Imagine this: you’re on a cruise in the Mediterranean, sleeping peacefully at 3:00 a.m., when suddenly everything goes dark. The lights. The air conditioning. The toilets. Everything.

That’s exactly what happened aboard Celebrity Infinity on February 15, 2026.
A Small Fire, a Big Problem
Celebrity Infinity, a 90,940-gross-ton ship approaching Piraeus, Greece, experienced what Celebrity Cruises described as a “small onboard fire” that triggered a complete power failure. Small fire, massive consequences.
When a cruise ship loses power, it doesn’t just mean the lights go out. It means:
- No cabin lighting
- No air conditioning (in February, not the worst timing, but still)
- No working toilets or plumbing
- No Wi-Fi
- No ability to steer the ship
That last one is the important part. A 90,000-ton vessel drifting without propulsion off the Greek coast isn’t a minor inconvenience — it’s a maritime emergency.
Tugboats to the Rescue
Unable to maneuver under its own power, Celebrity Infinity had to be stabilized and guided into the Port of Piraeus by tugboats. The ship was essentially towed to safety.
Celebrity immediately canceled the next sailing — an 11-night “Best of Greece” voyage that was scheduled to depart February 16 — and issued full refunds to those passengers, including non-refundable deposits. The ship is cleared to resume service with its February 27 departure, giving the crew nearly two weeks to figure out what went wrong and fix it.
This Isn’t Celebrity’s First Rodeo
Celebrity Infinity is 24 years old. She entered service in 2001 and has been sailing the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Alaska for over two decades. Older ships aren’t inherently less safe, but they do require more maintenance — and when something goes wrong on a ship this age, the question of “how much longer can this ship keep sailing?” gets louder.
For context, the average cruise ship lifespan is about 30 years. Celebrity Infinity is in her mid-twenties. She’s not ancient, but she’s definitely not new.
