The Tea

Labadee is Royal Caribbean's private resort on the northern coast of Haiti — and the cruise line goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure you never think about the fact that you're in Haiti. The compound is fenced, guarded, and completely separated from the surrounding community. It's a beautiful beach, no question, but the optics are… complicated.

The zip line over the water is one of the best private island activities in cruising, the beaches are well-maintained, and the barbecue lunch is included. It's a perfectly pleasant day — as long as you don't think too hard about the Level 4 travel advisory for the country you're technically visiting.

The tea: Labadee is the most morally complicated port in all of cruising. You're in one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, behind a fence, at an all-inclusive resort owned by a $50 billion cruise company. Make of that what you will.
