The Tea
Barbados is the Caribbean island that feels most like a real country rather than a cruise port — because it is. The island has genuine infrastructure, a strong cultural identity, and a food scene that goes way beyond resort buffets. The cruise terminal in Bridgetown is walkable to the shopping district.
The beaches on the south and west coasts are world-class, but they require a taxi or bus ($2 local bus — highly recommended). Carlisle Bay near the port has decent snorkeling, including a sea turtle hotspot. The island's rum heritage is real — a Mount Gay distillery tour is worth the $15.
What the cruise lines don't emphasize: Barbados is an embarkation port for several Southern Caribbean itineraries, meaning you can fly in and start your cruise here instead of Miami. If you're ever considering it — do it. The island deserves more than a six-hour port call.
