The Tea
Puerto Vallarta is the Mexican cruise port with actual character. The Malecon (boardwalk) is lined with sculptures and street performers, the old town is charming with cobblestone streets, and the food scene goes way beyond tourist-trap territory. PV has genuine culture that exists independent of cruise ships.
The port is walkable to the downtown and Malecon, which is a rarity for Mexican Pacific ports. The beach at Playa de los Muertos (Dead Man's Beach — don't worry, the name is historical) is lively and fun. Sierra Madre excursions, zip-lining, and whale watching add outdoor options.
The tea: Puerto Vallarta is the best Mexican Pacific cruise port, and it's not close. The city has the infrastructure of a resort town but the soul of a real Mexican city. The prices are reasonable, the food is excellent, and you can have a genuinely authentic experience without ever buying a shore excursion. Walk the Malecon, eat street tacos, and enjoy.
