It’s 15 October, and Spirit of Discovery leaves Portsmouth this Saturday on a 20-night Mediterranean loop. If you’re reading this with a packed suitcase and a smug expression, congratulations. If not, relax: seven more sailings follow, running through to a 4 February 2027 departure. Together they make a sort of “escape the British winter” buffet, with the Med in the early weeks and the Canaries and Madeira doing the heavy lifting after that.
So, is this ship, in this season, on these routes, right for you? Let’s find out. For the full departure list, see our Spirit of Discovery itinerary page.

The Ship: Boutique, Balconied and Strictly Grown-Up
Spirit of Discovery was the first new ship Meyer Werft built for Saga, and both the builder and Saga say every cabin has its own balcony. There are no inside cabins to wince about. With 999 guests and 530 crew, there’s roughly one crew member for every two passengers (999 ÷ 530 is about 1.9 passengers per crew member). Compared with a 5,000-berth floating retail park, it feels like a hotel that happens to move.
Saga’s rule is that its ships are exclusively for guests aged 50 and over, and its ocean cruise FAQ says a travelling companion can be 40 or over. If you want teenagers, kids’ clubs or a waterslide, wrong ship, and wrong planet. If you want a library, a spa with a hydrotherapy pool, a theatre (The Playhouse, with raked seating for over 400) and a bed you can reach without joining a queue, welcome aboard. Solo travellers get 109 single cabins, all with a balcony, which is rarer than it should be.
It’s a good fit if you like 14 to 20 nights away, would rather not fly, and enjoy the idea of your car’s boot being the baggage limit. It’s less of a fit if you want a party ship or a big-name headliner every night.
The Eight Sailings and Which to Pick
A caveat first. Our own database has no port lists for these sailings, so the ports and times below come from Cruise Timetables, which says it samples Saga’s website. Saga’s own calendar page shows only names and dates. Itineraries can change, so check with Saga before booking.
- 17 Oct, 20 nights, Charms of Croatia and the Mediterranean: Gibraltar, Valletta, Split, Zadar, Dubrovnik, Trapani, Alicante, Lisbon. Eight ports, and 11 of the 19 full days have no listed port.
- 6 Nov, 16 nights, Jewels of the Mediterranean: Gibraltar, Port Mahon, Ajaccio, Monaco, Marseille, Barcelona, Tangier.
- 22 Nov, 14 nights, Canary Island Vistas: Funchal, La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Arrecife, Lisbon.
- 6 Dec, 14 nights, Best of the Canaries: Funchal (overnight), La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Arrecife, Lisbon.
- 20 Dec, 17 nights, Christmas in the Canaries: Lisbon, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Tenerife, Arrecife, Funchal (New Year’s Eve), Vigo.
- 6 Jan, 14 nights, Casablanca and Canary Island Duo: Cadiz, Casablanca, La Palma, Tenerife, Funchal (overnight).
- 20 Jan, 15 nights, Canary Island Sunshine: Lisbon, Arrecife, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Funchal (overnight).
- 4 Feb, 16 nights, A Taste of Morocco and Historic Spain: Gibraltar, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Tangier, Cadiz, Porto.
My picks. Want maximum sightseeing? The 6 Nov sailing has five ports in five days (Port Mahon, Ajaccio, Monaco, Marseille, Barcelona, 12 to 16 November), so it’s the most “wake up somewhere new” option. First-timer who wants warmth? Take 6 Dec: it has the longest Funchal stay, 28.5 hours from 08:00 on 10 December to 12:30 on 11 December. Craving a different continent? The 6 Jan sailing is the one with Casablanca. The 17 Oct Croatia sailing is the one for people who think “Dubrovnik in August” sounds like a punishment.
Ports and What’s Genuinely Worth Doing
Funchal, Madeira. Ride the cable car, wander the Mercado dos Lavradores, and, if you’ve the nerve, take the wicker toboggan down the hill. The 20 Dec sailing arrives at 08:00 on 31 December and has a listed departure of 01:00, so you see in the New Year in port. Funchal’s fireworks are famous and ships crowd the bay for them. (Claims about world records vary by source, so I’ll stay out of that argument.)
Tenerife. Mount Teide, at 3,715 metres, is the headline act. Allow for the cable car and check conditions; it’s an excursion that eats most of the port day.
La Palma and La Gomera. La Palma is green, walkable and calm, and suits anyone who likes hills more than high-rises. La Gomera, on the 22 Nov sailing only, has the laurel forests of Garajonay and the whistled language Silbo Gomero. It’s a good place to sit in a café and see no one with a selfie stick.
Lanzarote (Arrecife). Volcanic landscapes and César Manrique’s architecture. Book an excursion or taxi tour; the sights aren’t in the port.
Lisbon. Tram rides, pastéis de nata in Belém, and zero regrets. On the 20 Dec sailing, the 23 December call runs 09:00 to 20:00, so you get an evening there.
Casablanca. The Hassan II Mosque is the star, and guided visits are available for non-Muslims. Go in with a plan: on the 6 Jan sailing, the 11 January call is 08:00 to 17:00.
Barcelona (6 Nov sailing). You have 08:00 to 17:00 on 16 November. Pick one big thing (Sagrada Família with a pre-booked slot), then do the rest on foot.
Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar (17 Oct sailing). Three days running (26 to 28 October), with crowds that should be thinner than in peak summer. Walk Dubrovnik’s city walls early, and check their current opening hours before you go. Split’s Diocletian’s Palace is a living town centre, and Zadar is wonderfully quirky.
Conditions and Packing: Biscay First, Sunshine Second
Every one of these sailings starts and ends with a run across the Bay of Biscay. Sometimes it’s a millpond, and sometimes it isn’t. It’s worth being honest: on 4 November 2023, Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion in heavy weather in the Bay of Biscay. More than 100 people were injured and one passenger later died from his injuries, according to the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch’s final report (6/2026, published 11 March 2026). That was an extreme event, not a typical crossing, but it’s a fair reminder that autumn and winter Biscay deserves respect. Hold the handrails, take the crew’s announcements seriously, bring seasickness remedies and pick a midships cabin if motion bothers you.
Weather. According to bestdateweather.com, average daytime highs in the Canary Islands are about 23°C in November, 21°C in December and 20°C in January. Madeira runs a couple of degrees cooler: about 21°C in November, 19°C in December and 18°C in January. In other words, it’s warm enough for sundresses at lunch and a cardigan after sunset. Portsmouth, on the other hand, is Portsmouth.
Pack:
- A proper waterproof for departure and arrival days, plus a fleece or wrap for evenings.
- Layers, not bulk: you’ll swing from Biscay chill to island sun in a week.
- Comfortable shoes with grip for Dubrovnik and Split’s polished stone, and Funchal’s slopes.
- Sun cream, even in December in the Canaries.
- Seasickness tablets or wristbands, just in case.
- If you’re on the Casablanca or Tangier sailings, modest clothing for religious sites.
Money: Where the Value Is
The fares below are the “from” prices listed by Cruise Timetables, which samples Saga’s pricing, so treat them as snapshots. ROL Cruise lists the Christmas sailing at £7,999 per person, based on two adults sharing a twin cabin; confirm the basis for the others with Saga. No fares are listed for the 17 Oct, 6 Nov or 22 Nov sailings.
| Sailing | “From” fare | Per night |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Dec, 14 nights | £3,768 | about £269 |
| 6 Jan, 14 nights | £4,030 | about £288 |
| 20 Jan, 15 nights | £4,324 | about £288 |
| 4 Feb, 16 nights | £5,296 | about £331 |
| 20 Dec, 17 nights | £7,999 | about £471 |
Look at that Christmas line. The 20 Dec sailing is just three nights longer than 6 Dec, but its lead-in fare is £4,231 higher (£7,999 minus £3,768). That’s the price of Christmas dinner somewhere warm. If you can’t move the dates, fine. If you can, 6 Dec is the value pick; 6 Jan costs £262 more than 6 Dec for the same 14 nights, and you get Casablanca for it.
What’s in the fare helps the maths. Saga says its ocean fares include all-inclusive drinks in bars, lounges and restaurants (premium wines cost extra), on-board gratuities, free Wi-Fi (which it says can be intermittent), speciality restaurants at no extra charge, and a chauffeur service to the port with porterage. Confirm the current terms with Saga, and read our tipping guide for the general picture. Always add up the extras before comparing.
Timing: When to Book and What Sells First
The 17 Oct sailing leaves in two days, and 6 Nov is 22 days out. These are last-minute-only options. The 22 Nov sailing is 38 days away, and 20 Dec is 66.
Christmas and New Year sailings tend to be the most in-demand, because there’s nothing more appealing than swapping a British December for Funchal fireworks. If that’s you, ring Saga now, not in November. January departures (6 Jan and 20 Jan) may be easier to book, so ask Saga about current availability. And since the ship comes into Portsmouth at around 07:00 (08:00 on 6 December) and sets off again at 17:00 on the same day, back-to-back voyages are physically possible: 6 Dec to 20 Dec, or 6 Jan to 20 Jan, for instance. Ask Saga whether they’ll package them.
FAQ: Spirit of Discovery Autumn and Winter Cruises
Is Spirit of Discovery adults-only?
Effectively, yes. Saga’s ocean cruise FAQ says its ships are exclusively for over-50s, and that a travelling companion can be over 40. It also says that for bookings with Saga’s optional travel insurance, the lead booker must be over 50. No children’s facilities, no school-holiday chaos. Check Saga’s current age policy before booking.
Do I need to fly for Spirit of Discovery cruises from Portsmouth?
No. Every sailing in this period starts and ends in Portsmouth, so you can drive, take a train, or use the chauffeur service Saga advertises. That removes airports, luggage limits and flight delays. The trade-off is days at sea getting south: the 6 Dec sailing, for instance, doesn’t reach Funchal until 10 December.
Is the Bay of Biscay rough in November?
It can be. Many crossings are calm, but winter storms are a known risk. In November 2023, Spirit of Discovery lost propulsion in heavy weather there, per the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch’s final report published in March 2026. Bring seasickness remedies, choose a midships cabin if you’re prone, and expect crew announcements if conditions turn. You cross the Bay at both ends of each sailing.
What is Spirit of Discovery’s CDC inspection score?
Our records show 96 out of 100 from an inspection on 11 February 2025. The CDC treats 86 and above as satisfactory. That’s the latest on our file, so it’s over a year old. You can check any new result in our CDC inspection lookup.
Is a Canary Islands cruise worth it at Christmas?
If you want sun without cooking a turkey, yes. The 20 Dec sailing spends Christmas Day at sea, calls at Funchal on New Year’s Eve, and works out at about £471 a night at the listed “from” fare. That’s a lot more than the 6 Dec sailing at about £269 a night. Whether the premium’s worth it depends on how much you value the date.
How warm are the Canary Islands in December and January?
Expect daytime highs of about 21°C in December and 20°C in January in the Canaries, and about 19°C and 18°C in Madeira, according to bestdateweather.com. It’s pleasant sightseeing weather rather than a beach-tan guarantee, and evenings can feel cool.
The Bottom Line
Spirit of Discovery suits 50-plus travellers who like long, unhurried, no-fly voyages, with balconies for all and a crew-to-guest ratio that lets you be fussed over. Pick the 17 Oct or 6 Nov sailings for Mediterranean culture, 6 Dec for the best value, 6 Jan for the Casablanca twist, and 20 Dec only if Christmas on the water is worth the premium. Respect the Biscay, pack in layers, and verify every port list and fare with Saga before you commit.
