Mainstream Cruise Lines: Daily Gratuity Rates
These cruise lines charge automatic daily gratuities that are added to your onboard account. You can technically remove them at Guest Services, but crew members depend on this income.
Carnival Cruise Line
Standard cabins: $16.00/person/day | Suites: $18.00/person/day
Auto-gratuities are charged daily. Bar drinks include 18% gratuity automatically. Spa services add 18%. Carnival’s rates are middle-of-the-pack for mainstream lines. On a 7-night cruise for two in a standard cabin, you’ll pay $224 in automatic gratuities.
Royal Caribbean
Standard cabins: $16.00/person/day | Suites: $18.50/person/day
Similar structure to Carnival. Auto-gratuities are non-negotiable unless you visit Guest Services. Bar and spa services add 18%. Royal Caribbean has been gradually increasing rates over the past few years.
Norwegian Cruise Line
All cabins: $20.00/person/day | Suites: $25.00/person/day
The highest daily gratuity rate among mainstream cruise lines. NCL has been aggressive about rate increases. Bar and spa add 20% (also the highest). A 7-night cruise for two costs $280 in auto-gratuities for standard cabins, $350 for suites.
MSC Cruises
All cabins: $16.00/person/day
MSC keeps the same rate regardless of cabin category. Bar and spa services add 15%, which is lower than most competitors. A solid value proposition for budget-conscious cruisers.
Celebrity Cruises
Standard cabins: $18.00/person/day | Suites: $23.00/person/day
Celebrity’s rates reflect its premium positioning. The suite rate gap is significant. Bar and spa services add 18%.
Princess Cruises
Standard cabins: $16.00/person/day | Suites: $18.00/person/day
In line with Carnival and Royal Caribbean. Bar services add 18%, spa adds 18%. Princess keeps things simple and competitive.
Holland America Line
Standard cabins: $16.00/person/day | Suites: $17.00/person/day
Small gap between standard and suite rates. Bar adds 15%, spa adds 18%. Holland America’s slightly lower bar gratuity percentage is a small savings on drink-heavy voyages.
Disney Cruise Line
All cabins: $14.50/person/day (suggested, not auto-charged)
Disney uses a suggested gratuity system rather than automatic charges, though envelopes are provided on the last night. Bar services add 18%. The lower daily rate reflects Disney’s different approach, though the social pressure to tip is equally strong.
Oceania Cruises
Standard cabins: $18.00/person/day | Suites: $23.00/person/day
Premium pricing to match Oceania’s upscale positioning. Bar and spa add 18%.
Cunard
Standard cabins: $14.50/person/day | Suites: $16.50/person/day
Among the lowest auto-gratuity rates. Bar adds 15%, spa adds 15%. Cunard’s British heritage shows in its more restrained tipping culture.
Luxury Lines: Gratuities Included
These cruise lines include all gratuities in the cruise fare. No daily charges, no envelopes, no awkward calculations. Extra tipping for exceptional service is optional.
Virgin Voyages
All gratuities included in fare. Bar drinks include 18% automatically. Virgin’s “no tips required” policy is part of its modern, millennial-focused brand.
Viking Ocean Cruises
All gratuities included. Bar services add 15%. Viking explicitly asks guests not to tip, though cash for exceptional service is accepted.
Regent Seven Seas
All gratuities included in the all-inclusive fare. Bar services add 18%. As one of the most expensive cruise lines, everything is truly included.
Silversea
All gratuities included. Bar services add 15%. Like Regent, Silversea’s ultra-luxury positioning means tips are built into the fare.
The Bottom Line
Norwegian is the most expensive for tipping. Cunard and Disney are the cheapest among mainstream lines. If tipping stress gives you anxiety, luxury lines with included gratuities eliminate the entire question. For everyone else, use our calculator to budget the exact amount before you sail.
