At 4:00 a.m. on February 20, 2026, while most of the 271 passengers aboard the World Legacy were sleeping, a fire broke out in the lounge area on Deck 9.

By 4:30 a.m., a 23-year-old Indonesian laundry attendant was dead.

What Happened on the World Legacy

The World Legacy, operated by Resorts World Cruises, was sailing near Singapore when the blaze ignited in a Deck 9 lounge. Firefighting teams responded immediately and found the crew member collapsed in the lobby area. He was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. from cardiopulmonary arrest secondary to asphyxiation — meaning it was the smoke, not the flames, that killed him.

At least four passengers were hospitalized with injuries. The ship was carrying 271 guests and 388 crew members at the time.

The Evacuation

All 271 passengers were evacuated safely. The first wave — 190 people — were transferred by ferry to Singapore’s HarbourFront Ferry Terminal. The remaining passengers followed shortly after. Nobody was left behind, but “safely evacuated” doesn’t mean “calmly evacuated.” Passengers reported panic, confusion in smoke-filled corridors, and the terrifying experience of being woken at 4 a.m. to emergency alarms.

The World Legacy is now anchored at Raffles Reserved Anchorage while investigators determine what caused the fire. Resorts World Cruises has not released a definitive explanation.

Why This Matters

Fires on cruise ships are rare but not unheard of. What makes this one notable: a crew member died. That almost never makes headlines the same way passenger incidents do, but it’s a stark reminder that the people keeping you fed, entertained, and comfortable are working in conditions that can turn deadly.

The laundry attendant was 23 years old. He was working a night shift. And he died because smoke filled the corridors before anyone could reach him.
