a full transit, partial transit or a port call. On a different Legend sailing in February 2026, Carnival said the ship wouldn’t transit. Don’t book anything around locks until Carnival confirms.

How much are Carnival gratuities for an 8-night cruise?

Since 2 April 2026, gratuities are $17 per person per day in standard staterooms and $19 in suites. Assuming eight charged days, that’s $136 per person in a standard room ($272 for two) or $152 per person in a suite ($304 for two). They’re per person, not per cabin. Confirm whether Carnival bills eight or nine days and how children are charged.

Can I bring wine on Carnival Legend?

Per Carnival’s help page, each guest 21 or older may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne, on embarkation day only. Beer and spirits aren’t part of the allowance. If you open your bottle in a dining venue, there’s a $15 corkage fee per bottle. Anything over the allowance risks being taken at screening.

Where does Carnival Legend dock in Tampa and what does parking cost?

The terminal isn’t confirmed for this sailing. Port Tampa Bay’s cruise terminals are #2 (651 Channelside Dr), #3 (815 Channelside Dr) and #6 (1333 McKay St), and sources split between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 for Carnival, so check your booking or the Hub app. Port garage parking is reported at $17–18 a day, and one December 2025 report adds a $9.99 convenience fee. Eight days at $18 plus the fee is about $154, and nine calendar days would be about $172. Prepay online to have the days calculated.

What’s the weather like on a January Tampa cruise to Panama?

Tampa averages about a 70°F high and 51°F low in January, with roughly a 25% rain chance. Grand Cayman is about 82°F and 76°F, with roughly 45%. Limón and Colón are tropical, humid and showery, and we have no reliable figures to quote. The Atlantic hurricane season ends 30 November, so January falls outside it, but winter cold fronts can roughen the Gulf, so pack layers and motion remedies.

The Bottom Line

This sailing is a good one if you’re organised, and a sulky one if you’re not. The probable Costa Rica, Panama and Grand Cayman route is a step up from the standard loop, but the port list, the nature of the Colón day and the embarkation terminal are all unconfirmed. Get a passport book valid to 24 July 2027 into every traveller’s hand now, confirm the itinerary in your booking, and be in Tampa on Friday 15 January.

Budget the extras per person (gratuities alone are $136 each over eight days), and treat the Cayman tender and Colón ground day as the two places where planning actually pays off. Check back on the Carnival Legend ship page as the date gets closer.
