The Tea

St. Thomas is a US territory, which means no passport needed, your cell phone works, and you can use American dollars — all huge selling points that the cruise lines love to advertise. What they're less eager to mention: the port area in Charlotte Amalie is a duty-free shopping zone that feels like it was designed exclusively to separate you from your money.

The island itself is beautiful, with Magens Bay consistently ranked among the world's best beaches. But the drive from the port is winding, steep, and terrifying if you're not used to driving on the left side of the road (yes, US territory, but British driving rules — don't ask).

Safety-wise, St. Thomas is generally fine in tourist areas but has higher crime rates than you'd expect for a US territory. Stick to the main shopping areas near the port and the well-traveled tourist zones. The value proposition is mixed — no foreign transaction fees, but prices aren't exactly mainland USA either.
