You’ve watched every cruise vlog on YouTube. You’ve read the Reddit threads about norovirus outbreaks at 2 AM. You know which ships got pulled from service and which captain literally abandoned his passengers. But do you actually know your stuff — or are you just vibes-based?
We built a database of 163 cruise ships, scraped CDC inspection records, crunched environmental scores, and dug into crew satisfaction ratings. Along the way, we stumbled on some facts that genuinely shocked us. So we turned them into a trivia game, because apparently that’s what we do now.
Here’s a taste of what’s inside — and why most self-proclaimed cruise experts score way lower than they expect.
The 8 Categories of Cruise Knowledge
Our trivia game pulls from eight categories, each one designed to test a different corner of your cruise brain. Some are fun. Some are genuinely unsettling. All of them will make you a smarter cruiser.
Ship Stats — Think you know your gross tonnage from your passenger capacity? Icon of the Seas shattered records, but can you name what she actually weighs? Or which ship was the first to break 100,000 GT back in 1999? The ship database has the answers.
CDC & Safety — The CDC has been inspecting cruise ships since 1971, evaluating 28 standardized items from water sanitation to food handling. Seven ships have scored a perfect 100. Six have scored below 90. Do you know which ones? Check the ship rankings to find out.
Hidden Costs — This is where cruise lines get sneaky. Auto-gratuities, drink package markups, WiFi that costs more than your cell phone plan. One cruise line charges up to $25 per person per day in gratuities alone. (Our tipping calculator can help you budget for that.)
Cruise Drama — From the Costa Concordia disaster to the “Poop Cruise” to a captain sentenced to 16 years in prison, the cruise industry has more drama than a Bravo marathon. These questions test whether you’ve been paying attention.
Ports & Destinations — PortMiami handles 7.6 million cruise passengers a year. But do you know which Caribbean island gets 5 million visitors, or which Alaskan port is the busiest? And yes, there’s a question about that Royal Caribbean private island that’s technically in Haiti.
Environmental — This one gets uncomfortable. We used Friends of the Earth data and PSIX safety records to build Green Scores for 60+ ships. The environmental category tests whether you know how the industry actually impacts the ocean it sails on.
Crew Life — Crew members work 6-9 month contracts, often with zero days off. One cruise line has a Glassdoor rating so low that only 36% of crew recommend working there. The ship profiles have the full crew treatment data.
Food & Dining — Large cruise ships prepare over 20,000 meals a day. CDC food safety scores range from 80 to 100, and we’ve graded every ship from “Spotless Galley” to “Code Red Kitchen.” This category tests your knowledge of what’s really happening behind the buffet line.
The Facts That Surprised Even Us
After building this trivia bank from real data, a few stats genuinely stopped us in our tracks:
- A single large cruise ship can emit as much fine particulate matter as roughly 1 million cars. That fun sunset cocktail on the Lido deck hits different when you know this.
- Cruise passengers consume an estimated 4,500 calories per day — more than double the recommended 2,000. A single buffet meal averages 1,200 calories. (Our weight gain calculator saw this coming.)
- Norwegian charges $20-25 per person per day in automatic gratuities — the highest in the industry. For two people on a 7-night cruise, that’s up to $350 in tips you didn’t budget for. Three cruise lines include gratuities in the fare price. Do you know which ones?
- Seven ships have earned a perfect 100 on their CDC inspection. Meanwhile, six ships scored below 90 — dangerously close to the failing threshold of 86.
These aren’t obscure gotcha facts. They’re things every cruiser should probably know before booking. And they’re all in the quiz.
Think You Can Beat the Clock?
The Cruise Trivia Showdown throws 15 timed questions at you from across all eight categories. You pick your difficulty — Easy gives you 25 seconds per question, Normal gives you 20, and Hard gives you just 15.
Answer quickly for a speed bonus. String together correct answers for a streak multiplier. And at the end, you get ranked on a scale from Landlubber (“Maybe stick to hotels”) all the way up to Admiral of the Fleet (“You know more about cruises than the crew. Honestly, it’s a little concerning”).
Most people land somewhere around Cabin Steward on their first try. The ones who’ve actually explored our ship database and rankings pages tend to do significantly better. Funny how that works.
Why Cruise Trivia Actually Matters
Look, this isn’t just bar trivia with a nautical theme. Every question in this game is built from real data — CDC inspection records, environmental reports, crew satisfaction surveys, and industry pricing. Knowing this stuff doesn’t just make you fun at dinner parties (though it definitely does). It makes you a genuinely smarter cruiser who can:
- Spot hidden costs before they hit your onboard account
- Choose ships with better food safety records
- Understand which cruise lines actually treat their crews well
- Make more informed decisions about where your vacation money goes
Our Ship Report Card and Tipping Calculator can help with the practical side. The trivia game is where you find out if you’ve been paying attention.
