The Tea
St. Lucia is the port with the most dramatic scenery in the Caribbean — the twin Pitons rising from the sea are genuinely jaw-dropping and appear on approximately every travel magazine cover ever printed. The cruise port in Castries is functional but the area around it is underwhelming.
The real St. Lucia experience requires an excursion south to the Pitons, Soufriere, and the volcanic mud baths. It's a 45-60 minute drive on winding roads, so expect to spend $60-100 per person for a tour that covers the highlights. The ride itself is scenic but not for the queasy.
The tea: St. Lucia is a port where the excursion is mandatory — staying in Castries for the day would be a waste. The island is beautiful but spread out, and the cruise port is arguably the least interesting part of it. Book the Piton tour, the catamaran sailing, or both. And bring a waterproof camera.
