Norwegian Breakaway is having an identity crisis this autumn, and I respect it. Between now and late January she’s Boston-based for three more departures (Oct 18 to Nov 1), which timetables show as Halifax-and-Bermuda sailings. Then she does a 14-night one-way sprint from New England chill to Caribbean sunshine, then becomes a New Orleans workhorse doing Western Caribbean laps. It’s one ship with three personalities, so the real question is which version of her suits you. Departure dates and fares are on the Norwegian Breakaway itineraries page. This piece is the opinionated companion to that listing.

The Ship: Big, Busy and Freshly Spruced
With 3,969 passengers and 1,595 crew, that’s roughly 2.5 guests per crew member on paper. This is a big-ship experience: lots of restaurants, lots of bars, and lines at the popular ones. Our Norwegian Breakaway ship page has the full profile.
The 2025 refit is the news. She spent roughly February 19 to March 14, 2025 at the Damen yard in Brest, France. Silver Screen Bistro, a cinema-meets-dining venue, replaced the Spiegel Tent. Horizon Park, an outdoor spot with a live-music stage, also arrived. Coverage of Norwegian’s announcement also had Cagney’s Steakhouse expanding into the old Moderno Churrascaria space and Ocean Blue becoming a seafood restaurant called Palomar. Guides also praise the Waterfront, a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade lined with bars and restaurants, though that guide dates from 2022.
She suits: multigenerational groups, friends who want variety, and anyone who wants a short getaway without a flight, since Boston and New Orleans are both drive-to ports for plenty of people. She suits less: anyone who wants hush and space. A ship this size is a party with a hull.
The Itineraries: Which One to Pick
Our database is missing port lists for two of the three routings, so I checked third-party timetables. Treat all times below as provisional, because listings differ by an hour or so, and confirm with Norwegian before you book.
Boston to Halifax and Bermuda (7 nights, Oct 18, Oct 25, Nov 1). Here’s where the paperwork gets dramatic. Our database lists a Maine-and-Canada routing for these dates (Portland, Bar Harbor, Eastport, Halifax). Norwegian’s own announcement for Breakaway’s Boston season says its Canada and New England sailings run from late August to mid-October, with seven-day Bermuda voyages running through November and a day in Halifax. The timetables I found put the Maine-and-Canada routings on the earlier Oct 4 and Oct 11 departures, and show Halifax and Bermuda for Oct 18, Oct 25 and Nov 1. Because our listing and those sources disagree, check the port list for your date on Norwegian’s site before you pay. On the Oct 18 sailing, per the timetables, she leaves Boston at 4 p.m., reaches Halifax on Oct 20, and docks at Royal Naval Dockyard (the Kings Wharf area), Bermuda on Oct 22 around 10 a.m. She stays overnight until about 3 p.m. on Oct 23, then returns to Boston at 8 a.m. on Oct 25. That’s three sea days and two ports. Pick it if you want Bermuda with no flights and a night in port.
Boston to New Orleans (14 nights, Nov 8). This is the only departure of its kind. Our database has no port list for it, so these stops come from third-party timetables. Confirm them with Norwegian:
- Nov 9 to 11: three straight sea days
- Nov 12: St. Thomas
- Nov 13: St. Lucia
- Nov 14: Grenada
- Nov 15: sea day
- Nov 16: Curaçao (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.)
- Nov 17: Aruba
- Nov 18: sea day
- Nov 19: Grand Cayman
- Nov 20 to 21: two more sea days
- Nov 22: arrive in New Orleans at 7 a.m.
That makes six ports and seven sea days. Pick it if you love sea days and want to skip a New England winter. Budget a one-way flight home.
New Orleans round-trip (7 nights, Nov 22 to Jan 24 departures). The timetables I checked (November, December and one January listing) show Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye and Costa Maya, with two sea days. In the Nov 22 pattern that’s Cozumel on Tuesday, Roatán on Wednesday, Harvest Caye on Thursday and Costa Maya on Friday. You return on Sunday at 7 a.m. One timetable lists the Dec 6 departure without Costa Maya, so check that date. The holiday sailings are a fun quirk. Nov 22 puts Harvest Caye on Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26) and Dec 20 has Costa Maya on Christmas Day. Dec 27 spends New Year’s Eve at Harvest Caye.
Ports: What’s Genuinely Worth Doing
Bermuda. The overnight stay is the best thing on the Boston sailings. Ferries run from the Dockyard to Hamilton in about 20 minutes and to St. George’s in under 40. One guide quoted transport passes at $19 for a day and $31.50 for two consecutive days. Horseshoe Bay is about a 15-minute drive away, and one guide listed a $16-per-person shuttle. Snorkelers should look at Tobacco Bay, and the National Museum of Bermuda is a walk from the port.
Halifax. It’s a compact city. Pier 21, the immigration museum, is right at the dock (there’s an admission fee). The waterfront stroll is about 4 kilometres, and the Citadel is worth timing for the Noon Day Gun. Peggy’s Cove is roughly a 45-minute bus ride each way, so book a tour.
Harvest Caye. The ship docks at a covered pier, and a free tram runs to the pool and beach. The island has a zip line from the lighthouse, and a 15-minute ferry to the town of Placencia. A 2026 guide says your drink package doesn’t work ashore, and that vendors want a card or US dollars.
Roatán. The island sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, so snorkelling is the draw. Catamaran and reef trips quoted in guides ran about four hours from $79 to $99. Guides say Norwegian ships usually use the Coxen Hole terminal rather than Mahogany Bay, so confirm yours.
Costa Maya. You get a short day, 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Chacchoben ruins are about an hour from the port, with ship excursions quoted from around $90 per person. That’s tight against the departure time, so go with a ship-organised tour that guarantees your return. A beach day in Mahahual is the lower-stress option.
Conditions and Packing
This autumn gives you two climates, and the 14-night sailing gives you both in one suitcase. Environment Canada’s 1991–2020 normals for Halifax’s airport put October’s average high at about 14°C (57°F) and the average low near 5°C (41°F), with measurable rain on roughly 13 days of the month. That’s Nova Scotia’s polite way of telling you to bring a jacket. Late October and early November run cooler than that average. Sources disagreed by a few degrees on Bermuda, but all put its highs in the 70s°F. Pack layers, a windproof jacket and sensible shoes for the Boston sailings.
The Caribbean is a different story. Four-year averages for late November and early December put Cozumel highs around 81 to 83°F and Roatán around 81 to 82°F, with Roatán the rainier of the two. Pack a swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen and a light rain jacket. On the 14-night sailing, wear the coat to the ship and the swimsuit by St. Thomas. The first three days are at sea in the North Atlantic in November, so pack motion-sickness remedies.
Hurricane season runs until November 30. Most activity is between mid-August and mid-October, but the Nov 8 and Nov 22 sailings still fall inside it. Buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption.
Money: Where the Value Is
Fares. Prices move constantly, and listings for the same sailing disagreed by hundreds of dollars. One reseller showed a 14-night interior from $849 per person before taxes and port fees. That’s a marked-down price, not a saving figure. The listing’s “was” price was $1,698 per person, and the saving of $849 happens to equal the new fare. That works out to about $61 per night per person. Another listing showed $1,069 per person including taxes and fees, about $76 per night. Always compare on the same basis.
Daily charges. As of May 2026, reports put Norwegian’s service charge at $20 per person per day in standard staterooms and $25 in The Haven and most suites. On seven days that’s about $140 per person ($280 for two) in a standard cabin, and double that on the 14-night. If your Free at Sea deal includes drinks, the prepaid gratuity on that package is $28.50 per person per day on sailings of six nights or more. That’s about $200 per person over seven days. For who gets tipped extra, see our cruise ship tipping guide.
Where the value is. The New Orleans sailings can save a flight if you’re within driving distance, which is the cheapest upgrade in cruising. The 14-night adds the flight home and two weeks of daily charges, so add up the whole bill rather than falling for the per-night number.
Timing: When to Book and What Sells Out
The Oct 18 Bermuda sailing is six days away as I write, so you’re booking from whatever inventory is left. If you’re set on it, call your agent now. The Nov 8 14-night is the only departure of its kind, so there’s no second chance. The holiday-week New Orleans sailings (Nov 22, Dec 20 and Dec 27) are the ones I’d book first, since holiday weeks tend to fill earliest. If you’re flying home from the one-way sailing, book flights once your sailing is confirmed and pick an afternoon departure, as you disembark at 7 a.m.
FAQ: Norwegian Breakaway This Autumn
Is Norwegian Breakaway good for a first-time cruiser?
For most people, yes. With 3,969 passengers there’s plenty to do, and the 2025 refit added venues like Silver Screen Bistro and Horizon Park. The trade-off is crowds at peak times. First-timers should pick a seven-night sailing from Boston or New Orleans rather than the 14-night, which has seven sea days and needs a one-way flight home.
Does Norwegian Breakaway sail to the Bahamas this fall?
Not on anything I found. Third-party timetables show the Boston sailings heading for Halifax and Bermuda, the 14-night crossing calling at St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Grenada, Curaçao, Aruba and Grand Cayman, and the New Orleans runs visiting Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye and Costa Maya. Our own database has no port list for the 14-night or New Orleans sailings. Itineraries can change, so check Norwegian’s listing for your exact date.
Do I need a passport for a Boston to Bermuda cruise?
U.S. citizens can often sail closed-loop round-trips with a certified birth certificate and photo ID, but a passport is the safer bet. You’d need one if you miss the ship or have to fly home. The one-way Boston-to-New Orleans sailing isn’t a round-trip, so bring a passport. Confirm with Norwegian or CBP.
Is November a bad time to cruise the Caribbean because of hurricanes?
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. November sailings sit at the tail end, but storms can still change itineraries. Buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, and watch the National Hurricane Center in the week before you sail.
What is Norwegian Breakaway’s CDC sanitation score?
Our database shows 99 out of 100 from the most recent CDC Vessel Sanitation Program inspection on April 26, 2026. A score of 86 or higher is a pass. You can check any ship yourself with our CDC cruise ship inspection lookup.
How much is the daily service charge on a Norwegian cruise?
As of May 2026, reports put it at $20 per person per day for standard staterooms and $25 for The Haven and most suites. If it’s charged for seven days, that’s about $140 per person, or $280 for two people sharing a standard cabin. The drink-package gratuity is separate. Confirm the figures on your booking.
How many sea days are on the Boston to New Orleans cruise?
Seven of the 14 days, per third-party timetables. That’s three straight sea days after leaving Boston on Nov 9 to 11, single days on Nov 15 and Nov 18, and two more on Nov 20 and 21. Six port stops fill the rest, and the ship arrives in New Orleans at 7 a.m. on Nov 22.
The Bottom Line
Pick the Boston-to-Bermuda sailings if you want a short, flight-free trip with a night in port and don’t mind packing a coat. Pick the 14-night if sea days are a feature rather than a flaw and you can handle the one-way logistics. Pick the New Orleans runs for easy, repeatable Western Caribbean beach-and-ruins itineraries, and watch the holiday weeks. Whichever you choose, the ship is freshly refitted and posted a 99 on her latest CDC inspection. Check port lists with Norwegian before you pay, because our own data had gaps and the third-party timetables disagreed in places.
