The Tea

San Diego might be the most pleasant cruise port in America, and it's not even close. The B Street Pier is literally downtown — as in, you walk off the ship and you're in the Gaslamp Quarter surrounded by restaurants, bars, and actual civilization. This is the port that other ports wish they were.

Parking at $20/day is mid-range, but the walkability means you might not even need a car. The airport is 10 minutes away ($12-18 Uber), and the weather is… well, it's San Diego. You already know. The only downside is that cruise options are limited — mainly seasonal repositioning cruises, Hawaii sailings, and the occasional Mexican Riviera run.

The tea: San Diego is proof that a cruise port can be in a great location without gouging passengers. If more cruise lines based ships here, it would give Miami and Fort Lauderdale a serious run for their money. The fact that they don't is one of cruising's great missed opportunities.
